One of the positive side effects of studying Audio Engineering is that you come to appreciate aspects of a wide range of popular music, and learn to be analytical about things rather than just the usual gut reaction of most people. Of course, I've always had this aspect in me, but at least now there's some practical use for it.

People often shout about how something is "shit" or "the worst thing ever", but they almost never take the time to explain why, what exactly about it makes it so particularly bad. That kind of attitude bothers me. That being said, I do have gut reactions to music, I still get passionate about things I love or hate, but there's now a whole middle ground where I have no visceral reaction and I can assess it entirely on these academic terms. Only a couple of years ago, I would have a knee jerk reaction to most pop music of revulsion and loathing, but now not so much. In fact, I'm much more offended by the type of music the band Manowar might call "True Metal", or by gimmickry.

All that wordy blurb aside, the point is, Shakira's a talented singer, and the song isn't distinctly terrible, and doesn't hinge itself on a single gimmick. Would I ever listen to for pleasure? No. Never.

That's how anyone will sound singing that song live. Like I said its very complicated to sing because the song is fast, but she does great because she is dancing while singing and that's hard as hell!

Actually if you go to her website you can hear the Spanish version of her performance and she sounds better in Spanish, like I said all us latinos are more comfortable with our first language.
