Oh I just remembered, guess it's because I haven't been in school for 11 days, one of my best friends is from Virginia like me and talks with a texan accent or whatever the steryotypical accent is.His step dad is from a redneck area I guess and he picks up accents so easily he's starting to talk like the English kid in my school. |

Yeah, Yank English is horrific. I mean "mom" instead of "mum" or "mam" really does my fucking nut in far more than it rationally should. |

American English to me seems like British English, but lazy. Taken out letters (colour -> color, aluminium -> aluminum), avoided homophones with extra pronunciation (father and farther, form and fawm). However, I do love a good American accent, they're funny when they're too broad. When we went to the USA and my mum (mom?) ordered a coffee, the waitress looked at us like we were from some planet of retards and spoke to us VERY SLOWLY - "cawwwwwfee?" My sister and I were in stitches. Edited by user 16 February 2010 22:16:46(UTC)

Not your fault exactly, just for my own amusement, asking one American to account for the entire country's many idiosyncrasies, or rather, cultural differences that are made all the more apparent by how similar everything else is. It's the same language, but it's so different. We say "GAH-ruj", you say "Gu-RAJ". |

I honestly don't see how accents develop, I think it's from the immigrants who came to the states because the first Americans who already spoke English where the English. So being in the region wouldn't change the way we talk, my state was largely inhabited by Irish immigrants so I think the way they speak English influenced the accent from Virginia, then again southern Virginians (northern and Eastern Virginians distance themselves from them lol) talk with the stereotypical southern accent while Eastern Virginians talk like they're from New England which is basically a really nasally or light English accent mixed with a New York accent. IE Door=Doe-Wah and Peter or Father is still PETA or Fatha. |

(And I wanted to know first.) ;) I'm already not lol. But I do plan to live in Virginia at least until I go to college, it's one of those states where there's nothing to do, I mean everyone's already been to Washington DC like 20 times by the times they're 5 I've been there at least 200 times no exaggeration then again that's where the customers are ;) and where most Northern Virginians work.Though we are really close to a Six Flags amusement park but that's in Maryland.Music scene here sucks as well,DC and Southern Virgina are the only places to play hard rock/metal DC is where a lot of Hardcore started too, that's cool, I'm going to Boston for college so maybe there'll be more interesting shit there. My opinions on what has been said:
My favorite accents are german/russian/etc. because they are just so fun to hear people shout in, if you don't understand the language, everyone sounds angry :P
I don't appreciate all the bashing on the american accent because I think I have one, I have some wierd mix of a cuban and an american accent. I DO think, however, that we should switch to the metric system and that sales tax is stupid. I also think that the Republicans slamming on the healthcare bill is stupid. Their argument is that it will get us closer to socialism. True, but that doesn't make us fucking socialist!
I can't stand cockney accents |

Cockney accent's are horrendous. As for American accents, I've heard a few American's talk and have just wanted to smash them in the mouth or at least tell them to stop talking because it's utter torture to the ears. Sorry but the American accent is pitiful. |
