The lights go down and the crowd suddenly cheer with excitement, GirlSpice's giant 'GS' logo is seen being lowered from the ceiling, all four of the girls sat on top of it, smiling at the audience reaction. There's a pause and they all jump off of the logo, all of them wearing a different coloured bra top, with leather leggings and heels.
Once the giant logo prop disappears from view, the stage is seen decorated as a vintage home, part of the stage is a living room with old fashioned arm chairs and cushions, the next set a dining room with a long, narrow table, and the last a clean, simplistic kitchen with a large breakfast bar. The group turn around and run towards the living room, each of them taking a seat as Kimberly sings the first verse, Sophia follows with the pre-chorus, before the pounding chorus hits. As it does, GirlSpice stand up suddenly and flip a coffee table over, as well as the armchairs before beginning to rip the cushions open.
They energetically run over to the dining room set for the second verse, three of the girls sit down whilst Nadia crawls across the long dining table and sings the verse in a soft, seductive voice. She throws off things as she crawls across, while the rest of GirlSpice begin to kick over the chairs in the dining room, the remaining plates of food left on the table leading to a food fight by the time the chorus comes as Nadia jumps off the table and joins in.
GirlSpice continue their wild performance by running to the final set, a simplistic kitchen which looks immaculate compared to the girls who look messy at this point with food over their bodies and their head messed up. They all begin to open a load of cupboard doors in the kitchen and throw things everywhere, raiding the fridge and beginning another food fight which soon turns the kitchen into a wreck. GirlSpice skip through the kitchen while singing the final chorus, causing a load of chaos, before a fire is set off. They all laugh and quickly run from the kitchen and off the stage, where they're no longer seen. The lights quickly dim again and all that is seen is the fire and a screen that shows the word "REBEL".
Hear the song below:
"Rebel" is the lead single to GirlSpice's upcoming ninth studio album, which will be their first in over two years. Night Rider became the group's most successful album to date, receiving a Diamond certification. Although the girls hit it big with their brand of easy-listening dance-pop tunes, it seems that this new record will give the girls a harder, more edgier sound judging from the first single.
Never have GirlSpice been seen in this light before, as the girls get a little chaotic with almost-shouted vocals over a pounding electronic beat that is sure to go down on a storm in clubs. The girls took it up a notch with dance music on the last album, but this time round, they're bringing it to a whole new level, and it seems that Nadia, Chantal, Sophia and Kimberly are ready to push GirlSpice back to the forefront of the girl groups in the industry.
"There was this whole burst of new girl groups around and we think it's beginning to die down now, the guys have been putting female groups to shame with the likes of Weekend around, so we wanna bring it back for the girls," Kimberly stated. "It's a carefree, energetic song that's a new sound and attitude for GirlSpice, but there's that fun, feisty feel to it that has always been in our songs," Nadia added.
Reviewers are certainly on the fence with the new single, and it's not surprising, "Rebel" is most definitely a love it or hate it kinda song. Popjustice previously said they "don't know what to think" of it, whilst Culture Uncut were "blown away". What do you think of GirlSpice's comeback song? We'll let you be the judge...
