RYAN ROSS HERNANDEZ STUDIO SESSIONS
the making of his sixth studio album | behind the scenes

MAY 30, 2013

First and foremost, thank you to everyone who's given me a warm welcome back. It's been a long and winding road, but slowly I'm regaining the confidence to do what I love most.

I haven't spoken with you guys in a while, just writing in word to you, the fans. I'm going to keep this as short as possible and be to the point because I don't feel my opinion matters that much any longer.

Break in the Clouds came out last May, it's been a year now. This Summer, I'll be putting out a new record. I figure it's not a true “return” if you will, until you have a group of songs to listen to on a album. I still love Break in the Clouds, I'll still be playing those songs live, but those songs represent a time of my life that's in the past, a time that already happened. Now I'm in a new phase. I'm 35. If I had my way, with every new turn of the calender, I would release a new album.

If someone would have asked me two months ago if I would be releasing an album this year, point blank I would have said, “no.” But as a singer-songwriter, when you see something meaningful occurring in front of you, be it in a few melodies or a few written words on paper, you know you can't let that sit around for too long.

I've never recorded an album on a schedule, nor have I recorded one this quickly. I've been toying around with ideas in the studio since March, but I did not get serious about it and call in my band and producer until just four weeks ago. We are in the studio seven days a week, anywhere between twelve and eighteen hours a day. I don't know what it's called yet. But it'll be coming out this Summer. It's not even a finished product yet, but it'll be out for the public to hear within weeks after its completion.

I want to try a new strategy to releasing and promoting an album. Last time around I had to do a few interviews here and there to get word out of the album, since I was unable to sing. This time, I really want the music to do the talking for me. What better promotion than to be out on the road, playing songs in front of true fans?

I will ponder on that idea for the rest of the evening.

- Ryan

Arianna: Thank goodness! It feels so much longer than a year since the last record, but I'm excited to hear there's a new one to look forward to at last. I know you'll once again make magical, timeless music for the fans to go crazy over, and for the rest of us musicians to envy. *giggles* Can't wait!

Ryan: It's my new outlook. Hopefully it works out. I truly feel as if my opinion honestly doesn't matter that much at all. Someone can love me or they can hate me, but it's going to be in terms of musical taste, not for something else I say. Thanks for looking forward to it.

Ryan: Thank you for the very kind words, Ari. I am certainly trying to surpass the last record, which is a task in itself because that was the best record I've ever made. It's truly a pleasure to hear such from a peer, who is a very talented artist and quite good friend of mine. I appreciate it, darling.

RYAN ROSS HERNANDEZ STUDIO SESSIONS
the making of his sixth studio album | behind the scenes

JUNE 1, 2013

When I'm in the studio, when I'm feeling it, it's very tough to take me out of that element. This is my home, my work place. It's where I belong. Something really meaningful for me as an artist is about to happen. I can feel it in my bones.

30 second acapella audio clip:
“I've put your memory in the suitcase
I always carry the weight around
Wear a wig and pretend you're someone else
I have my fair share of loses
You are one of them
And my panic attacks increase more with each night”

Stephanie Fierce: One thing I love about you as an artist, unlike some current band at the moment, is that you don't try too hard to be "artsy" with your music, so it comes off as genuine and from a true place. As musicians, are job is to create the best verse or the best chorus possible, but some of us have that gift where things come organically as well, and you have that gift. Just the structure of your songs, gives you that feel that is real and it's why many can connect with your music. Looking forward to see how this project turns out!

ALBUM ANNOUNCEMENT

August 26, 2013

On the album title:

"With being an artist, a touring and recording musician for as long as I've been. I think that has made me hate feeling stagnant, I don't enjoy it. I can be a week at home, but then I would go somewhere else for another week. It doesn't matter if I'm touring or not. That is the life of a musician, that's my life. I have three places I call home, three places you see on tour shirts because they are what I consider home when I'm not touring; New York, California, Montana. When I was unable to tour while going through my vocal issues and recovering from the surgery thereafter, I spent a lot of time bouncing from those places. I took a road trip from Los Angeles to Bozeman, Montana last summer. I tried to find both the beauty in being alone and the beauty in being with someone during that time. Traveling Tales, that's what this collection of songs are. They are a new arsenal of eleven or twelve songs, that I can take on the road with me. They write out the next chapter of me as a musician and as a 35 year old human being."

Song Review, by Rolling Stone

"Going Down to the River" indicates the return of Ryan Ross Hernandez to music, and if we're lucky it'll mean him stick around for years to come. The once outspoken singer-songwriter has been quiet for the last year or so, stepping away from the things that made him a tabloid fixture once. After literally being silent for months after two throat surgeries, his voice slowly returning to form, and a new album on the horizon.

If "Going Down to the River" is any indication of what we can expect from the guitarist's sixth studio album, Traveling Tales, we are getting a progression from last year's Break in the Clouds, as Hernandez dives deeper into American roots music. On the first single, RRH sounds as comfortable and laid back as ever. The music comes in over a layering of voices speaking, while the listening is unable to decipher what they say, but it gives off the vibe of friends hanging out. Once the music takes over, it creates a perfect end-of-summer, coming of Fall vibe. Filled with relaxed guitar chords, clapping, stomping, and a chorus that is bound to get stuck in your head.

But for everyone who thinks the song downplays the 35 year old singer's instrument of choice, the guitar, it doesn't. With the over minute and fifteen second instrumental break, Hernandez leads the bass, keys, and infectious drum beat, with a rootsy solo that builds until the last few seconds of the song where it slowly starts to fade away, with the rest of the music. As a standalone song, the fading of the instruments marks as a nice touch, but will likely be more effective once a song follows it on the album.

Lyrics

Alright, we goin' down to the river tonight [laughs]

We're going down to the river
Where the moon meets the water
While the seasons a-changin'
The summer sun is settling, find your lightweight coat for the fall
Let's start a bonfire to keep us all warm
We'll invite all our friends
I'll grab my guitar, we'll sing a tune we all know
So strap on your dancing boots, I'll wear my golden hat
This is the kind of night that the Western winds bring ya

You got your pretty hair down, down
In your favorite dress even though you freezin'
I can watch your beauty and raven hair run wild with the breeze by the river

Won't you sing, sing, sing, like this is a familiar song?
Everyone going down to the river, gonna lose yourself tonight
I'll trade my day to feel this free by the river

There's no need to bring your worries here
Loneliness has lost its beauty
A Christian girl filled that vacancy, she the only beauty I need
Now she and I dance to old time records, no more Blue
You can fall asleep on my chest and listen to the music in my heart
If you want, just pack a suitcase, it's all you'll need
'Cause this is the kind of night you only hear about by the Yellowstone

You got your pretty hair down, down
In your favorite dress even though you freezin'
I can watch your beauty and raven hair run wild with the breeze by the river

Won't you sing, sing, sing, like this is a familiar song?
Everyone going down to the river, gonna lose yourself tonight
I'll trade my day to feel this free by the river

You got my soul singin' a different tune in another key
A song is all you need to keep your love where the light is
Where the moon meets the water
You'll finally learn
I love you further than the map can go
Woah, woah, woah, woah, woah

Won't you sing, sing, sing, like this is a familiar song?
Everyone going down to the river, gonna lose yourself tonight
I'll trade my day to feel this free by the river

Ryan Ross Hernandez's Commentary

The Song

“I think only once before in the five albums that I've done prior to Traveling Tales, has the first single been the first song on the record too. But I feel comfortable putting "Going Down to the River" as the first kind of taste taken off the album. I have no clue whether it's good first single or not, I'm not an artist seeking any hits with any songs I put out anymore, but I enjoy the song. I think it's very pleasant to listen to and I love playing it, we've played it for about two months so far on tour, and it's been incredible the reception it's gotten live. That was also an indication that it needed to be put out to lead the way for this record. How much the live crowd, which I can is the most important crowd, how they would get up on their feet and clap, stomp along, without knowing the words, but just enjoying the music. That's a freeing expression and I feel that this song is very free, too. It's not stacked with lofty metaphors, it's very visual and simplistic in a way. It has this live recorded instrumental section at the end, which I think takes up over a minute on tape, which we even cut down. I think on this song you can hear, and hopefully when they hear the entire record, how much fun myself and all these other great musicians were having making music together.”

Sounds Like

Ryan: Thank you for the kinds words, you are far too sweet. I'm really proud of the song though, I feel like it's a nice lead into this record. I know we don't know each other too well, but no need to call me Mister Hernandez. I already know I'm older than you and pretty much everyone else.

Ryan: Ryan Ross Hernandez, my namesake and a massive influence. I remember quite fondly how you influenced my second Misery Loves Company record quite a bit, took it in a complete different path, which was great. I was wondering when we'd see you back, the last I really heard was you were having trouble with your voice. Glad to see it held up during this. Song is brilliant as always, man. Awesome to have you back, counting down to your new record now.

OOC: Again as always, excellent lyrics and RP.

RRH: It's both very heartwarming and uncomfortable for me when I hear that I influence someone. It obviously means a lot to influence a fellow musician, but I still don't have an answer for it. I think in the past I have expressed how much I enjoyed that second MLC record. All I can say is thank you so much for listening to my music and taking what you hear that deeply, to such point. I had quite a bit of trouble with my voice in the past year or two, this is the second album I make with my voice not being 100% while I record it, so that was interesting. But we're getting there, I've been touring for two months, three months to go, voice is getting better every night. Thank you for listening. I've been touring, but I promise to check out PURE soon.

OOC: Thank you, it means a lot to hear that. Ever since the last album I've been very weary about the lyrics and the style of it being very simplistic, without as witty or metaphoric as lyrics I've written in the past. So it's very nice to now that other people like this lyric writing style too.

RRH TALKS ABOUT TRAVELING TALES

September 24, 2013

On the sound of the record:

"Traveling Tales, musically, is the natural progression from Break in the Clouds. If you listen to Break in the Clouds, then put on Traveling Tales, it won't throw you off. It takes its form from a very rootsy, Americana songwriting style. I've thought a lot about being asked how the record sounds and how I'm going to answer it. It sounds like a group of musicians who went into the studio, not in the mindset of writing hits or feeling the pressure of having to make an album, but just to have fun, to have a good time creating music together. That's what we did! That's what I wanted to capture on tape and I'm so proud of this record because I feel like that was accomplished. I think people are going to listen and think, "fuck, these people are having fun playing music!" In some songs we left small outtakes of people talking still into the mic after wrapping up recording a song or laughter or a giggle. It comes from the heart of a musician, a singer-songwriter. "

On his current music presence:

"I'm very happy with it. It feels like I'm entering a comfort zone I hadn't found before. I don't need worshipers, I don't want anyone worshiping me or my music. I don't need that music time of space in someone's life. My music is for when you need it, it's there. Traveling Tales is a wonderful record if what you're into is a Sunday morning vibe, if you want to drink bourbon while having a conversation with a friend, if you want to listen to a record while driving to the airport; I'm your guy. I don't seek attention from people anymore from anything besides the records I put out. Just the same as I don't need to spin in every radio station, every hour of every day for nine months. It's not my calling, and I applaud anyone who is having that success now. I'm just here if you wanna come out to a show one night with your boyfriend or girlfriend, or just want to hang out with friends at a concert. If you want to detox a bit from all the club music. Then you might hear too much of this, and want to hear something made on a machine, and I will too."
