THE BRAND NEW SINGLE 'EMPTY ROOM'

UserPostedImage

Title: Empty Room
Released: 28/10/12
Recorded: August - September 2012 (Baker Lake, Canada)
Length: 4:50
Genre: Alternative rock, indie rock
Writer: Ryan Williams
Producer: Colby Wilson
Label: North Hill Records

"so raw, so powerful, yet so simple" - Pitchfork

"if anyone was having any doubts about this bands credibility, look no further" - The Guardian

"after their first album who predicted the band could make something this good?" - NME

Breakdown

'Empty Room' is one of the simplest songs Misery Loves Company have created yet it leaves us with a long lasting effect. The entire song features two electric guitars layered with Ryan Williams' vocals. Nothing more, nothing less. It opens to the sound of static coming from an over-charged amp. That sound was recorded live in the studio. The first and lead guitar then takes off into a fantastic riff, which at times sounds distorted. The guitar-driven track then opens up into Williams' vocals as he sounds prominent through the long verses. A song about sorrow and heartbreak, the simple combination of a lead guitar and dreary lyrics suit Williams and Misery Loves Company to a tee. The guitar riff and melody continue the entire way through the verses. As we approach the chorus, another guitar is introduced as it plays a light melody under the lead riff. It fills the empty space well. Before Williams' vocals get a little more harsh and shouty as he admits defeat on the chorus. The lead guitar riff then disappears for the bridge as we're left with the light guitar rhythm playing as Williams begins displaying his falsetto voice, before showing his versatility again and beginning to shout the rest of the bridge, which leads into the final chorus. The song plays out to an emotional vocal session along with a loud electric which continues on past the end of the vocals, it then echos out as if all hope has now been lost.
We were told the first single would be a real taster to how the full album will sound and based on what we have here, we have a lot to look forward to!

Songwriter

"Last album I wrote most of the songs in a 3-4 day span. I was surrounded by heartbreak and locked myself away. Anyway, i've already told that story. This song was written after a girl I was well, I suppose you could say dating, had cheated on me. Although we were never really 'official' or anything, it still hurt me hard. Especially when you find out through photograph! So yeah, she had been confessing her love for me telling me about how much she loves me and wants us to get together. A day later, a photo pops up twitter of her an another dude getting greasy. It is a little stupid. As drinks start to roll however, your emotions take over and what she did became more prominent. So I was out with the boys drinking and told them the story. Then an extremely drunken me begins to get a little emotional, before I could do anything Josh handed me a page and was like 'Write down how you're feeling. Go, start writing a few lines'. Before I knew it I had a full page of words and emotions. That was the foundation of the song. So when we hit the studio in September it was all fresh on our minds so we started jamming it with a solo guitar first off. We had fully intended in adding the full band in, but after hearing it with just the raw electric guitar, we all felt something. It was incredible. Colby (our producer) was just like 'Wow' after he heard it. I think it really is one of our best, yet simplest songs we've ever made."

Personnel:

Ryan Williams - Vocals, rhythm guitar
Nathan Barker - Lead guitar, backing vocals
Josh Heyler - Tambourine
Colby Wilson - Producer

Lyrics

I was the only figure counted present at the gas station
The cold and lonely air contributed to my sudden realisation
That you have no reason to feel pity on yourself
I gave you my all and never once thought about myself
You used me as part of your game
I’m just glad you’re strong enough to live with the shame
Like the wind you come and go as you please
But I’ve got to leave now because im starting to freeze
That four-lettered word was used so loosely
You drained out all of its meaning and raw beauty

Now it’s time for me to depart
Go back to an early Californian start
Home soon, time to attune to
Living on my own now, expecting the unknown
Back to an empty room, love comes and goes too soon

And just like the old saying, chances don’t come around too often
You blew yours and won’t get a chance with me again
When my heart hits pain I begin to wonder more
How would things be if I chose to ignore your deception?
The wishful glance that once provided you with care
Has failed you now and become just a normal stare
The only thing that’s on my side is this whiskey bottle
Drown my heart and brain to get me out of this debacle
I don’t want to hear you beg for forgiveness
Sobbing about how much you’re sorry is now useless

Now it’s time for me to depart
Go back to an early Californian start
Home soon, time to attune to,
Living on my own now, expecting the unknown
Back to an empty room, love comes and goes too soon

Well sure if you like it,
You should just keep carrying on like I don’t exist
If this all makes you happy
Forget about me and go out to get pissed
One again the morning sun will rise
Live through the day with water dropping from your eyes

Now it’s time for me to depart
Go back to an early Californian start
Home soon, time to attune to,
Living on my own now, expecting the unknown
Back to an empty room, love comes and goes too soon

Sounds Like:

Amy: Jesus! this is an incredible track, I have a huge affinity for songs of heartbreak and emptiness so this is like actual perfection. There is no doubt that you guys are the best band there has been in the industry for a very long time and I every time I hear a new song I just wanna hear more and more. If it's an indication of how your next record is gonna sound then I'm quite certain that I'll be devouring it for a very very long time. I can't praise this highly enough, amazing!

OOC: This is great, I think those lyrics are some of the best that I've read here for a very long time, really great stuff!

Ryan: Wow, thanks so much, Amy! Although I disagree with us being the best band (that feat I give to y'all!) im still very grateful for your kind words. It's really pleasing to know that your not only pleasing fans but other musicians alike. We've seemed to become very good at creating songs about heartbreak so we work towards that as often as possible. Thank you, and I hope when our new album comes around you won't be disappointed!

OOC: Those are some seriously incredible comments! Thank you so much, it means alot!

Ryan Ross Hernandez: I'm so proud to have you guys signed to North Hill. I never had much doubt that you guys would put out anything less than impressive. I've admitted before, I wasn't a huge fan of the first record mostly because I had my pop-punk phase, I went through that, and then I grew up. I love that you guys are still growing and maturing with both your sound and lyrics. This is the first piece to the next piece of the puzzle, and I'm excited to hear what comes out of this record. The pure rawness and simplicity of it, draw me in as a listener on this first single. I look forward to hear it come full circle with the full-length.

Ryan: Thank you so much, man! We're absolutely honored and privileged to be at a label like North Hill, we're so grateful for the faith you guys have shown in us. Exactly. We love hearing peoples honest opinions about our music and looking back now, we fully agree. It was a half-assed record, which sold a shit load of copies. I suppose the one thing we do have to be thankful for it is the fact it has taught us a few lessons. The pop-punk phase in Misery Loves Company is long gone. It won't return. We were in our late teens writing that record, we've grown up since then. But thank you man, something I feel is vital to our music is the raw sound. We can't wait to get the full-length out now!

James: This is a great track guys, so bravo on this! I like how you make something so simple sound so captivating and enjoyable. To be specific, the two main things in the song that stand out the most and are the most enjoyable is the vocals by Ryan and that electric guitar! Nice instrumental work. Topics like this I'm very fond of so the sorrow and heartbreak topic and lyrics is something I can really relate to and the lyrics here are stellar. You guys never fail to impress and this is another offering that will be a favorite.

OOC: Nice job on the lyrics! I can almost here the song in my head since the lyrics flow so well. Good job.

Nate: Thank you, man. The was the exact effect we were going for, glad it reached you the way we intended it too! Ryan's vocals suited this track perfectly. I mean, he will be the first to tell you that he doesn't have the best voice out there, but he uses his to great effect. Thank you for your kind words, we appreciate all the comments!

OOC: Thank you. It means a lot to hear that!

Long Time No See...

So we realize it has been seriously long since the last time we talked to you guys or formally updated you all on how the album was coming along. Therefore we shall do it now and attempt to keep it all as brief as possible!
We went into the studio at Backer Lake at the start of October, we stayed there for until the end of November which was when we then left with an albums worth of material recorded and sent away to get mixed. However, upon getting the first copy back the album was lacking a cutting edge. We felt it contained too many slow paced tracks which really slowed down the momentum of the album. So we took a break over Christmas and started writing again then went back into the studio a few days ago. We re-mastered one of the earlier songs which we feel is one of the best we've ever made. Genuinely.
Although, we will be staying in the studio now until the end of January as we attempt to finish up this album once and for all and get it released to you all sometime during March/April. That's the goal. Now we know goal's aren't great because we originally had aimed to get the record out by Christmas - looking back, that was a silly promise which was never going to happen.
So, to tide you all over until the release of the album, we will be releasing our brand new single 'Broken Girl' this Sunday. The song will premier on our website and will then be offered up as a free download to anyone who 'Likes' the track on Facebook. We are so proud of this one. It's quite a personal song but it sees us take another step forward in terms of our direction and the sound on this track is probably the best example to the music we're currently surrounding ourselves in.
On a personal note we would like to confirm the news that Josh's girlfriend Kate is pregnant with his child! Josh and Kate announced it via twitter a few weeks ago, but we thought we would confirm it here. No idea when it is due, but I can say that i've never seen my best pal look so happy!
So that's it for now, remember, check back on the website this Sunday as we release our brand new single 'Broken Girl' as a free download. So stoked for you all to hear it.
Peace out,
MLC xo

Cristina: I'm sure it will be worth the wait. I can already see that this album will be close to perfection. And I'm only saying 'close to' because nothing is perfect. Excited for the new album guys, Empty Room was a stellar release as all your material is.

The End Is Not Near, It's Here

When we started Misery Loves Company we all agreed that if we ever felt the band was going into decline or going in a direction which we weren't 100% happy with, we'd call it a day until we were ready to continue in the right way. Unfortunately that time has now come.
A week or so ago or management posted that we would be releasing a new single titled 'Broken Girl' this is now not happening. We've been in a studio for the past 4-5 months writing and recording in upwards of 80 different songs. Off the 80, we failed to find 12-15 that we felt could have went on a new album.
Creativity for Misery Loves Company hit a standstill. When listening to the songs back again, we seen no originality. They all felt like a re-recorded version of the last album. This is why we feel now is the best time for us to take a break for a while and do our own thing. Note that we have not had any fallen outs, we're all still best friends but after a mutual agreement, we feel this is the best way to proceed.
After being on the road and recording for the past three years, a break is welcomed. We all intend in pursing music ventures elsewhere, some of which will be announced in the next few days.
We have also got one performance scheduled for the summer which we will unite and play for a one off. The date or show hasn't been announced yet but keep an eye out for it.
This is not a goodbye, it's more a 'see you later'. We all hope that one day we will find the right ingredients to make Misery Loves Company return.
For now, take care
Much love,
Ryan, Nathan and Josh

Ryan: Yeah man that was the options we had. Either leave it be or drag the band further into decline. Better to bow out whilst on top, eh? One door closed but a thousand more have opened, im already excited to get back into music. Will be nice to relieve ourselves of the pressure of being in a band as big as Misery was.

We could never dreamt of all we achieved. As you said though, this is just the beginning, we all have plans to continue in music. Cheers for your support man.
