OOC: I think you should present the next award, at least the first introduction speech, it was HILARIOUS... very well written.

2013 So Far and So Soon - Panel
Greetings Music Listeners. In the past few months I've left the music critic world alone. We're all still alive somehow. The music world didn't crumble. Sure Vanity took over it for a couple months and the boys from Weekend started a record label, and some guy named Alec Holter pretended he was a music journalist for a few months, but now I am back to make sense of it all. I've been busy on a journey of self discovery, meditation, wild sex. Really I was busy with my day job of running all things Nomad Records, planning the No Venues Tour, and participating in the release of music rather than reflecting and commenting on it. But now that I am looking to start Max-Volume again, I want to go over what I missed. How will I do that? With a panel to discuss the best and worst of 2013 so far and what we anticipate or expect to happen for the rest of the year.

For this panel, I and a few of my colleagues will choose two albums each as the best albums of 2013 so far, two albums as the worst, and two albums that we anticipate for the rest of the year. As well we will each discuss the biggest singles, scandals, and more that have come out of music this year.

I will need members for this panel of course. So drop me an email (OOC: PM me) to participate.

PREDICTIONS

The Goldie Awards are in a week and in anticipation, the blogosphere is steadily exploding with predictions as to who will take home an award for each category. With albums and singles from more than the last 365 days nominated, its sure to be a tough competition for any award. The Max-Volume team is here to give our take on the nominations for the Goldie Awards, so here we go!

UserPostedImage
Reported Failure - Lunar Utero | Jennifer Armstrong - It's Okay To Not Be Okay | Pixie - Walk Alone
4U Girls- Urban Knockouts | James Urie - Retaliate

Record of the year is one of the biggest awards of the night, rivaled only by Artist of the Year and Album of the Year. The category differs from Song of the Year in that it is awarded for performance and production rather than writing and composition, although a song certainly must be strong all around to win either category. the Goldies are new, so little precedent exists for how they lean. Some theorize that the two rock songs ("Retaliate" and "Lunar Utero") will split any rock-leaning voters. 4U Girls is an unexpected nomination for a single that really didn't get much attention. So we at Max-Volume have settled on the following prediction:
Will Win: Jennifer Armstrong - It's Okay To Not Be Okay
Should Win: Pixie - Walk Alone
Dark Horse: Reported Failure - Lunar Utero
Jennifer Armstrong's smash was one of the biggest singles this year so far and its still fresh in everyone's minds. Coupled with a smash album it makes it the sure fire bet. Pixie, however, delivered a solid dance-pop crossover track that after continued listens makes Armstrong's pop-rock ballad seem cliche and trivial. Reported Failure delivered a solid song as well with a huge critical acceptance behind it and its album. They could swoop in and surprise everyone, but Jennifer Armstrong seems more likely.

UserPostedImage
Isabel - Dancing In The Dark |Vile Hour - Common Technicalities | Aubrey Mikkel - Victorious
Julia Volkova - Haunted | Weekend - Fired Up

For their first go at being a legitimate awards show, The Goldies wont pick anything too unexpected. So although the category is tough there are a couple of choices that seem unlikely: Vile Hour is too bizarre, new, and trendy to be picked. Aubrey Mikkel probably wont take it either. She is new and the Goldies will probably wait for her next album. Isabel's smash album is a clear front-runner, but it was released over a year ago, which might hurt its chances.
Will Win: Julia Volkova - Haunted
should Win: Isabel - Dancing In The Dark
Dark Horse: Weekend - Fired Up
Julia Volkova has the only rock release nominated. Isabel did pick up a Chaos Award for her album, but missed a Fans Choice award. Add this inconsistency to the fact that her latest single has been underwhelming and her chances are hurt. Weekend has a chance too but they're young and scandalous and the goldies wont want to be seen endorsing them or their music which is sub-par compared to Volkova's. With that said, Isabel's album was absolutely Chaos award worthy and is also worthy of a Goldie more so than Volkova's sexed-up, emo, vampire album.

UserPostedImage
Reported Failure - Lunar Utero | Isabel - I Love You (And You Too) | Jennifer Armstrong - It's Okay To Not Be Okay
James Urie - Retaliate | Cristina Lake - Blinded By The Weakness

Song of the Year is a very similar animal to Record of the Year. Awarded for the writing and composition, the creepy, uncomfortable lyrics of Reported Failure stands out from the rest which could help or hurt them. Cristina Lake's single was met with limited success relative to the rest. With the most airplay success, and fairly uplifting lyrics Jennifer Armstrong's hit is a frontrunner. Isabel of course is also a contender for anything shes nominated in. James Urie is thrown in also and with no previous Goldies to draw from, a victory from him is possible.
Will Win: Jennifer Armstrong - It's Okay To Not Be Okay
Should Win: Reported Failure - Lunar Utero
Dark Horse: Isabel - I Love You (And You Too)
When in doubt double dip with Song of the Year and Record of the Year. Reported Failure, however, have proved to be the foremost rock songwriters this year, and with a crossover hit like Lunar Utero they should be rewarded especially since songwriting is the key aspect for Song of the Year. Isabel could also pull off a victory if the pop-rock sympathizers decide she is more worthy than Armstrong, but with little buzz surrounding her since a year ago, it seems less likely.

UserPostedImage
Calling Captain | Pixie | 4U Girls
Ada | SYNCO

Best New Artist isn't a particularly difficult category this year. 4U Girls have made a name for themselves, but they haven't exactly made headlines. Calling Captain have been exciting for the pop-punk world, but have only made a ripple elsewhere. Who else is nominated? psycho? Oh no, I'm being told its SYNCO. Well there's your answer for that. Pixie and indie-princess Ada are clear frontrunners here.
Will Win: Pixie
Should Win: Pixie
Dark Horse: Ada
Pixie takes the cake! Ada has been fairly consequential this year but she can't compete with Pixie's pop-smashes and honestly, she shouldn't be able to. Pixie has been killing it this year. She'll win easily.

UserPostedImage
Reported Failure | Vile Hour | The Stat Nerds
SYNCO | Weekend

Best Band is essentially a three man race. The Stat Nerds? They released that one song that one time and it was ok. and, shit, there's SYNCO again. I guess its time to leave then... Reported Failure, Vile Hour, and Weekend, however have been at the forefront of music this past year. Weekend could have an advantage because they re pop and the other two artists are rock, but here is how we think it will go:
Will Win: Reported Failure
Should Win: Reported Failure
Dark Horse: Weekend
The fact is when we think of a band we think of a rock band. We think of The Beatles, or Led Zeppelin, or Queen. If you're of a young generation then you might think of Reported Failure. They have the most critically acclaimed and successful album of their career (which already includes a couple best band awards) out now. Vile Hour is young, and more of a duo than a band. Weekend has a serious shot as they have taken the music industry by storm in a short period of time, but the idea of a band as a rock band will keep Reported Failure in the top spot.

UserPostedImage
Isabel | Ada | Abie Lena
Weekend | Stephanie Fierce

Its a Girls World. Oh hey Weekend? I guess your name just fell between the cracks. This category is huge. On one end is Stephanie Fierce. Her name alone earns respect. Then we have Isabel; the once princess of pop is grown up and can now fight in the big leagues with the likes of Fierce. Then Abie Lena, the sensation of stripped down, basic pop songs creating new standards with every album she writes. All the other names are lucky to even be on this list.
Will Win: Isabel
Should Win: Isabel
Dark Horse: Abie Lena and Stephanie Fierce (Tie)
Isabel was huge with "Dancing in the Dark" and though it has been more than a year since its release and many months since the star was readily in the news, we haven't forgotten. Stephanie Fierce has been quiet and slow and relative to Isabel, she is older news. If she dropped an album of similar scope as Isabel's or Abie's then she would be a greater contender, but her name recognition absolutely is a factor to consider. Abie Lena not only had a major album in 2012 but she just had another major album released and her hype could potentially help her, but Isabel is more likely to win.

UserPostedImage
James Urie - Trying My Best Not To Forget (feat. Sara Daniels) | Aubrey Mikkel - Fire's Burning (feat. Isaac Lovelock) | Suzie - Dance With The Queen (feat. Dominic Brown)
Jacob Estrada - Don't Miss Out (feat. Isabel) | Luke Striker (feat. Deneil Khan) - On My Own

Best collaboration is often a difficult category to predict. Name recognition plays a big part, as does the success and quality of the song, and current hype over it. However, we can probably eliminate some singles. Suzie might get lots of support from c reepy middle aged men and their teenage sons, but that wont be enough. I dont remember who Sara Daniels is besides the girl who was on one James Urie song. Sorry, Doll. Here we go:
Will Win: Jacob Estrada - Don't Miss Out (feat. Isabel)
Should Win: Aubrey Mikkel - Fire's Burning (feat. Isaac Lovelock)
Dark Horse: Luke Striker (feat. Deneil Khan) - On My Own
Isabel on any track is a selling point, and on a halfway decent track from a strong artist is even better. Estrada probably will walk away with the award but its close. Aubrey Mikkel and Isaac Lovelock delivered one of the strongest collaborations in a long time, and they will give Estrada and Isabel trouble. Luke Striker also could win, but its less likely.

LOL, I could totally agree with you that Reported Failure or even Isabel deserves the awards, but calling my album EMO, that's just not fair!

OOC: These RPs are so freaking cool, I love when people write about predictions and stuffs like that, it makes the whole game look a lot more real, good Job ;)

OOC: Thanks. They're some of the most enjoyable RPs to do on here. I get to be a snarky asshole and no one gets mad.

Max: Emo has such a stigma attached to it. The entire aesthetic of the album coupled with the concept and lyics makes this an entirely appropriate term. That doesn't mean the album is automatically lesser than another album that couldn't be called emo. A good album is a good album no matter what genre it is labeled as.

It's been one hell of a year. The government may have shut down, but the music world flourished through it all. We may have forgotten for two months that anyone except Vanity existed, but looking back, the year was full of brilliant releases month after month. Rock had a huge year with new albums from James Urie and Julia Volova. Alex Simms, PURE and Calling Captain gave us promising debut albums. Then came the giant albums. Riot! in the Boulevard released the most uplifting youthful alternative album in years. In June Reported Failure released "Rome" an album that put the band on the same level as legends like Infinite and Mind. But rock didn't completely dominate this year. Vanity after all saw her album "The Sound of Living" top the charts for seven weeks in a row. Abie Lena and Glamazon both released different but equally brilliant pop albums. Girlspice came back and even collaborated with Blood of Wecz? Releases also came from Serenity Scott, Tisha Jackson, and Hey Lolita, as well as debuts from Maddie Urie, Aimee Christelle. No doubt a huge album this year, in November breakout artist Pixie released "Imagine" solidifying her place in the industry. The year, thus was a mix of youthful promise and more aged success as artists old and new equally dominated the radio. Here at Max-Volume we've gone back and compiled a list of the top 40 albums of the year. Lets go back and take a look and celebrate the beautiful year we've had.

OOC: Fist a big thank you to C4AJoh for helping write some of the album descriptions. After that thank you to everyone who voted in the polls. Here are the results! Lastly thanks to everyone who helped make TRSG a nice, lively online community to be a part of this year. I'm not usually consistently active for the whole year so doing this was a nice way to look at all the work everyone did that I may have missed. I must say all of you are superb and there are some great people here. Thanks.

The challenge that Reported Failure faced in following up "Darkness" was enough to bury even the most talented acts in the music industry. But Reported Failure met the challenge; They dominated the singles chart once more, four number ones came ‘Days Spent In The Dark’, ‘Lunar Utero’ 'Land and Sea' and ‘Frosted Peaks’ and the record became another dominant release from a band that continues to raise the bar, six years after breaking into the music industry. Billie Beckett has led Reported Failure into becoming a dominant force within the music industry, the question is, where do they possibly go from here? Having already written two iconic rock albums we can only hope that it is just like Beckett says on the title track to "Rome": "I will build a brand new day!" - J.M.

On “Cold Hearts And Broken Memories” the fifteenth track on Riot! in the Boulevard's "Wild Young Things" Amy Meyer softly ponders her future questioning "I just wanna know/Will I go down in flames/Or will I go down in history". With an album that found its way in to the hearts of the young those who are young at heart, Riot! in the Boulevard captivated us all this year. Gleefully riding thew line between rock and pop, the band's singles were inescapable and their power irreplaceable. Now reformed in to a trio, R!OT, the three remaining members will certainly go on to new places in their wild and young career. The band may burn their bridges and move apart. But in 2013 five misfit kids from Vegas made us all believe that we could make history. - M.P.

We were expecting something great from Abie Lena. But we never knew the Brazilian beauty would take us on the type of journey that is "The End Starts Now". From the first lines of the dark "Dead for a reason" to the last note of the beautiful "Say a pray", Lena's jazz and pop meets classical and even dance elements on what is absolutely a career highlight. We feel every pain that she expresses. "Let me taste your pity in my lips/Let me hear your contempt in my ears" she declares on "You make me die". we want whoever is hurting her to stop and for it to be over, but all the while we can't turn away, and as long as Lena keeps making music we probably never will. - C.H.

No new artist had bigger hype this year than Pixie. Almost as soon as she appeared she was the talk of the entire scene. With "Imagine" Pixie scored the biggest debut album of the year. There is a song on this album for each occasion. Pixie is able to capture everything from the subtlety of emotion in waking up in the morning and facing the day, to the energy of a party and a dancefloor, to the cool quiet of late nights and the joy of love. Few albums were played more, loved more, or sung as loudly. Even if Pixie walks alone, we were with her singing in our cars, dnacing at clubs, and laughing loving and relaxing in our homes. - M.P.

"Loving me is the new black, the new fashion" declares Glamazon on the third track of "Riot Grrrl". Glamazon is a veteran. Her image is huge. Her songs are huge. Whenever she does something it is huge. What makes "Riot Grrrl" so great though isn't even that it is from a huge artist and has huge hits and huge production. The album is raw as fuck. The album plays like a dark industrial pop diary entry. The woman behind it is powerful and mean, but behind the rough exterior of the songs she is sensitive and almost loving. Glamazon may certainly be the new black, but with an album like "Riot Grrrl" the different shades of her might just make her last much longer than a new fashion. - M.P.

The new black: Glamazon

On her sohpomore album, pop rock singer Jennifer Armstrong didn't hold anything back. With sleek production from the likes of Gia Rose Hilton and Sunny Monroe, not to mention resonating songwriting, Armstrong and company scored the year's first huge album. With a full scope of emotion Armstrong was the girl who taught us "Its okay to not be okay" - C.H.

"I'm walking on, not looking back to yesterday" declares Vanity on "Come Alive". After one of the darkest periods of her life, we understand why the pop queen wants to walk on and not look to yesterday. With "The Sound of Living" Vanity created an incredibly powerful album. Every song resonates. Its no wonder she topped the charts for seven weeks in a row with the year's most uplifting pop album. - M.P.

The sophomore album from indie pop duo Jared Nevo and Arianna Harley AKA Hey Lolita is a quiet intimate and passionate gem of an album. When Harley sings "you know how to get this little angel past the gates of hell" on "Sick Tragedy" it essentially sets the tone for an incredibly seductive and sexy album that at times should be labeled NSFW. But beyond the sensual lyrics, the production holds the album together for what is one of the years more provocative albums. - M.P.

UserPostedImage
The biggest new thing in indie rock this year was undeniably the new band from ex-Misery Loves Company frontman Ryan Williams. "Weekend Lovers" is a ten track dream of love sex and drugs. Gotta love rock and roll. But the four highschool buddies styay captivating all the way so when Williams says "she doesn’t care about the future, it’s so cool" on "LOVE//LIES" we all hink its cool too. - M.P.

Ryan Ross Hernandez is the kind of man who could be photographed brushing his teeth and it would make the news whether he used Crest of Colgate and whether he brushed for two minutes or one. But on "Traveling Tales" we are able to forget every headline we've ever read about the rockstar. We just listen to his voice and guitar and we can tell as we let the world fade away that Ryan Ross Hernandez was probably doing the same thing when he wrote it. - C.H.

UserPostedImage
Most Alt Rock/Post-Hardcore acts tend to go in with a band behind them searching for the classic rock and roll dream. A breakout artist this year, Alex Simms, does it alone, and hell did it pay off. With the powerful emotion of Reported Failure and youth of Riot! in the Boulevard, Alex Simms has the making of a rock superstar. So when Simms says "And destruction is her middle name/Setting fire to my things/Now she’s got me joining in" on "Going Down Together" he is probably right. - C.H.

UserPostedImage
"Goodbye to those past times!/Opportunities came knocking at my door" says James Urie on "Farwell". Having battled with depression and shaking his image, "The Recovery" marks a new beginning for Urie. Filled with sleek production solid vocals and addictive lyrics, the album is easily one of the top rock releases of the year and Urie's best album to date. - M.P.

One of the most iconic pop groups meets one of the most iconic metal bands on "Soul to Sell", track eight of Grilspice's "Make a Scene". What could possibly go wrong? Well, evidently, nothing. The song isn't metal by any means. But it isn't pop either. With "Make a Scene" Nadia, Kimberly, Sophia and Chantal make an album that is full of surprises. - M.P.

Julia Volkova is everything we want in a rockstar. She's mysterious. She's rebellious. She's creative. she's sexy. In 2013 she was the biggest female solo rocker, and "Haunted" was one of the biggest rock albums of the year. With big collaborations from James Urie, Vin Peters, and Abie Lena, not to mention a killer concept, on "Haunted" Volkova solidified her place in the rock scene. - C.H.

Hip-hop was quiet for most of 2013. But later in the year things started to pick up for the genre, and Rum & Coke are highly responsible. "Epiphany" is the most powerful piece of RnB/Hip-Hop/Rap to come to mainstream audiences in years. The duo came seemingly out of nowhere but with one of the year's biggest debut albums there is no doubt they will bring us something even bigger next year. - C.H.
