Hey ladies and gents. Ghosts of Mississippi just hit the shelves yesterday and I couldn't be prouder about it. I think it's probably the most musically driven album I've ever put together and it was a lot of hard work. Make sure you get the deluxe edition that will follow in the next few weeks! We even recorded a long form music video for The Gunfighter starring myself and dear old Grandaddy as dueling gunfighters! It was a blast to film and the old fella seems like he's holding up quite well. He can still ride and handle a pistol like his hands were made to hold them. I won't being making the Carnival of Sounds sadly because the bill is already full. So I'm going to record my Grandfather's next album which may be his last, though I hope not. But let's not end this on a sour note. Here's the track listing for the entire album! Get it soon before somebody else does!

Johnny McDougal and Southland
Ghosts of Mississippi:

1. The Gunfighter
2. I'm Worried
3. Going Down South
4. Crossroads Blues
5. Electric Worry
6. Death Letter Blues
7. First Time I Met The Blues
8. Sweet Tea and Reefer
9. Rollin' and Tumblin'
10. Hear My Train A'Comin'

Deluxe Disc Included Contains:
A Making of The Album Video Feature
Acoustic Album Sessions w/ live footage from Ground Zero Blues Club
Gunfighter Music Video

Brandon Caulfield: This is old school rock, the way it was meant to be. It's great to hear music of this nature in this day and age, just stripped down to the core elements of rock and roll, brilliant stuff!

This is Johnny and I am almost kind of sad to report that this will be Grandfather's last musical release. But the doctor's have predicted in the next few months he'll be without his voice. So it was a race to get him recorded while his voice was still in peak condition. But you can hear it leaving a bit near the end of the album. Though I will attest that his voice suddenly was given more powerful soul as it grew a bit deeper from the condition that he is in. But I love the message in some of the songs he hand picked to do. I think he knows his time is coming. He also asked me to release this streaming to the public because he thought that it's message should be heard. It's actually being distributed at an agreeable price of 9 bucks. So get yourself a hold of it.

Album Title: Going Home
By: Jack McDougal

Track Listing:

1. When I Go Away

Liner Notes:Grandad knows he's going to die soon. I hope we get to keep him a little while longer. But he's facing it like a champion. If anything suggests his bravery toward death this song does. We got a few gospel singers to help sing the back up for this tune. There's going to be a hell of a party thrown when he finally lays down for good. But I'm going to miss him. So he knows he's going soon. But he doesn't want anybody to feel bad when he leaves us. From what he's told me he wants everybody to have a ball and party until we can't stand any more.

2. The Mountain

Liner Notes: A beautiful coal miner's ballad about the stripping and clearing of the land for progress. Now there's an only empty mine that's left. "There's a chill in the air that only miner's can feel. There's ghosts in the tunnels that the company sealed." That last line gives me chills up my spine when I hear it. The fiddle behind it really drives the song home. I feel like I'm out in the woods even though I'm stuck in the studio. It carries you outside into the mountains. It just has that feel.

3. Poor Old Dirt Farmer

Liner Notes:All the holler and beat of an old school country tune. Another pretty political tune about the hardships that local and self sufficient farmers have nowadays because of the economy taking its toll on him. Nice little message told rather simply. I like that very much. Sometimes it's damn easy to put out a message without being flashy about it. There was definitely no flair here. But that's what I think makes the song extra special.

4. Feelin' Good

Liner Notes: I have to admit this a damn good blues tune. I can't remember where we found the girl to sing the other parts of the tune but she was great to have in the studio and really gave the song that extra push that it needed. They're voices definitely complimented each other that's for sure. I like how this song came out. It had all the right ingredients to make a perfect song.

5. Got Me A Woman

Liner Notes: Believe it or not. This is a Waylon Jennings song. It was my idea to play slide guitar instead of just playing original acoustic rhythm. Then we threw in the piano and had Grandad pick on the mandolin. What resulted is my favorite song on the entire album. All the right instruments, the right song, and every thing just falls into place. This was a fun one for me to do and put together musically.

6. Tennessee Jed

Liner Notes: I decided to throw the entire album for a loop and throw in a Grateful Dead cover than we enjoyed jamming too just during backyard sessions. This song had everything and was completed with a horn section. It just felt like a completely organic and improvised arrangement. Though I knew where I wanted everything and how I wanted the instrumentation set up along with the vocals. It just exploded into a song that took on its own life with what I decided to coax into it. It had that real dixieland blues/swing type sound to it that was just perfect.

7. Wide River To Cross

Liner Notes: This is song is just beautiful and there's really not much more I can say about it. Soft and mellow with a steady pace. It's another song where the fiddle just does it for me. That ends up making the song perfect because it adds an extra accent to the vocals.

8. Calvary

Liner Notes: A nice deep and bluesy tune about the darkness of addiction until you eventually have to face your redemption or destruction from it. I like the allusion. Every man has their Calvary. That's very true.

9. Golden Bird

Liner Notes: There are no words for this. Grandad wanted to do this and said he only wanted a fiddle to back him up. The rest was just pure magic. It was beautiful and moving. It really set the tone for ending of the album and set up for the last track. After this song there was only silence in the studio. But a comfortable silence like something so beautiful had just happened that none of us could speak to witness what we were watching and hearing.

10. O Death

Liner Notes: We recorded this entire album at intervals when Grandad's voice was in great condition. This final recording has caught his voice starting to go. But it was deeper and seemed to do him more of a favor than a hindrance. There was nothing but utter silence in the studio as he stood behind the microphone and took command of the whole studio who just stood watching. There were no words to express the magnitude of the stirring and spine chilling feelings that washed over us. After that he took a bow in the studio and we just broke out in applause. I cried like a baby.

Driving Toward The Horizon Line

Currently packing up the gear and the clan of family along with Grandad who will accompany me on my 25 date schedule for what I have called The Highway Signs of Life tour just because it sounded good really and fits in a way I can't explain. He will sing on a few dates or until his voice gives out on him completely. This is his request and I intend to honor it completely. I've got the itch of course to hit the road. Getting those anxious jitters every time I walk out on the pavement. Itchy feet as Grandad calls them. Those old timey sayings get to me sometimes and I'm cherishing each moment more that I get with him. The bus is now almost packed to capacity though I think I'm going to take the harley behind it for a few gigs. Something about seeing Hess in that caddie made me miss the feeling of being behind a wheel or a set of handlebars in this case. I've picked mostly concert halls, pubs, and cafe's once more because I just enjoy the intimacy of it all along with the general feeling an acoustic show can bring in those types of places. Sadly I regret that I won't be able to bring Erich and his crew along with me. Though I also enjoy the company of his female friend as well. So I hope anyone who wants to join me at this point will do so. I'll accept whoever wants to tag along and we'll make a damn good go of it. I can smell burgers and italian sausages cooking on the grill out back. The sound of some guitar is starting to blend with the smell so I believe that's my cue to go for now. I'll catch up with you later further on down the road.

There's nothing like a good motorcycle ride to feel the wind in your hair. It's a hell of a way to see the country as well. So I think the majority of the tour will be seen on the back of my Harley. I almost regret getting off of it when I got to Wheeling this afternoon. But playing the Capitol is an enjoyable experience because there's so much history here. Many country greats played here Johnny Cash, George Jones, and Loretta Lynn to name a few. I also saw B.B. King here many years ago from the third row. I can't wait to get out of the green room and lay down some songs for the crowd which I'm told is sold out. Honestly I never thought I'd sell out a music hall for some reason. Stranger things have happened they say. So this is going to be a good show tonight. I've already got the set list prepared but I still can say I'm a bit nervous. It's something about playing in a historic theater that gives me the jitters. You strive to play better and make your performance more memorable. One of the guys in the back is telling me I got 5 minutes until stage time. So I better wrap this up. I'll see you further on down the road.

Set List:

Hang Loose (Alabama Shakes Cover)
Podunk Stomp
Blood In Your Eyes
It's Not Dark Yet (Dylan Cover)
Let's Go Fishin' (New Song/Wrote It In The Green Room)
All The Glitters
Maria
I Used To Love Her
Devils and Dust (Springsteen Cover)
Setting The Woods On Fire (Hank Williams Cover w/Jack McDougal)
The Gunfighter
Death Letter Blues
I'm Worried
My Old Man
A Train Song
Under The Table
A Train Robbery W/Jack McDougal

Encore:
Coal Miner's Hands
Orange Blossom Special
Country Roads (John Denver Cover W/Jack McDougal)

I've rolled through Pennsylvania rather quietly than I usually do. Being that I have an affinity for the city and the people in Pittsburgh I usually tear it up there. So it was no exception that I left the Altar Bar in a whirl wind of beer and sound before heading to Harrisburg to get a bit torn up. I should've known better than too play at a brewery but some times the lessons you think you've learned are the easiest one's to repeat. So I lead a few drunken sing-a-longs and managed to get through the set at Appalachian Brewing Company with some bluster. Didn't get sick or pass out either so I guess I did alright. Finally writing this entry late after finishing a great set at the Clay Center in Charleston. Normally my set list is subject to change on a nightly basis but I kept it relatively the same for my trek through Pennsylvania, with a brief stopover in Cleve-land where I made sure to make my pilgrimage to the Rock Hall once again, and now I find myself blazing through my home state again. The encore and some songs in the middle had changed some but most of the set list I have been playing currently is still intact though it will probably change once I get further south.

I was once again taken by performing with my Grandad who still is just as soulful and commanding of a crowd when he is not at full health. His tenacity and desire to perform amazes me even more every day. I don't know how he does it when he knows his health is failing him and he will soon be without voice. It's teaching me to be humble and appreciate these moments I have with him. I just hope he will still have some pipes to sing with at the Ryman which I will consider his final send off performance. If he's up for it I may not even perform that night and just let him have the stage to himself. The set will probably be a small one because it is getting more difficult to put on long sets. But I know it will be memorable.

The towns flash by so fast some times but the night has been warm and has had a lot of soul in it this evening. Something about playing the meaningful places that make the music really resonate. Pulling the Harley over here at the next rest stop to park it in the travel trailer. Then head off to bed for a good night's rest. Looking forward to some beach time when we hit Virginia.

Set List

Layla (Clapton Cover)
Friend of The Devil/Brokedown Palace (Dead Cover)
Crazy (Gnarls Barkley Cover)
Ink, Blood, and Whiskey
Podunk Stomp
The Gunfighter
A Train Robbery w/ Jack McDougal
The Mountain w/ Jack McDougal
Blood In Your Eyes
Setting The Woods On Fire (Hank Sr. Cover w/ Jack McDougal)
All That Glitters
Mistaken Ballad
My Old Man
I Know A Girl
The War (New Song)
Under The Table

Encore:
Tennessee Jed w/ Jack McDougal
Kingfish w/ Jack McDougal
Country Roads (John Denver Cover)

Campfire Tunes

The video was adjusted a bit to bring the three men into view that were sitting in beach chairs around a camp fire. A large case of beer in the middle with a pyramid of cans stacked up next to it. Johnny was sitting in the middle of course. Shirtless to show off his tattoos and wearing a cowboy hat. His acoustic guitar sat leaning on his chair as his grandad sat to his right relaxing. His guitar was also leaning against his chair with his mandolin laying across his lap. Their drummer of course who was Johnny's uncle had a pair of bongos in his lip with a cigarette lingering in his lips. He and Jack had on matching Hawaiian shirts. They all weren't wearing shoes as the fire crackled and cast a glow around their faces. You could hear the distant sound of waves gently rolling on to the shore behind them. The night was kind of starry with a bit of moonlight that added more light and a bit of mood to the entire scene. Johnny grinned at the camera and toked on a joint as he sipped his beer.

Johnny: We rolled into Virginia Beach late tonight and we play tomorrow. Decided to spend a quiet evening on the beach to spend what time we did have chilling out just a little bit. Been hanging out by the beach most of the evening and having a campfire with some beer, hot dogs, and a little smoke. It's been a fine night. I got here my Grandad and Uncle to jam a little. Gonna play give some of you that haven't made it to the show yet a taste of what you'd been missing. While I'm at it I wanna give a shout out to some friends. Mr. Hess and his crew I gotta say I miss your company out here on the road. Brandon Caulfield, sir I'd like you to join me if you could on this little tour I'm on. The door's still open for the invite. Don't care if you show up later or at the end. It'd be a pleasure. The same goes for Miss Ellie-Grace Summers who I hope to catch in Tennessee. Also Lily Abbot who I hope to see sooner than later.

Jack: This beach air is doing good for my health or maybe it's just the beer. But I hope to make the most of what will to be my final tour in my eyes. Though the doctor said I shouldn't be doing this I told him to go straight to hell. I'm going out with my boots on. You can't ever keep a good man down as they say. I've had to start puffing on a fancy vaporizer because the smoke isn't good for my lungs. Seeing as I got cancer though I'm prescribed this stuff! Best thing that ever happened to me, this cancer thing. I gotta say I do miss Mr. Hess as well. Swapping road stories and jokes with him was more fun than I'd had in years. You're a class act kid. You got my stamp of approval and I'm glad you're taking your country act on the road to really bring traditional outlaw music to the masses. You can hang your hat on that any day. I hope to see you and your clan soon.

Johnny: We're gonna quit talking here for the moment and play a tune for you. Have a little fun. One, two, three, four.

Johnny grabbed his guitar along with his grandad while his Uncle Jonah began to thump out a little rousing beat on his bongo drums. After taking another toke on his joint Johnny tossed it into the fire. Then grinned at the camera.

Johnny: This is a nice little ballad song about some animals. Sorta. It's gotta nice little beach campfire ballad type feel. That's filled with mystery and intrigue. Mr. Wolf and Mamabear....

He smirked and started to play as somebody approached him from behind and strapped his harmonica holder around his neck. His hands flashed a thumbs up before he disappeared off camera again. Then he peeked his head into the camera. It was Joe who most people should by know as the second axe man and co-founder of TMK. Moving into the camera he was wearing a grass skirt and a flowered boa around his neck then started dancing. This drove chuckles from the rest of the guys.

Johnny: And Joe Monroe, our hula dancer. Nice skirt man.

He composed himself started to sing while Joe danced around the campfire. They played their guitars in time together while Jack kept rhythm and Johnny kept a continuous lead playing over the top of it. Then he occasionally put in some harmonica fills it was a rousing little acoustic ballad. They looked as they were having a lot of fun as they exchanged licks on occasion playing the song out into a nice little ballad until the song finished rather quietly.

Mr. Wolf and Mama Bear were banging on the door
I told 'em once, I told 'em twice, don't come 'round here no more
They've stolen all our chickens, they killed our neighbor's cat
Last night I saw 'em talking to big weasel and his rat
It's such a cozy neighborhood, we love our little town
Lately things ain't been so good, there's something goin' down

It happened just a year ago; someone hired a band
They had a dog and pony show that got clean out of hand
There was fur and feathers flyin', the son of the old goat
Said Coon-boy pulled a shotgun from his worn out overcoat
Bobcat killed Miss Peacock; Coon-boy shot the Mare
While Mr. Wolf smoked opium and grinned at Mama Bear

Two dead ducks lay there beside Miss Peacock on the floor
The fat goose grabbed the telephone and called the Dogs of War
The guineas begged for mercy, the pigs began to squeal (Jack squeals like a pig at this point)
Coon-boy took the kitty, jumped in his automobile
Bobcat and the wheelman, the famous Wolverine
Shot out the light and in the night they faded from the scene

Chief Detective Rambouillet did not work for free
And Sheriff Hog was called away unexpectedly
The sheriff's re-election, the murder of the Mare
Might get Hog implicated with the Wolf and Mama Bear
So Rambouillet took up the case then shut it down for good
He bought a house in southern France but lives in Hollywood

The bodies of the bobcat and the famous Wolverine
Were found inside a motel room outside of San Joaquin
The city council voted the insurance board to pay
The victims of that heinous crime upon that dreadful day
And I watch from the shadows where beneath a frosty moon
Mr. Wolf and Mama Bear feed on a dead raccoon

You could hear the waves quietly rolling at the end. When he stopped and then looked at the camera again. While digging his toes into the sand he began to talk once more.

Johnny: One we hit Myrtle Beach and then head too Florida we'll crank out another two tunes for you fine people. While we sit and jaw around the campfire or whatever. Right now there isn't too much to say but hello. I think once I get home I may turn this into a weekly little web show. Anyway we're gonna sign off for tonight and get some sleep. Hope to see you guys out there tomorrow.

Campfire Tunes Part Two

Recorded 8/11/2016

It's another beautiful day as the sun can be seen setting into the ocean creating a beautiful mix of colors that glitter over the waves that roll into the shore. This time it's only Johnny and Jack seated in their beach chairs with their guitars laying across their laps. Jack has a traditional acoustic guitar that looks like it has seen every part of the country. Johnny's is a fancy resonator with silver plates inset on the body. He's wearing a WVU baseball cap and a Johnny Cash tee shirt over a pair of what looks wet swimming trunks. Jack is wearing a white cowboy hat with a plain work shirt along with faded jeans. They are tending to a fire as Jack strums his guitar a little. There's a large gallon jug of home made whiskey sitting between them which has obviously been drank from a bit.

Jack: Howdy everybody! My memory hasn't gone to hell yet so I know we're here in beautiful Myrtle Beach. So I'm currently sitting on my butt enjoying this nice weather. Got my bastard grandson here next to me to share a drink with and to play another tune to put out over those fancy computer boxes you people have. Anyway days like these put a smile on my face. I may be staring death in the face but I'm going out with a grin and make sure my boots are on tight. I'm kicking the grim reaper in the teeth and dancing through the pearly gates to smoke with Jesus.

Johnny: You better. I don't want you going out without some kind of bang. You tough old son of a bitch you.

Jack: I've considered having my body shot from a cannon and into the New River Gorge. From the bridge. I want my ashes and bone to rain down on people from above. Get in people's drinks if at all possible. Give everybody a damn good taste of me before I go out properly.

Johnny: Whatever way you choose will probably kick ass. We could make you a firework and blast your ashes off that way. The way Hunter Thompson did it.

Jack: Being a human cannon ball still sounds fun. Not too lively seeing as I'll probably be dead. But I wanna blow up when I go skyward.

After chuckling and slapping their knees a little. Johnny grabbed the jug, took a sip, and passed it over to his grandad who did the same. For a brief moment everything turned solemn as Johnny looked off into the sunset for a moment and coughed possibly hiding some tears a little bit. Then he turned back to the camera.

Johnny: I love you gramps. I'll miss you.

Jack: I know.... I'll still be around though. Don't worry.

The old man smiled and reached over to pat Johnny on the shoulder then flicked him behind the ear with a sly grin. Then he decided to start strumming his guitar a bit. It had a country blues sound to it as he finger picked it out in a style. His head swayed from side to side as he started to sing. Johnny slapped out the drum beat on the body of his guitar before joining in.

I ain't got the blues any more.
I don't toss and turn at night.
Mama I don't walk the floor.
Cause ever since little mama
came home I found what I'm
looking for.

I'm gonna shine a big sparklin'
shine. Everybody that I meet
is gonna be a good friend of
mine. I'm feeling fine, Just fine
as wine. I can't frown for grinnin'.
I can't lose for winnin'. I ain't
got the blues any more.

Sunday ain't no rain on my parade.
Ends are met lately and brother all
my bills got paid. Ever since little
mama came home. I'm made right in the
shade.

I'm gonna shine a big sparklin'
shine. Everybody that I meet
is gonna be a good friend of
mine. I'm feeling fine, Just fine
as wine. I can't frown for grinnin'.
I can't lose for winnin'. I ain't
got the blues any more.

Play it son......

Johnny slapped his slide across the neck of his guitar and put together a nice little solo. Tapping his foot as a few people could be seen watching in the background as just plain onlookers. When he finished he grinned and took over the singing duties while swaying his head back and forth in time with grandad. When he gets to the chorus of the song they sing together in harmony.

If I ain't got ten brother I got nine.
Good Lord's smiling down on me ain't
a worry on my mind. Something about my
fine little mama that makes me wanna....

Shine a big sparklin'
shine. Everybody that I meet
is gonna be a good friend of
mine. I'm feeling fine, Just fine
as wine. I can't frown for grinnin'.
I can't lose for winnin'. I ain't
got the blues any more.

No I ain't got the blues any more.

They finished together with the people behind them actually clapping. So they turned around and waved before looking back at the camera. Johnny took off his ballcap and rubbed his forehead a little bit. Then leaned over to hug Jack for a minute. After he set his guitar down he started to speak again.

Johnny: That sure was fun! Now that it's done I got some news for you people out there. Seems like Brandon Caulfield is going to come and join us at our big show at the Ryman in Nashville! Am I excited about this? You damn sure bet I am! We're playing four dates in Tennessee and we expect to see your smiling faces! I'd actually like to have Miss Summers along as well and have a nice big surprise show for that all you people can remember! One Night Only!

Jack: As usual we always love to play at the Ryman and I love playing there. We'll see all you fine people down the road. Take care of yourselves until then!

The Ryman show was a memorable one and always a pleasure. We tore down the house as usual with my Grandad still graciously playing several of his favorites along with a few of his older tunes. How he does it with his failing health is still an amazement to me. Despite everything the world gives him he still kicks it in the ass. Which is why I regretfully post this blog. It seems that the cowboy angels came for him this evening to take him up to the big starry prairie in the sky. He went out with his boots on just as he said he would. It'll be tough soldiering on for the last few dates of this tour. But I will carry out the rest of it strong. Because he wouldn't want me to up and quit on his behalf. You look life in the eye and kick it in the teeth. I'll see everyone further on down the road. I thank all of you for the kinds words and things you've already been sending. When this is tour is over I'll have further plans for a big memorial show at home. So we can send him off proper.

Jack McDougal Memorial Show and Funeral

UserPostedImage

My heart still hurts even though I was faced with the inevitable fact that he was going to go soon. But I'm dealing with it. I'll be playing a big memorial show to which my friends Brandon Caulfield and the Hess clan are cordially invited. I plan to play a few of his favorite songs and some that he's written that won't see the light of day otherwise. It'll be a big wake and party type thing with a mix of grief along with happieness. This is how he wanted to go with people celebrating and playing music. At the end of it all we pack his ashes into a firework and blast him into the air for a big display. I've kept some of his ashes though to keep for myself and to give to Erich for sentimental purposes you know. Not up for making music for a few days though we are preparing to TA and I couldn't be more excited about it.
