LINER NOTES / A MESSAGE FROM TRENT: This record is a disaster. This EP is a mess, stitched together from pieces and samples of recordings spanning the last year. Consequently, I don't expect you to like it. But it needed to see the light of day. This EP is easily the best representation of my mind right now, and I don't think I'll be ever to capture my feelings so perfectly ever again. Excuse the mess. TRACK 1: .execute GENRE: Electro-Industrial, Ambient The EP begins with a grinding crash and squeals of feedback. A voice can be heard screaming in the background of the noise, although it's hard to discern what the voice is saying. Various sound clips play: women moaning, screams, things being smashed. The most prominent sample is of a man crying, screaming, and begging for mercy, lifted from the movie Hostel. All of these dark sounds are accompanied by a slow, plodding, ominous synth beat and electronic drum line. The audio levels shift back and forth, sometimes the synthesizer is more prominent, and sometimes the screams of agony drown out the music. Trent mumbles almost incoherently in the background the whole time. The track serves as a strange intro to the EP, perhaps being an omen for what is to come. we're going to have a malfunction here, goddamn it fuck don't tell don't tell not allowed to tell don't tell not allowed to tell don't tell don't tell not allowed to tell fuck please stop please god i'm bleeding out and i'm wondering if god and dog are two different things |

OOC: Okay, I'm not being facetious at all: "i'm bleeding out and i'm wondering if god and dog are two different things," is probably one of the best lyrics I've ever seen written on here. I love it. So there you go.

TRACK 2: BRAIN DRAIN GENRE: Sludge Metal, Noise Metal, Industrial Rock Segueing in seamlessly from ".execute," the second track begins with a loud drum fill. The production on this track is significantly different from the first one, sounding more dirty and raw, a departure from Trent's usual production style which is crisp and polished. The song lumbers along with a distorted, raw, odd-meter riff and pounding, tribal drums. Trent's voice is garbled and distorted, echoey and fuzzy, and he yells along with the beat with eccentric gusto. The song is relatively short, around 2 minutes and 45 seconds, so it feels as if the music has no time to cool down or relent from it's steady barrage of sludgy riffage and frantic drums. The song ends as suddenly as it started, with a drum fill and a final scream. you took a warm death straight outta my hands down a drano and dish-soap cocktail pissing intravenously
gotta sleep it off teeth and gums waste away something like a gangrene - cancer wouldn't want to drift away
to put my nerves at ease it don't hurt when i bleed, yeah
i'm a real man i'm a real man i'm a real man i'm a real man
can't sicken my soul rolling my eyes at you can't find my sweaty center soul cut off my arm for you
don't punch it don't kick concrete waste away want to bite like rawhide choker empty socket seems to say
time to make it real easy time to make it like a real man
i'm a real man i'm a real man i'm a real man i'm a real man
shitting in my heart blood out of anywhere hot molten liquid spew burning like a solar flare
i'm a real man real man i'm a real man i'm a real man real man i'm a real man i'm a real man i'm real, man |

TRACK 3: DE-SPIEZ GENRE: Industrial Metal Beginning immediately with the blare of a siren, the third track of Malfunction is a fast paced industrial metal song in the vein of Ministry or Oomph! it maintains a steady rhythm with a militaristic marching beat and chugging guitars accented by synthesizer notes and distorted bass. Trent's vocals are yelled in an almost spoken-word style, and are once again heavily distorted and modified as he barks each line in rhythm with the steady pounding beat. Quote:"I almost thought the lyrics were too bitter, too ugly, when I wrote them. That's why their on here and not on an actual album. I remember - at least I think - that I wrote this song late at night after doing a lot of coke. That's why the song is so irritable, if that makes any sense. It drags on and on and just assaults your senses. I wanted it to get on people's nerves." - Trent" Indeed, the song does drag on, for almost 8 minutes, of what might be considered needless filling monotonous riffs as Trent rants and raves like a madman, coughing, gagging, screaming, hooting and all but clawing his vocal chords out. The song ends abruptly with the sample of an explosion and a scream, segueing into the next track, "Gunz 'N Shit" |

Florian Lefevre: "I wanted to get on people's nerves," is the most beautiful thing I have ever heard said about a song. I love it. Most music is far too easy to listen to. We accept, most of us, that anything too easy to read is bullshit, but most people....they fail to appreciate the same thing being said of music. I listened to this once, and I liked it because it challenged me. And then I went and ingested an amount of cocaine that probably weighed about as much as my balls. Then....well then I FUCKING LOVED IT! Listen to this song, everyone. |

TRACK 4: Gunz 'N Shit (Simian Remix) GENRE: House, Electro-Industrial The 4th track and first remix on Malfunction is a remix of one of Shadowmachine's most popular songs, "Simian," off of their previously released debut album 'Machine Music.' The 'Gunz 'N Shit' remix is huge change from the romping industrial rock of the original version. Instead of a steady guitar/bass/synth line, the song relies on a slow, reserved bassline that is sampled from another previous Shadowmachine song, 'Shine.' With it's slow, plodding rhythm and brooding synth accents, its transformed from the abrasive industrial song into an almost relaxing electro-house song. The lyrics are slightly different, with verses omitted, and Trent's vocals are distorted and glitchy. The choruses, however, still maintain the rock feel of the original version with loud vocals, monstrous production and grungy guitar. The song plods on and on until it's inevitable end. i'm machiavellian i'm machiavellian i'm machiavellian i'm machiavellian i've got my mossberg, violence with realism i'm full of angst and mach-mach-chiavellianism i've got my trucker cap, perpetual hunting season i'm just a goddamn a-a-ape i'm a simian s-simian s-simian s-simian s-s-s-s-simian i've got my mossberg, violence with realism i'm full of angst and mach-mach-chiavellianism i've got my trucker cap, perpetual hunting season i'm just a goddamn a-a-ape i'm a simian don't try to fuck with me got my own mouth to feed don't try to fuck with me got my own mouth to feed don't try to fuck with me got my own mouth to feed don't try to fuck with me got my own mouth to feed realism realism pseudo-surrealistic-anti-fag-simian-ism |

TRACK 5: Heroin 2-Step (Orion Remix) GENRE: EBM, Electro-Industrial The 2nd remix on Malfunction is a somewhat upbeat rendition of "Orion," from the Machine Music album. The original was a slow, brooding darkwave song with a plodding, demonic beat. The Heroin 2-Step remix is much more accessible, starting with a twinkling synth line that turns into a strong electro beat. The remix ends up being a catchy, danceable version of the original, and would sound equally at home in a nightclub or a goth bar. Trent's vocals are less dramatic and more reserved as he salaciously recites the lyrics. The remix, while lacking the substance of the original, makes up for it in pure catchyness and danceability. TRACK 6: Convulsion (Palpitation Remix) GENRE: Trip Hop, Electronica, Post-Industrial Track 6 of the Malfunction EP is another remix, this time of "Palpitation," one of Shadowmachine's highest charting singles. The original is a quirky industrial-rock song with catchy guitar licks, tinny sounding beats and snappy, precise drums. Convulsion, the remix, is a much slower paced, groove oriented version. It is performed completely by Trent, who programmed the beats, key lines, and samples. The track plods along with a fluttering electronic drumline and slow electronic beats as Trent softly sings, the vocals sometimes barely audible over the music. Convulsion also features extra lyrics, which add to the surreal, isolated feeling of the song. |

OOC: wow I'm falling behind on this shit TRACK 7: Star Spangled (Amerika Remix) GENRE: House, Electro, EBM Amerika's 'Star Spangled' remix is, like most other remixes on this EP, a departure from the original song. Gone is the catchy beat and the subtle instrumentation, this time eschewed in favor of low, rumbling bass and swirly, ethereal samples. It is comparable to the 'Gunz N' Shit' remix of 'Simian' that appears earlier in the EP, as it is a much more laid back remix of an energetic song. Many of the lyrics are cut out, leaving just a few jumbled samples of Trent singing and a chorus, lending more similarities to dance or house music than to industrial. |
