The aesthetic really is quite unusual, because it takes the hard sci-fi route as far as technology and action and stuff, but the storytelling is more classical, and the design of ships and stuff is very clean and grandiose.

During the last battle scene I seem to remember some of the human ships looking a little more worn down or less grandiose (similar to the rebellion ships in Star Wars). The biggest draw to me with Mass Effect eventually became the Codex. I loved having that kind of universe be fully realized. I know how ships propel themselves, why the guns don't need ammo, and so forth.

Well yeah, there's variation, but the architecture, the Normandy, the Citadel, the various freighters, particularly on the interiors, are very clean I felt.

The background is really cool, and I'm one of those guys who, given the opportunity, would rather associate with the aliens than with humans just because they have interesting cultures. I was particularly fascinated by the Hanar and the Elcor and their hilarious speech patterns. I know they're not likely to be party members in ME2, but I hope there's at least a Hanar salesman on the ship next time.

Although the downside of all the cool alien culture stuff is that it pushed me back into my own great sci-fi world which has been building up in my mind for at least eight years, with nowhere for it all to go.

My favorite species was the Krogan because Wrex was so hilariously blunt. I also liked the idea of a species that is dying with no real hope for survival (except for one moment which I won't spoil). I loved the Hanar and Elcor speech patterns. I didn't come to really hate any of the races (except for the Batarians) but I did come to hate the council with one character and a stage of grudgingly accepting their positions and orders. That is something I always do in big RPGs like this. I don't just make decisions because I want a "good" character or a "bad" character, I make decisions because I have a personality that I want my character to have.

But I do understand your point about the clean feeling to the game.

Yeah, I find in RPGs, when I make my natural choice, it almost always ends up being the good path, because I feel too guilty with the evil option. Depends on the game, but it was the exact same with Knights of the Old Republic. I'm not really interested in seeing it from the evil perspective. When some petty criminal would be offering me a reward for not turning him in, I turned his ass in immediately. The cheek of trying to bribe me. Of course, there are hard choices later on, and I probably made my one questionable choice at one of them.
