Track: Born Free Genre: Hip Hop, R&B, Alternative Rap Songwriters: Chloe Smith
2013 has already started out as a great year for music. Many new faces have sprung up on the scene, possibly changing the way things go on within the industry. The once tight nit music industry has now opened arms to all types of genre's of music to bask in mainstream fans and possibly garner as many fans as the biggest pop star on the planet whether they are an experimental genius or an indie phenomenon. This has it's ups and downs as becoming a mainstream act has become extremely simple to tackle possibly destroying certain genre's that are loved within the underground community. Aside from those politics, 2013 has also seen some of the great ones go on excavate themselves from obscurity and splash onto the charts as if they never left, once again showing why they are exactly a great one. This has also seemed to happen within the first four months of the new year and many are happy to say that with all the genre's of music floating around the charts, and other music outlets like PicturePerfect opening doors for new faces, the current industry is looking upwards in terms of new faces, genre's and diversity.
Since we are speaking of genre's, one act who seemed to float through all types of genre's throughout her career was rapper and singer Chloe. Does it ring a bell? We'd hope so. Chloe emerged on the scene three years ago as the versatile damsel that seemed to swim through all types of genre's so easily that it'd almost become shocking to a listener. This was showcased in her debut album "Elements Of Chloe" released in January of 2013. Whether it was her showing off her less than expected Caribbean feel with her debut single and Dancehall inspired "Cupids Twin" that reached the top three position on the radio charts, the indie smash "He's Gonna Cry", another hit single of hers in "Tales From The Crazy Mouth" showing off her fiery rap skills or her massive pop single W.T.F (feat. Missy Vanity). These releases certified Chloe as a force to be reckon with, within music and continued her dominance when winning best new artist at the IMA's the same year. Seems like things would only go up for the London born star.
Following the success of her debut album, Chloe went back into the studio to work on her new album that was supposed to be named "The Saga Continues..." for some reason after a barrage of successful singles (24 hrs, Liberation, and Never Gonna Dance Again) with the first two topping the charts, the album was pushed back multiple times and even renamed, Chloe then seemed to step away from music without officially announcing it as questions started to arise from not only industry figures, other celebrities and more importantly Chloe's die hard fans questioning wondering about Chloe's whereabouts until she finally broke her silence at an appearance during the latest Chaos Awards late last year. "I really just felt disconnected with my music, with music in general. I guess I feel like it was an internal thing that I needed to deal with. I wasn't happy with the album to be very honest, maybe because I wasn't as inspired as I should have been, I just wanted to be free. Not deal with any stress, I wasn't happy, I felt so controlled, so forced ...and it actually came to a point where I wanted to quit...that's not anyone's fault, just things in my past and even present began to really bother me. But I had to realized that I cannot let myself..or my fans down. We have worked too hard to get where we are today, and once I really thought about my fans I couldn't let what I love go, and that's creating music for them. It was scary, I thought I was never going to be inspired again, I trashed most of the album to create new songs .. that I wasn't inspired to write and record.....but then it all just came to me. The hunger, the inspiration all came back...I am very excited for everything I have in store for my supporters. I haven't felt this excited in a while so I am ready to finally release some new music and have the album out. Cannot wait." Weeks pass and the suppose-to be-single "Never Meant To Last" was then switched to another single in "Born Free", the album's title as well. Her fans still waited for this official single release and finally we get it today. What will Chloe offer this time? Will it be pop, rock, r&B? It seems like Chloe has been watching closely to her fans wishes as she gets straight to her Urban roots in this comeback single. Something we haven't seen her do since 2011.
Born Free is Chloe's newest single taken off of her second album "Born Free" that is set to hit stores this summer, with the single being released this Sunday. The track starts off with quit keyboard notes that lightly move along a non existent beat for about 10 seconds, after these 10 seconds a eerie backing beat slowly arises backing up these notes, the backing beat is mid-to slowly tempo-ed. Along with the backing beat, Chloe is heard. Her voice sounds eerie and haunting just as the beat as she murmurs out: Cause I was born free, yeah living life for me |Yeah I'm born free, just tryna be me|I was born free, can't steal my dignity |I was born free, I'm born free. Automatically following her words, the beat picks up since a bit showing this heavily influenced Hip Hop backing along with the constant background keyboard notes. Chloe automatically gets to business with her razor sharp lyrics once again reminding us listeners of her unique flow as she aggressively begins to rap the beginning lyrics of the song where Chloe opens up about her childhood. Once upon a time in England|I was a little girl born with a sweet voice singing|Saying all I ever wanted was to sing a song|And have a crowd full of people that sing along|; The slow, but aggressive beat stays at it's same pace as Chloe continues: But now I feel like a slave, as I rattle in this cage |Trying to get these shackles off me; I'm going in a rage|Ain't nobody phased, when my problems are enormous Once you play the devils game, your either dead or performing; Chloe sings those lines with massive aggression, as it seems like she's forcing the words as she raps truthfully about feeling controlled using similes and comparing herself to a slave as she rattles in a cage and even states a controversial line in "Once you play the devil's game, you're either dead or performing" which may come across as being massively truthful or maybe even scary. Chloe continues on with her moving lyrics as she continues to open up with her fiery, but slowed down rap flow. Waiting on the world to change| Without working on mine I'm changing my mind |And I'm deciding it's time, to stop being the blind| And lift the passion, my discretion| Whether I sing or I rhyme. The beat seems to be building up and bursts onto the chorus following her last line of the first verse, where synths join the lightly pounding beats of this hip hop ballad and piano notes where Chloe proclaims her right to self freedom with her catchy words, making it a easily "stuck in your brain" chorus. She aggressively murmers: Cause I was born free, yeah living life for me |Yeah I'm born free, just tryna be me |I was born free, can't steal my dignity |I was born free, I'm born free|Cause I was born free, yeah living life for me|Yeah I'm born free, no you can't forget me | I was born free, can't steal my dignity | I was born free, I'm born free;. Chloe's voices matches perfectly with the sound of the record as it does with each type of song she sings to but the connection, aggression and emotion she holds in this record is one to remember.
As the chorus fades out, the beat lightens up where once again you can hear the piano notes more predominately as Chloe continues to open up with more personal lyrics. It's like I've been in a coma| On life support to survive |Because I've been feeding and breathing |Not really being alive| Started seeking for meaning, and leading me to a time | To realize that no motherf*cker gonna control my life. Still, Chloe holds this aggressiveness to her voice forcing the words of the last line she spoke as the backing beat and piano backs her. Chloe continues to sing the next lines: And now I want to show that I've got more to offer this world| I can't blow that by doing what I've done in the past|I must own that, and get off the slow track |I've gripped with the fact that|I was afraid of myself, I had no love for myself |I tried to kill, I tried to hide, I tried to run from myself |There was a point in my life where I didn't like who I was |So they tried to create who they wanted me to become. These lines that Chloe verbalizes is probably the most personal of the record as she opens up about past personal issues, where she felt controlled, her personal dislike of herself and even her attempt at killing herself and luckily Chloe is speaking in past tense but still hits the weak spot for all her listeners as for the first time that the often smiling and perky Chloe was not always that way. Right away, the hook emerges as she easily flows through it and the ever catchy chorus then emerges with the beat becoming stronger just as before. Following the chorus, the bridge emerges with the beat relaxing and lightening up even more, lighter than the actual verse backing beat with with the blazing synths lightly ringing over the continuous piano notes as Chloe gives herself, and her listeners words of encouragement: Another state of mind, seeking more glory to bask in|Never let a person control the way you’re acting | Never let a person over take you’re life |Always remember that you’ll be the one to reach the heights | You’ll do all yourself; you don’t need help from no one From no one.|; Following this, the final chorus breaks out, with the beat becoming apart of the song again and Chloe aggressively verbalizes the final chorus strongly until the song comes to an eerie finish. Where she says : I am on a mission. As this song comes to an end with the piano fading away.
Chloe stays away from an over produced record that so often distracts listeners from the actual artist and lyrics. Chloe makes it obvious that she wants her listeners take in her fiery deliverance of deep, personal, relate-able and empowering lyrics that still stays massively catchy with her official new single in "Born Free" that hits stores and radio tomorrow. Chloe is back! Do you agree? Let us know!
