Personally I feel that RE is just a big rip off of Silent Hill and SH is a far superior game and series.

If we're going by popularity then someone like say 50 Cent or Lil Wayne is better than Nine Inch Nails or Jefferson Airplane. My point is just because it brings something new to the table doesn't make it one of the Ten Greatest Games of All Time.

No, but what does make RE4 one of the best games of all time is the combination of all its elements. Not sure how the story of RE4 is crappy so much as it is silly, and also entirely befitting the game's setting. And I'm not talking about popularity here at all. I'm talking about critical acclaim. Resident Evil 4 is universally acclaimed by game critics. Are you saying all of those critics are wrong about the extremely high quality levels of Resident Evil 4?

My point about Grim Fandango is that the story is but one element, and the story of that game is better than the actual experience of playing the game. Whether or not the story is important depends on the genre, but gameplay, the experience of actually moving about in the game world, doing what it is you do in that game moment to moment, that must be the thing that differentiates games and other mediums. Story heightens an experience and in many cases it even makes up for a lack of gameplay polish, but really great games have to be more than that.

Despite the fact that Silent Hill started after Resident Evil 2 had already come out, and the fact that Silent Hill 1 played almost identically to Resident Evil games up to that point?

Haha RE 4 I meant. It borrowed a lot from the Silent Hill series, moving away from RE territory.

OK so Resident Evil has been critically acclaimed, why isn't Ratchet and Clank, all the Pokemons, Metal Gear Solid 1-4, Heavy Rain, Killzone 2, Guitar Hero, Grand Theft Auto 3-Vice City and Street Fighter II and IV on the list?

Because there's only room for 10 games and there's been a lot of games in the history of ever?

1. Tetris
2. Super Mario Galaxy
3. Half-Life 2
4. Red Dead Redemption
5. Streets of Rage 2
6. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
7. Super Metroid
8. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
9. Pokemon Yellow
10. Resident Evil 4

I feel there really has to be a GTA on the list, and whilst IV was a decent game, and the first for this generation of consoles...it just wasn't as fun to play, or as full as San Andreas was.

The fact that Paul likes it an awful lot.

I mean come on, what puts anything above anything else? My top game would be Football Manager 2010, and there isn't anyone else who is going to be agreeing with me here! But it's critically acclaimed, and I've never spent more time on a game than on that one.

I do, I have spent far too many hours of the last year and a bit playing that game.

Well if you don't like, it you can replace it with something else you think is worthy. That's the system, and if you make a good argument why something is more worthy that RE4, I'll accept that.

Personally, I'd limit it to one game per series though, so you have to pick the one Pokemon game that best represents the entire series, or the best GTA. I would say there are possible exceptions in cases like Super Mario where the 2D series is one thing, and the 3D series is another - but even there, I'd be hesitant to put two Mario games in the top ten.

If you are having that then I'd say GTA1 & 2 are entirely different from GTA3 etc

The one game from a series rule wasn't present in the original game as done on Kotaku, they preferred to let the players (READ: developers) decide whether or not a series deserves more than one appearance, so I have decided to leave that up to us as well.

Fair enough, I wasn't suggesting a rule, so much as a guideline. As in, if you're going to suggest a game from a series, pick the best game from the series to make your case, otherwise people are going to knock them out in favour of some other game.

Actually, looking back I was walking around your argument sorry about that. I should have been making more of a point on why Persona 3 was a great game in my opinion but it's alright now.

1. Tetris
2. Super Mario Galaxy
3. Half-Life 2
4. Red Dead Redemption
5. ESPN NFL 2K5
6. Golden Axe
7. Super Metroid
8. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
9. Pokemon Yellow
10. Resident Evil 4

I know this game'll be taken off because there aren't many US Football fans out there but for me(as I am one) this game was or should have been revolutionary. Its use of an In-Game Sportscenter was one of the biggest aspects that had me playing and thinking of this as more of a Sim then a Sports game and I liked that. Never played Streets Of Rage.

Not taking NFL 2K5 off because Im not a fan of the sport, but because NHL 2009 is the best and most innovative sports game on a console ever. For realism, and playability, nothing else in any other sport comes close.
