Has the days of Bat out of Hell and Dark Side of the Moon passed us by, or is the next great Epic Band still out there waiting to reveal itself?

Yes there will, and there have been, and that you haven't noticed says more about you than the world of music.

Name some similar to the two I posted, that are not by the old artists, new bands only. I have seen none, and what are supposedly are epics...sound like utter crap to me.

Man on the Moon: The End of Days by KiD CuDi is pretty epic, especially for a modern hip-hop album.

Well in my book, Amon Amarth, Ensiferum are epic, Deathspell Omega's 'Fas- Ite, Maledicti, In Ignem Aeternum', same for My Dying Bride's 'Songs of Darkness, Words of Light'

I can't agree with the first part of that statement, I mean melodic death metal is utterly unepic.

But Fas... is a worthy mention, yes.

To be fair asdf, you've not really defined for us what "epic" is other than mention two albums. But even without knowing what it is I can say the answer is "of course there are still epic records". Just because it isn't happening in the mainstream, it's still happening.

I can think of one or two...

Boris - Flood
Isis - Oceanic, Panopticon
The Mars Volta - Frances the Mute
The Flaming Lips - The Soft Bulletin, Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots
Kayo Dot - Choirs of the Eye, Dowsing Anemone with Copper Tongue
Old Man Gloom - Seminar III: Zozobra
Opeth - Still Life
Porcupine Tree - In Absentia, Deadwing, Fear of a Blank Planet, The Incident
Sigur Rós - ( )
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum - Of Natural History
Sunn O))) - Monoliths and Dimensions
Sunn O))) & Boris - Altar
Tusk - The Resisting Dreamer

Those all feature an "epic" quality I would say. A musical vastness and splendour.

Not sure if you mean you dont think the music itself is epic, I was referring to the whole imagery and tales of war and conquest behind them more than the music.

An epic album means different things to different people. I can think of some epic albums, for example, that you wouldn't class as epic, and I'm sure you could do the same for me.

So yes, 'epic' music is still being made.

I quite enjoyed Still Life, although I quite enjoy Opeth.

Fair enough, your right. My definition of epic music is (dont laugh) - Over the top, lots of different music speeds ans styles in one song, complicated lyrics that still fit together nicely, and talk about any range of different things.

My favorite epic songs -

Final Count Down - 80s rocked man

Bat out of Hell - 70s rocked man...lol

Warriors of Time - Not bad for a newbie band

Long Road out of Eden - Awesome solo

November Rain/Knocking on Heavens Door - Guns n Roses used to be cool

Free Bird - The epitome of Guitar based Rock

Can't say I thought the majority of Use Your Illusion was that great, Appetite was the only one worth listening to, in my opinion. On another note.... ever heard of Opeth?

Yea, dont care too much for them...bands today almost never have a good singer and thats where most of the problem is. They have great music, great songwriting, but the singer always sucks.

I thought Fas... was utter bollocks. Si Monumentum Requires, Circumspice on the other hand defines the word "epic." That album is simply monstrous, and the best black metal album since BLASPHEMY's debut LP if you ask me. Although I hardly listen to black metal anymore, SMRC gets some spins here from time to time. I've had it since its release in 2004, and every time I listen to it I still discover new things. The three ARGHOSLENT discs (death metal that is truly melodic, unlike those crappy Swedish bands. It hardly gets any more epic than songs like Transpolar Combat, Defile the Angelic, Flogging the Cargo, The Nubian Archer, and Hereditary Taint) and SOLSTICE's second full length album New Dark Age album also qualify as epics in my opinion.

Opeth - Still Life

Opeth were the first band to spring to mind for me but i'd personally go for Blackwater Park.

I'd also add Mastodons latest effort, "Crack The Skye"
YOUR MUM has a new album out soon.

Blackberry Smoke sounds a lot like Skynyrd now that I think about it...most people have no clue who they are though.
