Go go go. Oh my god. That's possibly THE weirdest thing that's ever happened to me. Okay, so I wasn't using Gildermershina's technique of song searching but I am listening to Boys Don't Cry RIGHT this instant :P Win ;3 I liked The Cure a fair bit before, but I've gotten into a fair bit more music this week which is a lot different to what I normally spin, and because of it, they've become one of my top few bands. I'm listening to a lot of chilled and older shit at the moment, and they're pretty damn perfect for it. Robert Smith is a genius songwriter! |

That way I found out about KISS, JUDAS PRIEST, SAXON, ASIA, JOURNEY, STYX etc. etc.

Robert Smith is a genius end of :P And I've got a little bit of a tie to him in fact. My dad's work mate once went to do his flooring in his house, and apparently he looked completely normal with his hair in a pony tail and tanned skin and apparently a really cheerful person :L Although, my dad was pretty pissed when he told me, but I doubt he'd lie :P As well as that my dad's friend *different one this time* saved Jools Holland from being crushed by a falling plan of wood on the way to a concert as there was scaffolding works going on, and then all he said was cheers. But then, my dad also told me a little fat man gave me my presents at christmas. |

You should get Staring at the Sea, it's amazing, and also Mixed Up, Pornography, Faith and Disentegration, and the rest of the Cure's catalogue, except for that 96 record (cant remember the name) which kind of sucked, and the last one it was 413 Dream or something it also sucked. |

Remember the times, before the interwebs, when labels had dists they sent through the mail? For every order you placed you had to give some alternatives, in case the CD/tape/LP you wanted was out of stock. Good times, good times.

My mate Phil still uses those distro mags actually. He doesn't want to get a phoneline installed just to use the internet.
Weirdo. |

Weirdo. Hahaha, now THAT is oldfashioned. None of the distros I've ordered from in the last six years or so sitll have them. Displeased Records (Dutch underground metal distro) did have them until... err... 2004 or 2005 I believe.

forkboy wrote:What he does is finds a band. We'll say for example: Godspeed You! Black Emperor. And then he'll look for projects by members of that band. Which gets him to A Silver Mount Zion and Fly Pan Am. Then he'll look to bands on the same record label and find stuff such as Do Make Say Think, and then he'll go off from one of those again, endlessly finding interesting tunes.
Which, it has to be said, is alot easier to do nowadays than it was 20 years ago. Well yes, that is exactly my method. Occasionally I come by a band out of the blue, but most of the time, it's by association to a band I like, a label I trust, a reviewer with similar taste. There's basically always list of bands and artists I'm going to get round to someday, but because I don't download stuff, they sit there waiting for me to stumble across the CD in a store and finally take that plunge. I guess the last artist I did that with was the composer Steve Reich. |

I've downloaded Godspeed You! Black Emperors "Raise Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven", "Born Into Trouble As The Sparks Fly Upwards" by Thee Silver Mt. Zion and two other tracks by Thee Silver Mt. Zion called God Bless Our Dead Marines and 1,000,000 Died To Make This Sound and there all amazing so far :) I haven't had the time to listen to GY!BE, but I had a little snippet of Storm which is amazing.
Thank you, for opening my eyes :P |

Zions, "Could've Moved Mountains" is probably my favourite song of theirs, or at least up there with There's a River in the Valley Made of Melting Snow. |

I recommend Emmure to people who like deathcore. |

I didn't download it illegally, I got it from Emusic which is basically just Itunes by my aunt bought me a giftcard for it so I thought I may as well use it on this. Plus I'd have no clue where to look if I wanted to actually buy the physical form, the music stores around my town are awful. And yeah "Could've Moved Mountains" is great but I personally prefer "The Triumph of Our Tired Eyes" and "Tho You Are Gone I Still Often Walk With You". It's funny actually, I usually can't stand really long songs but that Godspeed You album I've just say with my headphones plugged to my head for the entire 80+ minutes. It's just amazing, miles away from what I liked a year ago when I started on the forum. It's so much more in depth and meaningful I think, so I'm not so afraid of listening to the big songs because it actually carries some emotional meaning rather than just being a catchy tune. |

Captain Insano wrote:tension101 wrote:I recommend Emmure to people who like deathcore. I would imagine you would be recommending it to yourself then :D Indeed. 'Raise Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven' is such a beautiful album, Paul got me it for my birthday back in 2005 and it made a huge impact on me, totally opened my ears and mind up to a whole host of non-metal music. I mean I wouldn't like The Smiths or Joy Division now if not for hearing that GY!BE album (as backwards as that may seem chronologically). It really is a powerful record, the field recordings are fantastic and really add to the experience as well. What a bloody band. |

Well then I apologise for my assumption of evil piracy. Constellation Records would be the place to go for physical copies, and I certainly recommend Constellation's releases because they aren't shitty jewel cases, they're usually hand-designed cardstock cases, often with inserts. The CD of Born Into Trouble has a big fold out sheet with a long diatribe by vocalist Efrim Menuck, in his unique poetic style. Older constellation releases also have some interesting foil-embossing, die-cuts, all kinds of stuff. And when they send you a disc by mail order, they send a little thank you note. Being the collector that I am, I've saved all mine. Must have nearly ten of them by now, since I've amassed more than 30 of their releases (about half of what they've put out). Their vinyls are even more impressive, but I stick to the CDs. |
