Title: This Doesn’t Feel Like Home Anymore
Genres: Alternative Rock, Pop-Rock
Length: 3:26
Label: North Hill Records!
Written: June 2012
Writer(s): Amy Meyer

Background & Song Description

‘This Doesn’t Feel Like Home Anymore’ is a song by the American teenage rock band, Riot! In The Boulevard. It was written in June 2012 by Amy Meyer shortly after returning home from touring with the band in the summer of 2012, along with ‘The Webs That You Weave’ it’s the earliest written material from their third studio album, with a lyrical theme that would appear to inform the listener of the lifestyle of a touring musician and perhaps seen as the most auto-biographical song written from the bands flame-haired frontwoman. It’s also the shortest track from the album at just 3:26 and bares a slight resemblance to a previous song from the album ‘A Place Called Home (The Leaving Song)’.

When discussing the song, Amy had this to say, “It’s a rather straightforward track that addresses my own feelings of being home, or at least my feelings when I was living back home in Vegas. As a band we tour a whole lot, to the point where there was a moment when I hadn’t been inside my home for over seven months which is kinda crazy. But after the tour finished in the summer, I went back home and I spent one evening there, it felt epically lonely to me, I couldn’t have felt more uncomfortable and the next day I left. But that evening I didn’t fall asleep, I couldn’t. I sat on my bedroom floor with an acoustic guitar and began writing the song, it was written within three hours and I’ve never been back since, I guess this song is my lasting memory of that place that I used to call home.”

A soft drum beat from Nathan signals the introduction to the song and is quickly followed by the guitar sound from Adam Benjamin providing the rhythmic tones along with a strong bass line from Jason Greenberg as it sets a quiet and relatively tender atmosphere for the song and continues throughout as Amy sings the opening lines in a soft vocal, “Six months gone and I’m back in town/I’m seen in a different light these days now/I’m not just the girl with the head full of fantasies/I’m the weary traveler that’s living out her wildest dreams/But I can see when they stare that it’s just not the same/I followed my dreams day by day/I once had a heart but I threw it away/Yeah, I once had a heart but I threw it away.”

Another verse follows and a soft lead guitar riff from Justin Mullen comes into play as the pre-chorus arrives in the song, Amy’s vocal delivery coming a little more powerful and assertive as she sings, “Oh someone save me, please just save me/Make everything right/Help me sleep at night/Oh someone save me, please just save me/From the haunting/Regret/Loss/Neglect.” which then increases in volume a little further as the songs chorus arrives for the first time, “This doesn’t feel like home anymore/There’s a space where you used to sleep/This doesn’t feel like home anymore/There’s photo’s scattered on the floor that I keep/This doesn’t feel like home anymore/I’m trapped in the chaos of my emptiness/This doesn’t feel like home anymore/Caused by me, it’s all my own mess.” the pre-chorus then arrives once again and the song fades out.

Lyrics

“Six months gone and I’m back in town
I’m seen in a different light these days now
I’m not just the girl with the head full of fantasies
I’m the weary traveler that’s living out her wildest dreams
But I can see when they stare that it’s just not the same
I followed my dreams day by day
I once had a heart but I threw it away
Yeah I once had a heart but I threw it away

But now I’m back around in the place that I’ve known
It’s empty as ever, it’s dark and it’s cold
A nightlight can’t save me when I close my eyes
A nightmare will wake me to recapture my haunted lies
I can pull up the covers but it’s no use
I can lock the doors to hide from the truth
I can keep the lights on to keep the demons at bay
I wish I never threw my heart away

Oh someone save me, please just save me
Make everything right
Help me sleep at night
Oh someone save me, please just save me
From the haunting
Regret
Loss
Neglect

This doesn’t feel like home anymore
There’s a space where you used to sleep
This doesn’t feel like home anymore
There’s photo’s scattered on the floor that I keep
This doesn’t feel like home anymore
I’m trapped in the chaos of my emptiness
This doesn’t feel like home anymore
Caused by me, it’s all my own mess

Oh someone save me, please just save me
Make everything right
Help me sleep at night
Oh someone save me, please just save me
From the haunting
Regret
Loss
Neglect”

Title: How Did We Get Here?
Genres: Alternative Rock, Pop-Punk
Length: 5:02
Label: North Hill Records!
Written: September 2012
Writer(s): Amy Meyer

Background & Song Description

‘How Did We Get Here?’ is a song by the American teenage rock band, Riot! In The Boulevard. This track was written by Amy Meyer in late September 2012 during the recording sessions for the bands third studio album, it’s a song linked to celebrity culture and the things that people will do in order to stay in the spotlight for as long as possible. It’s lyrics are relatively light-hearted but they are seen as a scathing indictment of the industry that each member of the band find themselves associated with, while the music is loud and aggressive which gives the song a pop-punk feel to it.

The track was written during a short break from recording and Amy described how the song came about in the build-up to the album’s release, “We pretty much had the bulk of songs that were going to appear on the album, I think we had nine songs that were nailed down on the Tracklisting but we were looking for a couple more songs to add, we had five or six other songs to choose from and as we took a two hour break from recording we sort of decided that we’ll choose from those six songs which other ones would appear on the album. But during that break we were out back and the guys were playing Basketball, I was sat on the ground reading a one of those trashy magazines that I had found in the lounge area and I was reading through at the various celebrity stories and there was one particular story and I thought to myself, ‘There she goes, little miss drama. I’ll bet she’s got an album coming out soon’ and I pretty much ran back inside to write what eventually became this track. It was entirely unexpected but it’s just one of those things that happen.

I find the celebrity culture to be a difficult thing, if we could just remove the people that are in the industry for the wrong reasons and be left with those that are making a valuable contribution to the future landscape of the entertainment industry then it would be a perfect world, sadly though it ain’t a perfect world and the only thing you can really do is feel sorry for them, because although they’ll think that the millions that they’re earning gives them a sense of accomplishment when all of that money dries up and they look back on what they’ve done then they’ll feel hollow and empty. But yeah, I wrote a song about these types of people.”

A powerful opening lead guitar riff if surrounded by the thunderous drum beats as Amy bellows out over the sounds of the instruments, “There she goes/They call her little miss drama/On the outside she’s a beautiful spirit/On the inside she’s got a soul darker than night/Her album drops on Monday/I guess it’s time for her to start a fight.” the leading guitar riff continues as does Amy’s vocal, “The press haven’t talked about her in a while/She’s starting to think that she’s going out of style/She’ll change her sound from country to techno/Say something slightly negative/And she’ll never ever let go.” as the leading riff drives the song forward it’s now combined by the rhythm guitar and bass guitar from Adam and Jason as well as the repetitive pounding of the drums from Nathan which remains centred around Amy’s loud and aggressive vocal delivery, “There she goes again tonight/Playing the victim but it’s all alright/Because she’ll send a story to Rolling Stone/About how all of her friends have left her alone/She claims that all she wants is respect/But give her the slightest piece of criticism/And the noose is around her neck.”

The song reaches its breakdown point as the guitars soften slightly with the bass becoming more prominent at this stage of the song as Amy continues to sing, “She’s friendly right now/But it won’t last/She says all of her troubles/Are in the past/As she confides in you/Talkin’ about her greatest fear/I just sit and wonder/How did we get here?” the instrumentation then powers up once again, “You used to be the next music hero/As soon as fame hits you/It looks like you’ve turned to zero/Your songs of love couldn’t have been more pure/But the media has infected you/And there’s just no cure.” the music continues to drive forward as the chorus and pre-chorus arrive once more before the thunderous beat of the drum ends the song.

Lyrics

“There she goes
They call her little miss drama
On the outside she’s a beautiful spirit
On the inside she’s got a soul darker than night
Her album drops on Monday
I guess it’s time for her to start a fight

The press haven’t talked about her in a while
She’s starting to think that she’s going out of style
She’ll change her sound from country to techno
Say something slightly negative
And she’ll never ever let go

There she goes again tonight
Playing the victim but it’s all alright
Because she’ll send a story to Rolling Stone
About how all of her friends have left her alone
She claims that all she wants is respect
But give her the slightest piece of criticism
And the noose is around her neck

She’s friendly right now
But it won’t last
She says all of her troubles
Are in the past
As she confides in you
Talkin’ about her greatest fear
I just sit and wonder
How did we get here?

You used to be the next music hero
As soon as fame hits you
It looks like you’ve turned to zero
Your songs of love couldn’t have been more pure
But the media has infected you
And there’s just no cure

And there she goes again tonight
Just playing the victim but it’s all alright
Because she’ll send a story out to Rolling Stone
About how her friends have left her alone
She says it gets tough and that nobody will care
With a tweet tweet here and a tweet tweet there
But she changes her tune
Pretty darn quick
She knows how to work the industry
She knows every little trick

She’s friendly right now
But it won’t last
She says all of her troubles
Are in the past
As she confides in you
Talkin’ about her greatest fear
I sit and wonder
How did we get here?”

Title: The Fire That Took My Love (Last Day Of Our Acquaintance)
Genres: Alternative Rock, Rock
Length: 7:42
Label: North Hill Records!
Written: October 2012
Writer(s): Adam Benjamin

Background & Song Description

‘The Fire That Took My Love (Last Day Of Our Acquaintance)’ is a song by the American teenage rock band, Riot! In The Boulevard. It was written by rhythm guitarist Adam Benjamin in October 2012 along with another song from the album ‘The Ruins You Created And The Hearts That You Took’, this song in particular shows a different lyrical pattern to previous songs from the band, perhaps more reminiscent of former songs, ‘Trying, Crying, Smiling And Dying’ and ‘The Rules Of Love And The Games You Play’ in that they rely slightly more on a storytelling style of approach something that was encouraged from his band mates, in particular Amy Meyer who tempted Adam to try to write a couple of songs on his own for inclusion in the album, that decision led to two songs from the album being solely written by Adam Benjamin.

He discussed the process of writing the song, “I tend to not be able to condense my songwriting into a three or four minute track, it drags on because I find that I can say things better with more words. I like the songs that I write to either have a big cinematic scope or a humorous element to it. Obviously songs that I write for the band are gonna be of a certain style, I’m not gonna put forward songs like ‘Okay, I Lied … The Truth Is That I Did Steal Your Copy Of The Gremlins’, ‘Boo! It’s Me’, ‘Oh My God, You Love The Notebook Too?’ and ‘You Idiot! … The Spoons Don’t Go In That Drawer’. Those sorts of songs are the ones that I usually don’t show to other people, they’re all pretty cool songs but they don’t really fit what we’re trying to do here with Riot!, you know? So when I’m writing songs specifically for the band then they’re done in a different style compared to the songs that I write at home when I’m bored.”

The song opens with the dark sounding tones of the piano playing from frontwoman Amy Meyer, it’s the only instrument that can be heard for the first twenty seconds before Amy finally begins to sing the scene setting opening lyrics to the song, “Peering out of the window/Staring obsessively into the far off distance/Of a beautiful love once shared between both you and I/I’m just walking through the deepest and darkest shadows of night/My chest in pain as I take in the cold winter air/You used to make it seem so easy/But you’re no longer there.” as she finishes singing the opening verse of the song, the tones of the piano are joined one by one, firstly with the soft but echo-ridden drumming, then the steady bass riff and rhythmic guitar playing and finally the droning buzz of the lead guitar being plugged into the amplifier, Justin then strikes the strings in a downward fashion to create an aggressive and powerful sound as Amy continues to sing, “I’m waging a war/Between myself and my heart/which one will be the first to break/I wonder which one will be the first to start/And here I am, remembering that beautiful laugh/And here I am, my eyes fixated on nothing/But yet your face is the only thing that I can see/The dimples in your cheeks/The curse of your pretty mouth/The most beautiful deep blue eyes/The ones that I can’t live without.”

As Amy finishes singing the second verse and the following verse in quick succession, the guitars come crashing to the forefront of the song for an extended instrumental break that lasts over half a minute before the piano tones can be heard once more as Amy forces her way back into the epicentre of the song, this time her vocals are even more powerful and assertive than before “And I don’t know your name anymore/I can’t recall your face/I can’t even picture you beside me/Instead there’s just this hollow empty space/I know I should be proud of you/But instead I’m filled with an anger that just won’t go/I’m longing for you ever more.” another brief musical breakdown where the drums and rhythm guitar are given space to shine for close to thirty seconds before the bass and lead guitars come crashing in over the landscape of the song as Amy bellows out in dramatic fashion with the use of an eerie echo, “These days, my body is empty/It’s a hollow shell/And I find myself living my very own hell/What is life when there’s no-one/How can I move forward/Now that you’re gone/I can’t ever get over you/And it’s not something that I’d choose to do/I think about putting an end to the misery/I just need something to set me free/But as I stare at the darkness/You’re staring back at me.”

Another verse follows in a similar fashion but as the final verse arrives the music is all but gone with the exception of the soft drumming heard in the background and the haunting tones of the piano as Amy sings softly, “The fire rushed and so did you/The flames burnt you alive but they burnt me too/And as I wish upon a star above/The fire took away my love/It also took away my innocence/On the last day of our acquaintance.” and as Amy sings those final words, you can hear her fingers press down on three separate piano keys which gives the relentless song it’s solemn and final end.

Lyrics

“Peering out of the window
Staring obsessively into the far off distance
Of a beautiful love once shared between both you and I
I’m just walking through the deepest and darkest shadows of night
My chest in pain as I take in the cold winter air
You used to make it seem so easy
But you’re no longer there

I’m waging a war
Between myself and my heart
Which one will be the first to break
I wonder which one will be the first to start
And here I am, just staring endlessly at your photograph
And here I am, remembering that beautiful laugh
And here I am, my eyes fixated on nothing
But yet your face is the only thing that I can see
The dimples in your cheeks
The curve of your pretty mouth
The most beautiful deep blue eyes
The ones that I can’t live without

Here I am, my eyes fixated on nothing
Yet your face is the only thing that I can see
The eyes that no nothing of malice, jealousy and anger
They’re right here and they’re fixated on me
But it’s just an illusion
Playing with my fragile mind
I know I can’t reach out and touch you
If only I could
Then darling, I would

But you left me
When you went into the fire
I begged you not to leave our home
But you said that duty calls
And now I’m just here all alone
With just those memories
That dissipate more and more each day
I long for a moment when I can reach out and touch you
But these things won’t ever come true

And I don’t know your name anymore
I can’t recall your face
I can’t even picture you beside me
Instead there’s just this hollow empty space
I know I should be proud of you
But instead I’m filled with an anger that just won’t go
I’m longing for you ever more

I remember the day that you went away
I remember it like it was yesterday
I saw on the news the woodlands up in flames
And then I heard the phone ring and nothing was ever the same
I could see those red lights flashing
I could hear the waves crashing
They were pounding endlessly on the shore
Just knowing that we couldn’t be together anymore

These days, my body is empty
It’s a hollow shell
And I find myself living my very own hell
What is life when there’s no-one
How can I move forward
Now that you’re gone
I can’t ever get over you
And it’s not something that I’d choose to do
I think about putting an end to the misery
I just need something to set me free
But as I stare at the darkness
You’re staring back at me

You left me
When you went into the fire
I begged you not to leave our home
And now I’m here all alone
With vague memories that dissipate more and more each day
I long for a moment when I can reach out and touch you
But these things won’t come true

The fire rushed and so did you
The flames burnt you alive but they burnt me too
And as I wish upon a star above
The fire took away my love
It also took away my innocence
On the last day of our acquaintance”

Adam: Wow, thank you very much Nichole, that's very kind of you and I'm very pleased that you enjoy a song that I wrote more than a song that Amy wrote, I'm counting that as a very rare win for this rhythm guitarist! :)

Title: Spotlight (feat. Isaac Lovelock)
Genres: Alternative Rock
Length: 4:18
Label: North Hill Records!
Written: October 2012
Writer(s): Amy Meyer, Isaac Lovelock

Background & Song Description

‘Spotlight (feat. Isaac Lovelock)’ is a song by the American teenage rock band, Riot! In The Boulevard. It was written towards the end of October 2012 primarily by Amy Meyer as a late inclusion for the album and features guest vocals from co-producer of the album ‘Isaac Lovelock’ to show a slightly different element to the Riot! In The Boulevard song cannon. It’s lyrics taking on an added emotional resonance as in a recent discussion about the track, lead singer Amy Meyer stated that it’s very much an auto-biographical song about her father who passed away before the band really begun to take off, she stated that every evening it pains her to know that he hasn’t been able to see what she’s managed to achieve from first hand, “He would have absolutely been the first person to see our shows, when we first formed the band and were spending a lot of time performing in and around these tiny little places in Vegas he was the one person that was most supportive, he’d drive us literally anywhere for a show and so for us to really break out just as he died was a saddening thing to deal with, we knew it was coming but it was still rough.”

She continued to talk in length about her father’s influence, “He got me into the music that inspired me to want to become a musician. He had an incredible collection of music, in particular The Cure and The Replacements. It’s not exactly music that an eleven year old girl would naturally associate with but I did, my daddy liked it, our song was ‘Here Comes A Regular’, it made him tear up almost every time he’d listen to it and that was like mind blowing that a song could do that to someone. He wasn’t your regular dad, he was actually incredibly cool and I just know that if he was still around he’d probably still offer to drive us to our shows. He was definitely one of a kind and I still hold a lot of anger and disappointment that he hasn’t been around to see us now and this song is pretty much my way of trying to put those emotions in song.”

The song begins with a soft tender piano introduction and is quickly followed by the quiet combination of guitars from Justin, Nathan and Jason as well as soft drumming from Nathan which give the song slow and emotive feeling throughout in order to mirror the song’s lyrics and theme, evident early on as Amy begins singing the opening verse to the song, “Growing up was rough, I guess we had it pretty tough/Yeah it’s true that I was daddy’s little girl/I was the apple of his eyes/But I didn’t get precious things/Like pretty prom dresses and sparkling diamond rings/I never had a chance/To have those materialistic things/But I was truly lucky/To see the smile that my daddy’s loving arms would bring.” The piano playing continues to be heard as a solitary instrument for a couple of seconds before the guitars come into focus again as Amy begins singing the next lines of the song, “He was there for me/Whenever I needed him/He would give me all he had/He would give me his everything/But things change in time/And he’s all gone/Never to be seen again/In the clouds where he belongs/He told me to be who I wanted to be/I hope that he’s proud/When he’s looking down on me.” and the dominance of the piano sound begins to fade.

The guitars come crashing into focus in a dramatic fashion, particularly the lead guitar riff from Justin Mullen and the rhythm guitar playing of Adam Benjamin as Isaac Lovelock raps over the driving electric instrumental performances from the guitarists, “I remember the moment when they took you away/Yeah, I remember everything from that day/The fear, the sadness, the reality/I never thought you could be taken from me/I remember that day, it’s all too familiar/The emotions and the pain deep inside/The tears that kept fallin’ I just couldn’t hide.” as all of the guitars are backing the vocal from Isaac, the piano playing can be heard in the background this time only slightly as the focus remains on the guitars and Isaac’s vocal delivery as he takes on the next verse too, “You always said ‘kid, reach for the stars’/Now that you’re gone, I still bare the scars/I sometimes wonder if you’re looking down on me/Did I become all that you thought I’d be/Diamond albums don’t mean s**t/When you lose the things you treasure, you gotta take the hit/Roll with the punches/Take it all in stride/Put your face in the spotlight/Don’t you ever hide.” and with that final rap verse, Isaac’s part in the song is done.

Amy comes into focus once more as she sings in a rapid-fire delivery sort of style, “Standing in the spotlight, standing center stage/Looking in the crowd tonight, I can’t see your face/You were meant to be there, when my dreams came true/You’ve been taken way too soon/But I still find myself, looking for you/A friendly face, somewhere in the crowd/I sit alone in the dressing room/Wondering if I’ve made you proud/I can’t get you back/Some things just can’t be/But when I hit the stage/I know you’re looking down on me.” and with the guitars fading out, so too does Amy’s vocal for the final track from the album.

Lyrics

darkblue = Isaac Lovelock
red = Amy Meyer

“Growing up was rough, I guess we had it pretty tough
Yeah it’s true that I was daddy’s little girl
I was the apple of his eye
But I didn’t get precious things
Like pretty prom dresses and sparkling diamond rings
I never had a chance
To have those materialistic things
But I was truly lucky
To see the smile that my daddy’s loving arms would bring

He was there for me
Whenever I needed him
He would give me all he had
He would give me his everything
But things change in time
And he’s all gone
Never to be seen again
In the clouds where he belongs
He told me to be who I wanted to be
I hope that he’s proud
When he’s looking down on me

I remember the moment when they took you away
Yeah, I remember everything from that day
The fear, the sadness, the reality
I never thought you could be taken from me
I remember that day, it’s all too familiar
The emotions and the pain deep inside
The tears that kept fallin’ I just couldn’t hide

You always said ‘kid, reach for the stars’
Now that you’re gone, I still bare the scars
I sometimes wonder if you’re looking down on me
Did I become all that you thought I’d be
Diamond albums don’t mean s**t
When you lose the things you treasure, you gotta take the hit
Roll with the punches
Take it all in stride
Put your face in the spotlight
Don’t you ever hide

Standing in the spotlight, standing center stage
Looking in the crowd, tonight, I can’t see your face
You were meant to be there, when my dreams came true
You’ve been taken way too soon
But I still find myself, looking for you
A friendly face, somewhere in the crowd
I sit alone in the dressing room
Wondering if I’ve made you proud
I can’t get you back
Some things just can’t be
But when I hit the stage
I know you’re looking down on me”

OOC: The album is all completed now, yaaay! :)

James: Aside from having the honor of working with you on an amazing track for your album, I've also gotten the chance to listen to this album in full and man... this is incredible. Every track has a meaning, every track has a direction and the lyrical content is just stellar. It's really hard choosing through all your material, which body of work is the best of yours but "Crossroads" is simply your best work to date just because it really shows your growth as a band, producers and you Amy, as a songwriter and vocalist. I can go on and on about how much I love this record ...but just know I love this album and is one of the strongest this year. Excellent job to all of you and I hope to see you all around soon

OOC: Amazing job! Really! You've done an excellent job with this. Every track is great in not only the description and lyrics and you can clearly see your hard work here. :)

Amy: Thank you James, I'm very pleased that you enjoyed the album so much, that's some really high praise. We just try to have a nice range of subjects and meanings and hopefully that came across more so in this album than any of our previous ones. It's also really great to hear that you consider our latest album as our best work, it means that we're improving and not just standing still. Anyway, I thank you very much for your kind words, I also thank you even more for appearing on the album and hopefully we can work together again sometime in the future, thanks again! :)

OOC: Wow! that's very kind, thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it :)
