I'm not sure we want a new Bon Jovi.
Seriously though, you gotta look for new bands with a sound developed by themselves, because at the end you still have your acdc records if you wanna listen to something that sounds like acdc. That's just my point of view. |

asdf wrote:Okay, does anyone here know of any new bands who sound like old bands such as
Ac/dc Queen Skynyrd Bob Seger Bon Jovi Journey REO Speedwagon Bad English Survivor Why would you want new bands to sound like old bands? Wouldn't they then just be pale imitations of older, better bands? Also, Wolfmother. And Airbourne . They're both so like AC/DC, that when I actually heard them, I literally wanted to kick the universe to death. Edited by user 03 February 2010 12:52:59(UTC)

Again, not exactly like old bands, but in the same style as old bands. I cant stand the new style of rock music that most people like and I was just wondering if there was anyone who has the classic style that I like. |

Why does no one like Bon Jovi? Its because his music is unbearably crap. |

I must add, I did like Bon Jovi at one stage around his glam rock days (when I was just a dumb kid) but I stopped after he did the sound track for that gunslinger style movie. |

That movie sucked, and most of what he did after that sucked too, but his latest album is kind of a return to awesomeness. |

Well no, but you seem to be suggesting that there is one single unifying quality about all these bands, and that similarly all new music lacks any merit. Those are two ridiculous generalisations. I listened to a lot of classic prog in my teens, so for me the true "classic" bands were Pink Floyd, Yes, ELP, King Crimson, Camel, Caravan, Rush. I see a direct lineage between these bands and the likes of Porcupine Tree, The Mars Volta, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Kayo Dot. Not that they're retreading the same ground, but they're working from the same starting point of combining rock energy and a level of complexity either in compositional or production terms. Bands like Bon Jovi, Queen, AC/DC, Styx, etc. The defining quality seems to be of Anthemic rock tunes, but beyond that, their lineage is just all those bands who like playing rock and roll. The anthem has largely gone out of style, but then that Kings of Leons' song Sex on Fire comes along to make me sad. |

A song doesn't have to be 'big' or loud to be epic. For me, they have to convey a lot of emotion to be epic, or make you feel a certain way while you're listening to them. And that is, better than the ordinary songs you'd hear, after all, that's what EPIC means. I've found most people consider a song to be epic if it contains many singers for example, or has a string section in the background. Edited by user 04 February 2010 02:08:00(UTC)

An epic is a long book, poem, or film, whose story extends over a long period of time or tells of great events. 2. Something that is epic is very large and impressive. I think you're thinking of Epic in the mad-for-it, wicked, radical, totally-bodacious, neat, transitory slang way. The kind of way that makes me want to slap people. |

Pretty much what I was trying to point out. For me, songs that are designed to sound epic in that traditional sense, aren't. |

No I said the new style sucks. Whatever though, I do think that music should have stayed the same as it used to be, if 20 bands could be famous in the 80s playing the same style does that make them just copying off each other? No, just like if a new band played the same style they would not be copying the old bands. Music style and band style are two different things, and I was referring to music style. |

There is no "new" style. That's such a meaningless cop-out. |

No, my point is that there are a whole range of styles. There is no single unifying feature, other than being music. |

asdf wrote:The way is all is done, is different than it used to be. You cant deny that. The way what is done? Recording? Sure, that's changed (and technically improved if creatively stagnated). Compositional style? That's changed with trends but the old style is still viable and alive. Still not sure what this "new style" is that you're talking about, who comes under such an umbrella, or why it's such a bad thing that popular music is no longer exactly the same as it was in the late 70s and 80s. |
