Statement from Gemma Kane
The following reads as a verbatim statement from Lashes singer Gemma Kane in response to an article printed about her personal life in Culture Uncut earlier this week, as provided by the PR team of the band. Ms Kane would like to address the situation so as to put all rumours and wickedness to bed before it spirals out of control.I decided to start this statement by providing a picture (see above). The reason for this is that it was clear from an article written about me on your website, that people don't know me. They may well know Lashes from our stint on TV way back when, but people don't seem to know me. So that is me. My name is Gemma Kane, I come from Yorkshire in England, I am 22 years old, and I am a singer in a pop band. Ok? I don't know what else to tell you guys who want to get to know me, but Google me or something before you start taking potshots at me for absolutely no reason. You see, this is the point, and the main reason why I wanted to come out and address this article tonight. You guys who wrote that; you didn't want to get to know me. You didn't want to know who I am or what I am all about. No. You guys wanted to bring me down and degrade me. You wanted to stick the boot in because of some allegations over a marriage that you had heard from a source somewhere. Did you take the time to think that if you had called me, or if you had called James Urie that you may have gotten an answer? Rather than just printing something completely unsubstantiated? I doubt that was even a thought in your head though, so I have no idea why I'm appealing to your judgement; better or otherwise. Some things were said about me in this article that really hurt. I want to address those, so that I do not have allegations and questions raining down on me at 3AM when I am trying to sleep in the early hours of Sunday. Number one: I do not "get my claws into" anything or anyone. I am a strong and independent young woman with a career and a personality of my own, and I have no intention of grasping onto something someone else has. No matter how "hot" they might be. And number 2: I have no need to try to cheat to get a Green Card. I have travelled and studies in the US many times, and as such, I believe myself to be very welcome and wanted in that country. Had I wanted a visa, I'd have applied like anyone else. Ok, so I suppose I should also address the main cusp of the story, and the reason that you are all most likely reading this. The "rumours" that I am married to James Urie. The unsubstantiated rumour that your magazine opted to publish with no thought of verifying the story. Well, I would like to confirm, to bring an end to the rumours, that James Urie and I are indeed married, and we did have our wedding ceremony last weekend in my home city. We have been keeping this quiet, for this reason that you can all now plainly see. We didn't want for this to happen. We wanted to be ourselves, and to be allowed the chance to grow as a couple together in our early days of marriage. We have seen what the media can do to other couples, and for that reason, we have kept ourselves out of the spotlight so that we can be a normal couple. Is there anything wrong with that? James and I met on the set of Star Factory, and the only time we were photographed together in public was when we went to the FCA together. That was the night we fell in love, and from then on, we decided that it would be best for us to keep ourselves out of the spotlight. We are well aware that many people will look down on this marriage because we haven't been dating all that long. However, we love each other, and we will make it work. All we ask is that we are given some privacy and respect. Thank you, Gemma Urie. |
