THE BRAND NEW SINGLE 'EMPTY ROOM'Title: Empty RoomReleased: 28/10/12Recorded: August - September 2012 (Baker Lake, Canada)Length: 4:50Genre: Alternative rock, indie rockWriter: Ryan WilliamsProducer: Colby WilsonLabel: North Hill Records"so raw, so powerful, yet so simple" - Pitchfork
"if anyone was having any doubts about this bands credibility, look no further" - The Guardian
"after their first album who predicted the band could make something this good?" - NMEBreakdown'Empty Room' is one of the simplest songs Misery Loves Company have created yet it leaves us with a long lasting effect. The entire song features two electric guitars layered with Ryan Williams' vocals. Nothing more, nothing less. It opens to the sound of static coming from an over-charged amp. That sound was recorded live in the studio. The first and lead guitar then takes off into a fantastic riff, which at times sounds distorted. The guitar-driven track then opens up into Williams' vocals as he sounds prominent through the long verses. A song about sorrow and heartbreak, the simple combination of a lead guitar and dreary lyrics suit Williams and Misery Loves Company to a tee. The guitar riff and melody continue the entire way through the verses. As we approach the chorus, another guitar is introduced as it plays a light melody under the lead riff. It fills the empty space well. Before Williams' vocals get a little more harsh and shouty as he admits defeat on the chorus. The lead guitar riff then disappears for the bridge as we're left with the light guitar rhythm playing as Williams begins displaying his falsetto voice, before showing his versatility again and beginning to shout the rest of the bridge, which leads into the final chorus. The song plays out to an emotional vocal session along with a loud electric which continues on past the end of the vocals, it then echos out as if all hope has now been lost. We were told the first single would be a real taster to how the full album will sound and based on what we have here, we have a lot to look forward to! Songwriter"Last album I wrote most of the songs in a 3-4 day span. I was surrounded by heartbreak and locked myself away. Anyway, i've already told that story. This song was written after a girl I was well, I suppose you could say dating, had cheated on me. Although we were never really 'official' or anything, it still hurt me hard. Especially when you find out through photograph! So yeah, she had been confessing her love for me telling me about how much she loves me and wants us to get together. A day later, a photo pops up twitter of her an another dude getting greasy. It is a little stupid. As drinks start to roll however, your emotions take over and what she did became more prominent. So I was out with the boys drinking and told them the story. Then an extremely drunken me begins to get a little emotional, before I could do anything Josh handed me a page and was like 'Write down how you're feeling. Go, start writing a few lines'. Before I knew it I had a full page of words and emotions. That was the foundation of the song. So when we hit the studio in September it was all fresh on our minds so we started jamming it with a solo guitar first off. We had fully intended in adding the full band in, but after hearing it with just the raw electric guitar, we all felt something. It was incredible. Colby (our producer) was just like 'Wow' after he heard it. I think it really is one of our best, yet simplest songs we've ever made." Personnel:Ryan Williams - Vocals, rhythm guitar Nathan Barker - Lead guitar, backing vocals Josh Heyler - Tambourine Colby Wilson - Producer LyricsI was the only figure counted present at the gas station The cold and lonely air contributed to my sudden realisation That you have no reason to feel pity on yourself I gave you my all and never once thought about myself You used me as part of your game I’m just glad you’re strong enough to live with the shame Like the wind you come and go as you please But I’ve got to leave now because im starting to freeze That four-lettered word was used so loosely You drained out all of its meaning and raw beautyNow it’s time for me to depart Go back to an early Californian start Home soon, time to attune to Living on my own now, expecting the unknown Back to an empty room, love comes and goes too soonAnd just like the old saying, chances don’t come around too often You blew yours and won’t get a chance with me again When my heart hits pain I begin to wonder more How would things be if I chose to ignore your deception? The wishful glance that once provided you with care Has failed you now and become just a normal stare The only thing that’s on my side is this whiskey bottle Drown my heart and brain to get me out of this debacle I don’t want to hear you beg for forgiveness Sobbing about how much you’re sorry is now uselessNow it’s time for me to depart Go back to an early Californian start Home soon, time to attune to, Living on my own now, expecting the unknown Back to an empty room, love comes and goes too soonWell sure if you like it, You should just keep carrying on like I don’t exist If this all makes you happy Forget about me and go out to get pissed One again the morning sun will rise Live through the day with water dropping from your eyes Now it’s time for me to depart Go back to an early Californian start Home soon, time to attune to, Living on my own now, expecting the unknown Back to an empty room, love comes and goes too soonSounds Like:
