Just wondering what the general opinion is here on "core" bands. Basically, I mean metalcore. And not old metalcore like Killswitch Engage or All That Remains or Bullet For My Valentine, I want to know what your opinion is on bands like....well,
Attack Attack Asking Alexandria Capture the Crown iwrestledabearonce Bring Me The Horizon Of Mice & Men Miss May I The Word Alive Pierce the Veil We Came As Romans A Skylit Drive
stuff like that. I personally.....well.....I sort of detest it. But what do you think? |

iwrestledabearonce does have a very technical aspect to them which sets them apart from the other bands. I try to be fair and listen to music before I judge it but like, come on. I listened to attack attack for the first time yesterday and felt like i had been stricken with cancer. They sound so....generic. That chuggachuggachugga breakdown riff is in literally EVERY SONG. Asking Alexandria is the same, too. Pierce the Veil's singer is whiny. A skylit drive's singer sounds like a chick when he does cleans and his screams....well they're okay. I just don't understand how people like it. But hey if people like it it's their business - they don't understand how I can like cannibal corpse. Although I think Cannibal Corpse is more respectable than whiney suburban kids in skinny jeans with straightened hair. |

Metalcore is, for the most part, really bad. Hardcore and post-hardcore can be amazing if done correctly. I quite like a bit of mathcore and grindcore occasionally as well. |

Attack Attack is more generic than a band without a name. In all seriousness Metalcore is horrible (I feel the same way about the more metal-ish Post-Hardcore bands). Hardcore can be good. I equate Hardcore with Punk moreso than metal however. |

I like mathcore....well, I love the Dillinger Escape Plan. And I wouldn't call all metalcore horrible, some bands have surprised me. I'm a hardcore atheist so I was really surprised when I heard (and actually liked) August Burns Red and The Devil Wears Prada. And Texas in July. I also like Motionless In White. But thats as far as that really goes. I also like the older metalcore, Killswitch, All That Remains, BMFV, Shadows Fall, but they didn't whine as much as todays bands. (this might make you hate me) I do like deathcore, though. Not stuff like Emmure but like, almost-death metal type deathcore. I mean Whitechapel, The Red Chord, Suicide Silence, Salt the Wound, stuff like that. |

Okay, I have a soft spot for Killswitch, but that's nostalgia more than anything. I forgot about deathcore, but I dislike that immensely. |

I'm not too big of a Mathcore fan. In my opinion, it's just better to skip over and head to the mama genre of Math Rock which is incredibly sick.

I prefer Math Rock to Mathcore, but some Mathcore's pretty math. |

Yeah, I agree Mathcore is better than like 75% of the other metal branches, but pure Math Rock is the best way to get acquainted with sick guitar-playing. Plus you'll likely listen to Slint which is great. |

I always thought of Slint as more post-rocky personally, but yeah, they're great nonetheless. My favourites types of Math Rock are the Japanese scene and the sorta Midwestern Emo stuff, like American Football. |

I honestly dont even pay attention to the genre of bands I listen to or have heard of. I can't listen to a song and say "oh this is a metalcore band". So what exactly is the genre characterized by? I've heard a few songs from some of the bands you mentioned and there is usually screaming and I've found guitar to often be deep, powerful or notes and then fast fills. Drums are heavy too. But someone who actually listens to the genre should help me out. :p |

Well the genre generally compromises of riffs that are simple open chugging.....so an accurate mimicry of the guitar lines in most asking alexandria songs would be "chuggachuggachugga chugga chugchug chug chuggachugga." Vocals are usually screamed (usually a high scream, not a low growl) and sometimes feature...well, to put it bluntly, whiny, autotuned clean vocals. All tied together by breakdowns that are the same as the aforementioned chugging riff...just slower. iwrestledabearonce doesn't use this formula, their actually pretty technical and math-rock-y, but asking alexandria, capture the crown, miss may i and of mice and men follow this formula pretty strictly. So it eliminates alot of originality from the genre. |

If screaming + auto-tune it's either Metalcore or Post-Hardcore. |

What would make something post-hardcore rather than metalcore then? I listen to some bands that I've heard called post-hardcore bands, but I really dont know what makes them post-hardcore. Generally I dont worry about genres much, but I am curious what other people think. |

Post-Hardcore is basically a more melodic version of hardcore punk with broader influences, sometimes like electronica and folk or stuff... it's a surprisingly diverse genre. Unfortunately, shitty scene bands have polluted its name. Metalcore is hardcore punk with metal influences, pretty much. |

90s Post-hardcore was like that nowadays all post-hardcore is more or less scene-core. |

Bring Me The Horizon (the love them or hate them band) were the only metalcore band I could listen to. Well.. actually their 'Their Is A Hell...' album is the only metalcore album I can listen too. The rest of their stuff is gash and the rest of metalcore is gash. |
