Simple question... Should pop, rock. rap, whatever stars preach to us about politics... Use their position to forward things they care about? is it all a cynical ploy to gain a greater following... Look at Bob geldof for example, The boomtown rats only had two good songs!!
Should a musician stick to music? What about Bands that combine the two in their lyrics? Is this a good or a bad thing? After all a lot of people like bands without really taking into consideration what the Lyrics are actually saying. |
I hate it when people see me at the supermarket and they are like: Hey, what are you doing here? and im just like: Oh you know, hunting elephants |

"When The President Talks To God" by Bright Eyes would also be a good example for that list, and personally I believe it plays an important role in artistic license and freedom of speech. It *can* be slightly less redundant of a concept compared to a lot of other things, but I don't think most who sing about it do so to hope on some sort of anti-governmental bandwagon. |

Depends. I'm all for music with some kind of concept, but I think slaving music to some semi-anarchist viewpoint often results in boring punk music. And when it comes to rich rockstars trying to preach their politics, who the fuck are they to tell us how to live? Eh Bono? |

I think Politics & Music should mix, for example what would Bob Dylan be like without being political, and American Idiot was a massive album in terms of sales and reception and that was a political album. The Rising By Bruce Springsteen is pretty political too. |

I say, why sing about it, when there's no point? It's not music that has the power to change what is already 300+ years in the making.....

It may not change the world, but it can change people. That was powerful. Also, I think it should definatly be mixed. If you have the fame to do it, definatly. People criticise Bono, because he lives in a lovely house and probebly uses up more emmisions than this forum put together, but at least he's spreading the message. Hypocritically, yes, but if you were that rich, I doubt you would do what he does. Although it's not musical, look at Joanna Lumly, look what she did for the Gurkha's? She brought it into the public spotlight and showed everyone what scum the government is. Anyway, yes, I think song's about polotics are importent to. If we lived in a society where no one ever mentioned polotics in comedy, music, entertainment whatever, a lot of polotics wouldnt sink through to the wider world and people who aren't verly clued up on the subject wouldn't get a lot of thing's, and comedy and music would'nt be the same. |

Sing about whatever the fuck you want, whether it be the destruction of multi-nationals or the destruction of taxes or to kick the fuck out of that cheating bastard.
Y'know, the lyrics ultimately have little effect on my overall enjoyment of the music. I mean if the lyrics are clever and the politics agree with me then ace, that's always cool and probably like Anti-Flag partially for that reason, but at the end of the day, I listen to Burzum, and he's a vile murdering a racist so fuck it. |

Well I think they can do whatever they want with their music and lyrics, if they prefer singing about actual issues than just going to a strip club thats great for me |

Varg's a twat, but at least he's the real deal I guess :L I mean you get a lot of bands like that who go and sing about stuff, but this guy's genuinly fucked up. It's great for listening to, it add's a kinda creepy air to it, but still he is one crazy motherfucker. |

For all you know, the people music changes could altogether be just as useless in an effort to change anything else, therefore bringing me back to my previous post.

So better to have made an attempt and failed than sat there going "dude, the world sucks." "True, but nothing we do will change it." |

Funny to see the idealistic Cam come out in defiance of cynical apathy. |

Well yes, it's shocking to see an idealist defend an idealist viewpoint, innit? |

There's a very fine line, and on one side you're an utterly pessimistic well of despair, and on the other you're some kind of vigilante hurling molotovs through the windows of injustice. |

Do you think people should rap about Politics rather than just sing about it?

stephaniewazhere wrote:Do you think people should rap about Politics rather than just sing about it? It doesn't matter what genre you play, if you want to sing about politics, you have my sympathy :) Just take a look at The (International) Noise Conspiracy, they play poppy music but have Marxist/Anarchist lyrics.

Sure why not. Music can be a strong voice. Maybe it wont help, but it can sure influence people in making choices.
"Let's Impeach The President"
Let's impeach the President for lying And misleading our country into war Abusing all the power that we gave him And shipping all our money out the door
Who's the man who hired all the criminals The White House shadows who hide behind closed doors They bend the facts to fit with their new stories Of why we have to send our men to war
Let's impeach the President for spying On citizens inside their own homes Breaking every law in the country By tapping our computers and telephones
What if Al Qaeda blew up the levees Would New Orleans have been safer that way Sheltered by our government's protection Or was someone just not home that day?
Flip - Flop Flip - Flop Flip - Flop Flip - Flop
Let's impeach the president for hijacking Our religion and using it to get elected Dividing our country into colors And still leaving black people neglected
Thank god he's cracking down on steroids Since he sold his old baseball team There's lots of people looking at big trouble But of course our president is clean.
Thank God
