- Hi this is Abie, VEVO invited me to comment about my videos while we prepare you guys for the premiere of my upcoming new music video tomorrow. It’s good to come back to the begging of everything, I have the idea of making music videos sort of it’s the same way of visualizing what was going through my mind in that certain period, it’s crazy, but it’s a fun part of promoting your music. - Ok, so my first video ever released was from the song ‘Fake Plastic Life’ which by the way it’s the second single of my debut album, but it ended up being the lead single of that record. I don’t remember clearly how me and the director got the idea of the video as it is indeed, but I do remember that I was starting in this business so most of the concept for this video came from people who works with me, my team you know, and specially from Marc, the director of the video. I remember it was a three days shoot, because of the amount of scenes he wanted to include on it, and there was also other actors shooting additional scenes in a beach, and there’s a black and white part too, I feel like this video represents the song in a literally way, if you follow the lines of the song and compare it to the storyline of the video, you’ll perceive that it does represents what I was singing. It’s a beautiful video, Ohh also part of the photo shoot for the album came from a section I did in this video, It’s very cinematographic, don’t you think? Quote:Abie Lena "Fake Plastic Life" Love and Heartbreaks Directed by: Marc Webb Studio60 The year 1950, Abie is on a beach walking with her red spring dress and her hair in a bun, she walks to the camera singing to it, in a sunny day while families are hanging out, happy, she walks by them with a smile on her face, shaking her hand in goodbye gesture, singing the first strophe of the song. Mixed with this scene, there is Abie in a room at her house, she is sit in a chair, with the same clothes, but she is only singing at the camera, this scene keeps flashing with the beach scene, where Abie seems to be happy. Life has passed by my eyes Like a bullet crossed the sky And Now I know I lost the love of my life When time is not a friend And we tried to pretend I hided in that old box all memories we spent No, you seem very well You got yourself a fairy tale Living a good life and I'm at this hell Can you remember what we were? The times we passed in that shore In a few second after my heart toreWhen the Chorus starts, the scene cuts to a night, and Abie is on her bedroom in her sleep clothes, with her massy long hair over her face, she seems to be crying and singing the song sit in her bed looking for her wardrobe, straight to her mirror where she sees her reflect. Our love was a summer’s heat And like a station passed so fast Now you have a new life and I’m at a disguise Fake like a plastic LifeAfter the Chorus the scene comes back to Abie walking over in the beach. This time Abie is drinking a red coconut water, (you read RED!), now she is sit on the ground of the beach, looking for a happy family playing, there’s a tall man, who’s supposed to be the family’s dad, the woman, and two little kids, Abie keeps looking at them while singing the second strophe of the song. Again this scene is mixed with Abie on her rest room, sit on her sofa singing the same verses. I just want you know there is no regrets Since you have gone I just never trusted in another man But it’s fine after all Guess I’m not good with love So many times I spend looking at the clocks Even if I waited for you, probably we would not get through I always took the first steps when you should have do I have said no many prayers, for you to change your head But All I received was a kick in my assThe second chorus starts, and Abie is on her bedroom at night, she is singing the chorus of the song in the same position she was before, sit on her bed, looking at her mirror crying with her long hair on her shoulders. Our love was a summer’s heat And like a station passed so fast Now you have a new life and I’m at a disguise Fake like a plastic Life Abie gets up from her bed, and starts to walk straight to the camera singing the after chorus phrases. Now I live alone Faking a smile on my own Just to show you that I’m ok Baby! Then she comes back to her bed, while the chorus continues to be played, she takes a cigarettes and starts to smoke it desperately. Our love was a summer’s heat And like a station passed so fast Now you have a new life and I’m at a disguise Fake like a plastic LifeThe scene switches again for that sunny day on the beach, now the day is almost over, Abie is still sitting on the ground of the beach, but that Family who used to be playing with a ball is getting out, when suddenly the little boy left his ball roll to where Abie was, Abie takes the ball and give back to him, he smiles at her, she smiles to him too, when his father gets near to probably say sorry to Abie, but when he gets near Abie, he keeps looking at her, and so does she, they say goodbye and Abie leaves the beach. Maybe you think I’m all right Well that’s what I show outside Didn’t you think I would show my heart? But I live alone Faking a smile on my own Just to show you that I’m ok Baby! The Chorus starts again, and Abie is arriving at her house, she is singing the last chorus of the song, while she is taking her shoes and untying her hair, she climbs the stairs still singing it. Our love was a summer’s heat And like a station passed so fast Now you have a new life and I’m at a disguise Fake like a plastic Life
Our love was a summer’s heat And like a station passed so fast Now you have a new life and I’m at a disguise Fake like a plastic LifeWhen she arrives at her room, she looks at her wall, where there’s a picture of Abie and the man at the beach together, the video ends instead. - Working with Mar again we shoot ‘Broke Up’ in a hotel room while I was in the middle of the promotion tour of my debut album, this is probably the cheapest video I ever did, and I was the one who got the idea of making it simple and gloomy. The song was very honest and straight forward, so I told Marc: ‘let’s shoot in one night in this hotel room, me singing the song and feelings will be expressed by me as I go singing the song’s lines’. I was in a my pajamas, in the bed or looking from the mirror to the big city of Los Angeles bellow me, is there any other place in the world that can make a newcomer like I was to feel alone? There’s no way I think this is the worst song I ever wrote too, I just enjoy it because of its melodies, but I hate the lyrics! Anyway, Marc did a wonderful job with the close ups, even though I was not wearing makeup, and my hair was a mess, I do looked pretty on it, some visual aspects in a music video demands no beauty at all, and this video was supposed to show a person in disgrace. After three years I can say that I don’t like this video, I don’t like this song and I don’t like the way I looked on it, LOL, sorry but I have to be frank. Anyway here it is ‘Broke Up!’ Quote:Abie Lena “Broke Up” Love and HeartBreak Directed by: Marc Webb Studio 60 Abie is her own apartment, in a very dark night, she is a mess, just like someone that had recently had a fight and cried for so much time. The video is really simple, Abie starts to sing the song second after the video starts, she keeps sited in her bed looking to her big window that shows a big city from her apartment, she switches looks with the camera and this window, as the song goes straight to the chorus and Abie stands up, and goes to the window. In the second strophe, abir comes back to her bed where she changes the TV channels, while singing the song, at the second chorus a single tear can be seen falling from Abie’s face. The video keeps with this intimate feeling from the beginning till the end, where the audience can see a devastate Abie, with blurred eyes and massy hair. - Everytime I perform this song I feel like a whore. No doubt it’s the funniest video I made and also maybe the one I look the most beautiful. I had this vision of this rich whore working as a ‘singer’ in a cabaret like in the old Paris or something like that, so she has this man who comes frequently to visit her and they both ended up having sex by the end of the night and he always pays her for that service. But as the time goes passing by she starts to develop real feelings for him, I don’t know how can someone have sex with a person without feeling something for that person, I could never be a whore. So there is this over dramatic interpretation of the actor and I, we’re acting like if we were on a Mexican soap opera, I used to love soap opera when I was younger in my home country Brazil, it was inevitable that one day I would act like a soap opera actress in one of my videos. It was funny to shoot and the director Francis has this film direction feel once he’s a Hollywood director, I don’t know, I have the bless to be surrounded by so many amazing and talented people working with me, I know I’m signed with a big mainstream label, but they gave the right sources so I could work on my imagery with great style. I’m happy for that. Quote:“Pimp’s Tears” Abie Lena Love and Heartbreak Directed by: Francis Lawrence The video starts in a sophisticated cabaret, where gentlemen are entering in the front door, with their suits, to enjoy the show, the video focus on one of these gentlemen, who’s supposed to be Abie’s lover, he is wearing a white suit, he enters the door of the cabaret, and he finds a table so he can sit relax and drink some whiskey.
Abie is in the dress room preparing to perform in the cabaret, but the music is already playing and she is lip-syncing the lyrics of the song, as she keeps looking at the mirror putting her makeup, and dressing herself with a red dress. When suddenly a female dancer enters the door of Abie’s dressing room, holding a rose bouquet with a card on it, she gives the bouquet to Abie, who reads the card, and after it a tear drops from Abie’s eyes, but everything is too overdramatic to looks sad, Abie is dressing up like she was whore, she tries to hide her tears putting more makeup on her face.
While in the stage of the cabaret, a man announces that Abie would perform, seconds after she enters the stage, to sing, and while she is singing she finds the man wearing white suit in a table near the stage, he keeps smiling at Abie and sending kisses to her, while she keeps pretending she is a shy girl, rolling her eyes to another direction.
The video switches to Abie again at her dressing room, it seems that the performance is over, and she is resting and taking her makeup off, when the man enters the door to compliment her, and then they kiss each other, just like a classic Hollywood movie, where the lady is held by the gentleman and lifted down.
Again the videos changes to a hotel room, where Abie is lying down beside the man singing the final phrases of the song, she is naked under the sheets and covers of the bed, before she ends the song, the mand wakes up, dress himself and leaves some money near Abie, she doesn’t look at him, she keeps looking to the roof of the hotel room singing the song, the man leaves the room with no goodbye kisses.
The song ends with a Abie laughing sarcastically while she keeps looking at the money the man left for her.
- This is my favorite vídeo ever! I love the concept I created, I love the music and I love even more the opportunity I had to work with Jonas Akerlund, he’s a visionary and guess what? He called me to work with me in this song. It was surreal, he told me that he was listening to the song on the radio and he thought that the song could be a sound track for a big movie, but instead of being a soundtrack he decided to create a movie for it, well in a short form of a music video. The song is about reborn, like phoenix, and Jonas thought about this burning scene and then vanishing into ashes so I could fly in the sky, he does these very artistic visual videos different from a storyline video, so It was also helpful when I was creating the visual aspects of the album itself. There are flowers on it and there is a big creepy forest, it’s also the most expensive video I did. But it’s all worth it, I think it raised the song to another level and that is what videos are made for. It has the duty to increase your fans’ perception about your music and this video did that. I’m sure my fans think about this era having this video as their main reference and I do wanted to be seen that way as a visual artists too. Quote:Cold Spring Sirected by: Jonas ArkelundA fog covers the entire forest at night, we almost can’t see Abie on her White dress, standing like a ghost, there’re trees and flowers everywhere and we can’t see the background of the scene because it’s too dark, but there’s a deep camera projection that alludes us to think that maybe Abie is in front of a house. Abie sings the firsts strophe and chorus of the song surrounded by these cold winds and the pure darkness, in this scene there’re lots of close up on Abie’s face and her gestures as well, just to show how she interpreters the song, she’s with her hair free on her shoulders, her eyes are heavily makeup and she’s wearing a red lipstick. The second strophe and chorus is performed at the same forest, but now there’s light coming from the black background of the place, this makes Abie’s face expressions change to something more happier than she was before, but still she putting a lot of effort on her interpretation by suffering every take of this video. The scenes alternates to close ups on purple flowers placed on the ground and Abie’s free style gestures and face expressions. The bridge of the song comes and now the forest starts to get lighted, and this light comes from Abie’s feet, suddenly they turn into fire, and so from behind her a big house is burning and the light of the fire is reflecting on Abie herself, making her dress change color from white to red and blue tears fall from her eyes as she gives her all to this final shot, the most desperate performance she have done since the video started. In this scene there’s a mix of scenes, that goes from certain rooms at the house burning till Abie’s special effect dress changing or her crying blue tears from her eyes, or even she performing the song, or the forest lighted by the fire behind her. The last chorus of the song which comes right after the bridge of the song, show Abie disappearing by turning her body into ashes, as the scenes shows her body she starts to be taken by the Wind and her ashes flies with all that fire, till she sings the final words of the song, and she complete disappear quickly and aggressive in a single wind blowing. - This video was initially planned to be directed by Francis Lawrence with other actors, I wasn’t supposed to appear on it, it would be this kind of mini-movie video, but Francis was reluctant in directing it because he was invited to direct a big Hollywood movie at the same time and so I told him that I wasn’t be upset if he decline my invitation to direct the movie and so he did. One of the reasons the video took a little while to be released was that all directors were busy at that time, but Jake Nava said that he wanted to do the video and I had never worked with him before. He came with the idea of making a black and white video and I didn’t want it to be that way until he convinced me by showing me the storyline and the camera that he was going to shoot the video. It was shoot with an old camera to feel like it has been shoot for a very long time and there is Paris s backdrops which is fantastic. People used to say that ‘The Same Tear’ is my best song, despite I doubt them I agree that it was a really well written song, I didn’t need an elaborate video to promote it, I needed a video to coexist with it but it couldn’t take the spotlight from the music itself. Jake is very charming when he’s trying to convince you, he used all his tricks and charm to convince me to shoot the video in black and white and I think in the end he was right. Quote:The Same Tear Directed by: Jake NavaAbie is walking in a park in Paris facing the camera, the video is black and white and Abie is clearly very upset on her face expression. The video consists of Abie interpreting the music as she goes for a walk on Paris, the photography of the video is stunning, and it shows the old and passionate Paris in a cold day, Abie is wearing a black overcoat, she’s also wearing a heavy makeup specially on her eyes, making them look like crystal once the nature color of Abie’s eyes is blue.Abie gets in a bridge where she stands to sing some of the song’s line, she keeps looking to nowhere as the camera turn around her in a 180° degrees angle. The black and white and the old photography of the video contrasts to Abie’s young and much known face, the sadness in this video is not only on Abie, but it’s in everywhere she looks Abie keeps walking till she enters in a bar, the scene in this bar consists of close ups of Abie and her love interest’s close ups of their mouths and eyes, seems like they’re facing each other for a long time, but the look in their eyes and the shut mouth determines the strange feeling between them. After this scene, a tear drop from Abie’s eyes, as she keeps facing through a reflection her boyfriend leaves the place. The final scene of the video shows Abie leaving the bar too, all alone walking through the old Paris, just like when she started the vídeo. - Broken is about my father, I was going through a hard time in my life and I always look up to him when I find myself desperate and lonely. Ray Kay was invited by Studio60 to direct the video for the song, I already knew that I was sick by that time and I was recovering myself already, so he came to the rehab to talk with me about the video and I told him I wanted to make a homage for my father with this video. I told the director the story behind the song, which is the last fight I had with him, before he got sick too, and I also told him how close I was feeling to him once I was facing myself in that situation I saw him a long time ago before he died. Ray understood my needs of expression and he came up with the idea of me visiting my father on his grave and so he said that we could make the day looks like my heart, gray and sad. I thought it was a very smart idea. I have a strange sensation when I’m watching this video, it feels like I’m seeing my father again but he’s dead and I can’t reach him but he’s right in front of me in all those personal footages, it’s weird. I hate it and I love it the same way, but my fans always say that this video made them feel closer to myself, like I exposed them my deepest feelings on it and they understood my pain. It’s very emotional. Quote:Abie Lena 'Broken' Seasons Director: Ray Kay Studio60 It's a gray day, the cemetery is empty, dead leaves on the ground and Abie is walking above them with a serious face expression, she’s searching for a certain grave while she keeps looking on the ground, she’s wearing a black dress with a black umbrella to block the sun from her face, but it’s worthless, because there’s no sun at all, the day is really gray and melancholy, Abie stops at one grave, that’s probably the grave she went to visit, she looks down and she reads the epitaph ‘Carlos Oliveira Lena – beloved father’. A tear drops from her eyes and the song begins.
Footage of Abie as a baby taking a bath held by her mom and being watched by her father, old footages of Abie as a kid playing with her sister Magie is also showed, all of these footages are switched with a scene of Abie on her knees in an empty house surrounded by photographs and dust, she’s lip-syncing the song lyrics the same time the old footages are showed.
The footages goes running through time, we can see Abie as a teenager, later in the video, they’re all images from birthdays and Christmas and all of them are very happy, Abie had a sweet relationship with her father as seen in the video, the other scene where Abie is at the empty house, shows a standing Abie looking down the photographs on the ground, and in the second chorus of the song she’s down on her knees again holding the photographs at her heart like if that was everything she had to hold to from those times.
The song goes running to its climax and so the footages now shows Abie crying because of a scratch on her finger, she’s just a kid and her father comes to comfort her, embracing her around her shoulders, the same moment Abie is giving the highest notes of the song and quickly the scene switches to Abie at the cemetery, now she’s crying and it start raining, the day is grayer than before and Abie is looking down the grave of her father the same time a statue of an angel is placed behind her and the scenes goes fading away from Abie while the final lines of the song is sung by her, and the camera goes running away from her and that grave. When the song ends and the rain is falling down, she moves herself out of the cemetery slowly as the camera angle is already in the sky. - This is it guys, all my videos revised by me for you, don’t forget to comeback tomorrow to watch the premiere of my new video ‘You make me die’ Love you ;) Edited by user 03 April 2013 06:21:50(UTC)
