Hi, it's Katie Coyle

UserPostedImage

Katie Coyle

Katie Coyle is an 19 year old singer songwriter who is new on the block. Katie plays guitar and sings melodic songs with real emotion, and power, and has a new, bright and airy aura.

Born in June 1992, in Cleveland Ohio, to Irish parents, Katie has grown up around music, and musicians. In 1994, at the age of 2, Katie's parents moved from Cleveland to their native Dublin, Ireland, and lived for a while with Katie's uncle, musician and author Donald Williams. Katie said of her uncle, "Uncle Donald basically taught me all that I know. I grew up watching him play guitar in pubs around Dublin, and later, London, and he taught me how to play from around the age of 5."

At the age of only 9, the Coyle family would be on the move again, as Katie's father got a job as a banker in the city. Moving to London was a traumatic experience at first for the young lady, who had to quickly adapt to big city life. "It was really strange. All I really knew was the big, quiet house my uncle lived in in Dublin, and here we were in a little flat in the centre of London...I knew no one, or nothing, and it was like I always felt I'd get trampled on."

Since high school, Katie has been a keen performer in London, and has recently begun playing open mic nights in London bars (since she is finally old enough to get in). It was at one of these nights that she was to get a break that she had always hoped for. Producer Simon Frances saw Katie playing at the Black Bear bar in East London, and asked her to come to the studio, where they created an (as of yet unreleased) demo. Frances now acts as Katie's manager, as she attempts to find her feet in an industry that is waiting to chew her up and spit her out.

Quote:
It's a scary thought, but I'm putting myself out there, and I'm just looking to get people listening to my music. I love doing what I do, playing the guitar, and singing, and I just hope that other people will give me the time to prove what I can do. Not everyone will like what I do, and I'm ready to accept that, but I appreciate every second that people give to listen to my songs, and I hope to bring even a little bit of brightness to their day.

With the help of Simon, Im going into this with all I've got. I would love to get the chance to be who I am, and play the songs I've been singing to myself for years.

Katie: Hi Rakoon, nice to hear from another newcomer! I'd love to hear some of your stuff sometime.
I'm really nervous about moving into such an intensely competitive Market as this with the likes of Stacey Walton around, but yeah, I hope to be different enough that I'm relevant.

Rakoon: Oh that would be amazing. I'm very nervous as well. I'm not so focused on the market emphasis of things, but it's always hard to stay relevant in such an industry. Luckily my label is very supportive of great music. Hope the same goes for you. Wish you all the luck and success.

Katie Coyle interview @ Chaos Radio

Good afternoon people, and welcome to the evening show here at Chaos Radio with me, Larry Partridge, right through until midnight. That last song was "Blackout" by Reckoner, and our thanks to Danni with the drive time hour.
Now, here with me in the studio tonight, I have Katie Coyle, rather a new girl on the scene, how's it going Katie?

Hi, Larry, I'm feeling good thanks, how are you?

Yes, I'm not too bad Katie, so, tell us all a little bit about yourself, cos you're a bit of an unknown quantity to most people listening...

Oh, ummm, thanks(!) Nah, I'm just kidding...so, yeah, my name's Katie Coyle, I'm 18 and I come from London, originally Irish. I'm basically trying to get my name out there and see if I can break into the scene a little and let people hear my music.

Nice, yeah, so, tell me, what sorta stuff should we expect to hear from you? The demo comes out next week, am I right?

It does, it does....have you ever heard of a female solo artist doing like proper hardcore music before?

NO!

Me either, but it would sound totally awesome right? That would rock! haha, no, I just play what I feel at the time. What we've done with the demo, is to try and include all elements of what I can do, to show people how diverse I am, and also to give them an interesting insight into someone who doesn't just play the same stuff all the time. So, like, we have one song that's like a ballad style, it's quite slow, and it's properly heartfelt! The second track is more upbeat, and a little more acoustic, as well, think sort of, KT Tunstall-y, and you'll almost be there. And the last track is a bit of electro pop. I play guitar and keyboard in it, and it's really happy and cheery. I just hope people like what I'm doing, I'm not here to ram an image down anyone's throat, I just want people to hear what I love doing.

That's quite refreshing to hear! So who do you count as influences?

As I've said before, I absolutely adore Stacey Walton! She's a relative newcomer, like me, but she's achieved so much in such a short time, and she does what I want to be doing in the industry. I mean, I'm never going to be a Miss Vanity type girl. I respect what she does 1 million percent, but I dont have that sort of outlandish imagination for a show that she does.

And what do you hope to achieve from the release of the demo?

Well, I'm hoping that once it's out there, there will be at least one record label who will like it. It would be great to get picked up by a label, and I could make my dream come true, and release my debut album!

Aiming high then! haha...according to my researchers, you cut your teeth playing in pubs and clubs around London, and that's how your manager spotted you? What was that like for you?

Well, let me just say, that it's no place for a young lady to be! I've genuinely lost count of the number of times I've heard "Get your tits out love!" at half past midnight in some backwater London bar. It's a good job I'm so thick skinned, a lot of other girls would have lost the plot with them. But, it'll be worth the slog and the harassment if I manage to get myself a deal. And who knows,,,maybe someday I'll go back and play those places to go back to my roots!

And what's next for Katie Coyle?

I dunno! Once the demo is out, hopefully someone will take me on tour, or maybe I'll hit the studio again. One thing's for sure though, Im not gonna sit on my hands, it's time to grab this opportunity, and make stuff happen!

Alright! A bit of sass in the studio! Well Katie, thanks for coming in, it was lovely to talk to you, we'll be back, after this message!

Stacey: Joe was right, I do like you, not just because you think highly of me (ok maybe a little bit) but you seem like my kind of girl. We've probably bumped into each other considering we're the same age and we're both based in London and at the beginning of the year I was also playing clubs and pubs if you ever wanna work together or just hang or write something together or whatever just email me.

Katie's blog number one

Hi you guys!

I dont even know how many people could be reading this. I mean, I've really done nothing at all so far, but apparently a little video of me singing in a pub makes a lot of difference! I've had like a ziiiiillllliiiioooonnnn messages on Facebook this last week telling me how awesome I am! It makes me blush a little, but OMFG, it doesn't half give a girls' confidence a complete boost!

I hoe you all liked my interview over at Radio Chaos! The guy was a little flirty, and it was weird to talk knowing that so many people could hear me (I'm really not going to get used to this fame thing at all :o) but I really enjoyed it! It was fun to have a chance to talk about music and my life so far.

In other news, I can't wait for my demo to be released on Monday. It sounds oh so good (!), and the artwork is really pretty. I hope everyone likes it!

Oh, and finally, I am super excited by this piece of news! I got a ticket to the Chaos Award show! (eeeekkk!!) I know I totally am not nominated or anything, but because I was on there radio show, they gave me a free ticket....just hope I can find someone to go with.

Anyway, love peace, and any other happy little thoughts

Katie x~x

Katie's Single - "It's Only My Eyes" - Out Monday!

Hey guys, and thanks a million for taking the time out of your, no doubt, busy schedule to come here tonight and have a listen to Katie Coyle's debut single, entitled "It's Only My Eyes". The single features two very different and varied tracks as Katie strives to show what she can do, and what sort of an array of talent she has. Both Katie and I have worked very hard on a very low budget to produce this single, and we hope you like it. From NOW, you can hear both tracks, and listen to a description of the actual single, by the lady herself! Enjoy!

Simon Frances - Producer and Manager

OOC: I will fix this artwork tomorrow, a little tired now

It's Only My Eyes

Quote:
This song was probably one of the first I wrote for acoustic guitar. I had grown up learning how to play electric guitar with my uncle, and so playing acoustic, and the finger picking that came with it, wasn't until much later. Obviously, what with it being acoustic, this is the ballad track from my demo.
I wrote it when I was 15 years old, after a boy at school told me that he loved me, even when I knew he didn't, and when he split up with me, I had to pretend I was upset. :/ It sounds like a bit of an immature topic, but I think the song still sounds quite grown up. It has a lot of finger picking on the acoustic, and I like the way my voice came out on the track.
So, yeah, here it is "It's Only My Eyes"

The song begins with one quiet, minor strum on the guitar, followed by four taps on the body of the hollow instrument, and then another few minor chords. Katie's haunting voice comes in at this point, humming gently over the chords, before fading, and being replaced by one final, louder chord.

A slow picking of the strings in single note fashion, (akin to Radiohead style stuff) accompanies the opening verse, and the soft, London accented voice of Katie Coyle drifts effortlessly over the instruments dulcet tones....

"I was all alone when you called
You said we needed...to be alone
To feel what we were going to
You quoted love...with all the world"

A small bridge of slightly faster picking on the acoustic slowly returns to the same tones as before...

"I never knew that it could be so hard
To see so much
To be so fond
Of knowing...what you couldn't tell"

The world tell hangs in the air for a few seconds before a subtle drum beat plays and Katie's guitar strums some minor chords, a sad kind of tune, which leads into the slightly louder, and faster chorus, accompanied by drums

(Chorus)
"It's only my..eyes that cry
I knew you wanted me to go
It's just outside I weep
And never really felt so low
If you could just see that this was all a mask
You'd feel so red, embarrassed
I know you're scared to ask."

The chorus finishes, and the chords turn back to the slower picking again, this time with the subtle drums ticking along softly in the background. A second guitar plays some very soft chords in the background as Katie sings another verse.

"I sat there with you in the sun
Staring deep into those dead-brown-eyes
I couldn't believe you were not aware
That to you, I was not the one"

Some very deliberate continual chord strokes repeat for around ten seconds, before the chorus chords come back in.

(Chorus)
"It's only my..eyes that cry
I knew you wanted me to go
It's just outside I weep
And never really felt so low
If you could just see that this was all a mask
You'd feel so red, embarrassed
I know you're scared to ask."

The final verse is played with the deliberate jumpy chords throughout, as it builds up to a crescendo of Katie's frustration at the man's unwillingness to see what she saw he felt for her.

"You told me we were through
And then you looked into my eyes
I knew you still could not tell,
and so I took a deep breath, (and I told you.......)"

The final chorus x2, is played again, in a very upbeat manner. There is a key change to signify a change in her attitude to the guy, as Katie feels free, and the chords in this chorus are all major.

(Chorus)
"It's only my..eyes that cry
I knew you wanted me to go
It's just outside I weep
And never really felt so low
If you could just see that this was all a mask
You'd feel so red, embarrassed
I know you're scared to ask."

"It was only my..eyes that cried
I knew you wanted me to go
It was outside I wept
And never really felt so low
You couldn't just see-ee that it was all a mask
I watched you red, and embarrassed
But...you...still...could...not...just....aaasssskkkkk ."

As Katie's haunting tone dies away, it is replaced by the slow acoustic picking from the opening of the track....which gradually slows, and slows to nothing.

"I must admit. This Katie girl, from the sounds of it, seems to have talent, vocal talent in specific. Which is a great surprise, since I barely ever say that, considering as most new artists these days don't have much talent. And the ones who do, don't know how to use them correctly. But this girl seems to not only have talent but also knows how to use it correctly or it seems as she does. I'll certainly be listening to her future releases."
