FESTIVE CHEER: RILEY BRINGS THE STARS TO LIGHT UP HOMETOWNPOP ICON BRINGS CELEB PALS TO GRAND OPENING OF BEESTON HOMELESS & COMMUNITY CENTRE[Hamilton's bandmate Dustyn Blue-Conners and showbiz buddies Jack Dunn & Mercedes Payne rolled up their sleeves for the community.]It certainly is the season of goodwill as far as Weekend heartthrob Riley Hamilton is concerned. The 30-year-old star spread joy with abundant glee on Friday with a star-studded line-up in tow as he officially opened his "community hub" in his hometown of Beeston, Leeds just in time for Christmas. The suburb's most famous export returned to his roots for an evening of camaraderie and community spirit, formally launching the Beeston Community Hub - a project that has been in the making between Hamilton and several local charities for the best part of two years. The Hub aims to tackle Leeds' alarming rising rate of homelessness, providing food and shelter for those in need. The building also offers numerous other services and classes to the community, ranging from sexual health clinics, to cookery workshops, to wash facilities. Spearheaded and co-funded by Riley, and run by committed, impassioned volunteers, the Beeston Community Hub is aiming to be the first step towards the regeneration and revitalisation of what is unfortunately classed as one of the UK's most deprived areas. Riley Hamilton wrote:"This has been something that I've wanted to do for the longest time. In fact, forget about "wanting" anything, this NEEDED doing and it has been a long time coming. It's dismal that that responsibility has fallen on others as opposed to the governing bodies. Beeston has, in my entire 30 years on the earth, been on the most deprived areas in this country. You Google the place and the most shocking articles and statistics crop up. From crime, to underfunding, to homelessness, it's not exactly a poster for the British Tourist Board. All that in itself is absolutely shocking but when it's your home, it cuts deeper. When you know the people, what your community is capable of, its true heart and warmth, and you know how much better they deserve, it's incredibly soul-crushing to see it deteriorate and nobody intervene. I'm hoping this is a step in the right direction."
"Our centre is for absolutely everyone in the community and surrounding areas. We have a multitude of facilities and services, and will hopefully continue to expand. At the core of it, though, is the homelessness issue. It's reaching frightening figures and although we can't solve it overnight, we at The Hub hope that this can help alleviate this epidemic and give some families a little bit more security and peace of mind, especially at this time of year. Since news got out about our launch and the services we'll be providing, we've already had over 650 families sign up for our food parcel delivery service. That number continues to rise daily. It's heart-breaking."
"I'm so grateful that the press are here to raise awareness and start a conversation but I want to make it clear that this isn't about me, it's not about the people I've brought along. This is about Beeston. This is about Leeds. This is about the atrocities being carried out towards the working class folk in this country in this day and age. Our Beeston Community Hub isn't going to solve every problem. It shouldn't actually need to exist but here we are. We're looking out for each other, we're pulling one another up, and we're sending a message that this mistreatment and neglect is not ok." Rather than following the typical, play-by-play celebrity appearance model by showing his face, giving a quick speech then heading back off to his London townhouse, Hamilton showcased his true passion and belief in the project and his hometown, spending the entire weekend at the centre. From meeting the locals, to dishing up free meals from the canteen, the Weekend star rolled up his sleeves and played his part. The local hero wasn't alone, however. Also making appearances were Hamilton's long-time friend and bandmate, Dustyn Blue-Conners, and everyone's favourite all-round entertainer, Mercedes. Jack Dunn, rising indie star and close friend of Hamilton, also stayed the duration of the weekend, lending a hand and bringing in more pulling power to an already astronomically successful launch. [One of many derelict, unsafe streets. The area of Beeston has seen brighter days.]On top of mucking in with the local community, the stars also did what they did best and provided sporadic entertainment over the course of the weekend, all free of charge. The Saturday night culminated in a surprise, short yet stunning three-song acoustic set from Hamilton and Blue-Conners. The residents were treated to a rare duo-incarnation of Weekend as the two band mates touchingly performed stripped down versions of some of the group's hits. The performance was kept swift, under wraps and showcased after midnight to avoid unsafe crowd numbers. Avid 'Weekenders' instead had to live vicariously through videos posted over social media. The posts have since gone on to receive widespread praise with many commenters lauding the charitable actions of the stars, as well as the impeccable vocal performances and often overlooked combination of Hamilton and Blue-Conners together. The Weekend boys weren't the only ones to pull a fantastic, heartstring-tugging performance out of the bag. Industry newcomer and one of this year's breakout stars, Jack Dunn, briefly stepped away from peeling potatoes in order to treat attendants to a small acoustic set. The fellow Northerner took things one step further, penning and showcasing an original song in aid and honour of the situation. Think an eye-watering charity Christmas song but with a Jack Dunn twist. Sharp, no punches pulled, poignant to an unfathomable degree. The Newcastle sensation announced plans to officially release the track over the festive period. After his stellar performance, we managed to pull Dunn aside very briefly to ask him about his thoughts and involvement in the remarkable event. [Best Buds: Riley & Jack have formed a close, endearing friendship over the last year]Jack Dunn wrote:"I'm proud of what Riley's been able to achieve here. If you look at this country from a big picture position, it's so fucking easy to get yourself down, to be scared of what's coming next and what the future holds for yourself and your family. But I've found solace in the way smaller communities have been rallying around each other these past couple of years, almost at the expense of what's going on in larger scale government. Today is one of those moments where there's a positive story of a community coming together, led by Riley but with a lot of local helping hands offering their time to help those most in need in their community. I might not be from this area, but just spending a couple of days here alongside Riley, helping out wherever I can has made me realise that although I'm not from around here, it's very familiar to me.
It reminds me of where I'm from, the people, their courage and their strength to work together to help each other out in juxtaposition to their government that's supposed to do that very thing, happily sitting back on their arses and letting these areas be forgotten about. As I said, I might not be from here but if there's a way I can lend a helping hand, I hope that you'll have me. I know he'll not ask for praise, but I'm proud of my mate for creating this whole thing and never forgetting where he's from and what really matters in this world. Let's hope those in power with the ability to affect change see what's happening here today and realise what's important too. Well done Riley lad, proud of you mate!" Mercedes was also there. We aren't sure what she was doing but her presence was greatly appreciated. The newly launched Beeston Community Hub remains opened to the public 24/7, including this coming Christmas and New Year. Hamilton has stated that he plans on visiting and volunteering whenever he can, becoming directly involved as much as his bust schedule allows. The centre does not currently offer any child day care facilities due to an ongoing legal process with Ofsted but is being treated as "top priority" by Riley and his fellow volunteers. |
