Edward Barát (born March 5, 1990) is an American singer-songwriter from Hollywood, California. Born and raised in California it was evident from a young age that Edward was destined to become a performer of sorts and his parents noticed his flamboyancy and eagerness to entertain which then manifested in a young Edward being placed in various classes in order to channel his additional energy’s. As the years increased and the youngster started to grow older he began to show an interest in music, most notably musical theatre and took part in pretty much every school production opportunity that came his way.
At the age of 20 he put all of his focus on finally making a career in the entertainment industry but that one defining big break has yet to come, a number of performances in musical productions and work as a session musician in which he lent his vocal ability’s is as close to achieving his dream as he has been able to get.
In April 2012 he took part on the new music talent show, Star Factory and hopes that this could be the springboard for his career to take off. Sadly, just a week later for unknown reasons Edward could not make the next week of the competition and was voted off the competition. Barát re-emerged in July of 2013 where he attended the 2013 GOLDIES where he confirmed that he was working on his debut full length studio album. Just a day later, he was announced that Edward had come to terms on a two album deal with record label Songs To Live And Die By.
EARLY LIFE (1990 – 2007)Edward Barát was born in Hollywood, California on March 5, 1990 to parents Nicole and Zach. His parents were 24 years old when he was born, His mother worked in a bar and his father was a struggling musician whose dream never really worked out, his father then became a stage assistant at a local concert hall in order to create a stable family environment for their family. He has two younger sisters, Eliza (18) and Beth (16) and maintains a relatively close relationship with his family.
A highly energetic child it was clear that he was destined to become a performer, his parents decided to channel the energy and enrolled him in performing schools within the local area which included choir and drama classes, although he preferred the drama classes initially it later became obvious that the choir classes had quite an effect on him and at around the age of 8 years old it was clear that he was developing into a rather talented young singer, being brought up around music and the choir classes had moulded the youngsters voice and the combination of drama and music seemed perfect for Edward. He was considered a highly talented youngster and was watched by many talent agencies from around the US and at the age of 14 he had already performed in a large number of musical productions around California and several other neighbouring states. He was extremely comfortable onstage and nerves or shyness never became an issue for him in the intervening years.
In high school, things became slightly different in his life, the flamboyant and energetic nature that used to make fellow classmates fascinated quickly disappeared as he started high school and instead his personality was considered weird and extremely uncool, the change in perception was difficult for him as he went from being the entertaining kid that everybody wanted to be friends with to becoming the weird kid that everybody tried to avoid, he wasn’t put off by this and although he never had any friends during the early years of high school he remained the same energetically natured young boy that he was. At 16 years old he was part of the high school drama class and even then he was still considered an odd individual that the majority of people avoided for the most parts, but things changed as he was cast alongside one of the more popular girls in school, the two had a duet which left the watching students amazed and the weird teenager became very popular. After high school ended, Edward went straight to New York as he was cast in Les Miserables.
CAREER ATTEMPTS (2008 – 2011)He spent over a year in New York as he performed continually in Les Miserables and was considered a huge success, although he started to yearn for something that challenged him more, he knew that the opportunity that he was given to perform almost every night was huge but he wanted something a little more challenging for himself, knowing fully that he wanted to try to move away from musicals and push further in music as a legitimate artist, that was always what he was looking for but the opportunities weren’t coming in for him as a musician and instead the opportunities were all seemingly for theatre work, plays and musicals primarily which he continued to take on in the hope that they would lead into something better. After finally growing tired of the theatre work and performing in a number of high profile musicals including, We Will Rock You, Wicked, The Lion King and more he made a decision to reject any theatre work that came his way and focus entirely on beginning his music career, many auditions for record labels followed and various CD’s were sent out to labels worldwide but nothing seemed to be happening and the offers that were made to him seemed to want to change him into an artist that he didn’t want to become. He rejected a number of record deals from labels that wanted to change and compromise who he was and with that sacrifice he accepted that he was going to have to find something to bring in money regularly which is where he began work as a session musician.
The money was consistent which is what was needed at the time but singing songs that he didn’t write was always a frustration for him, but he continued to work hard as a session musician and start to work towards finding opportunities to finally begin his career as a legitimate artist.
STAR FACTORY (2012)His best opportunity arose in April 2012 as he auditioned for a new talent show called, Star Factory. He was put through to the live shows in front of the five judges and hopes that this can be the springboard for his career to finally take off. In the first week of the show, he performed 'Closer To The Edge' by 30 Seconds To Mars and was chosen by Brittany Knox as his mentor as he progressed onto the next round of the competition. In the second week of the competition Edward sang 'Me Against The World' by Brittany Knox and received a very positive reaction to his performance, most notably his vocal ability, stage presence and uniqueness. In the third week of the competition Edward sang two ballads, 'Iris' by Goo Goo Dolls and 'I Don't Want To Miss A Thing' by Aerosmith, he was praised for his performance and came fourth in the public vote which took him into week four of the competition. Sadly, just a week later for unknown reasons Edward could not make the next week of the competition and was voted off the competition.
NEW BEGINNINGS(2013 – present)Barát re-emerged in July of 2013 where he attended the 2013 GOLDIES where he confirmed that he was working on his debut full length studio album. Just a day later, it was announced that Edward had come to terms on a two album deal with record label Songs To Live And Die By.
