What's it like being Nadia Berry right now?
Do you have all day? (Laughs) My life's a little crazy most of the time, but isn't everyone's? I think the best way to put it is that I live a hectic life because I choose to live a hectic life. I didn't have to make the last GirlSpice record with the girls, I didn't have to go on a world tour with them, I didn't have to make a new solo record... it all comes down to just loving what I do. I've been in this business for a long time now, I wouldn't do something that I didn't love.
So when you say you've been in this business a long time, would you call yourself a veteran?
Hmm... oh, go on then!
Back to the mention of GirlSpice, is there ever conflict in the group?
(Rolls eyes) All the time, and I'm not even exaggerating, but you probably already know that. I think we've always been quite open about the whole conflict thing as a group, you'll always see us having some sort of banter during an interview, it's all natural when there's four girls in one group. A lot of girl groups come and go, and it's because they put up this nicey-nice front during an interview, where they all practically hold hands and smile sweetly, then backstage they're ripping each others hair out and calling each other a bitch, you know? We're like that... we just do it very openly a lot of the time, but we all love each other really. It's like a family, you'll always bicker, but you never abandon your family... even if someone in your family is called Chantal. (Smiles)
Chantal has always been a big talking point in the group in the media as well as amongst the fans, why do you think you were the one who had the opportunity to go solo?
It wasn't a situation where I was simply approached by a label to go solo and I said "Oh yeah, sure", it was because I wanted to make a solo record, and I've just carried on making them from the first one. I don't know if Chantal has any desire to make a solo record, but if she did, then I would definitely support her. She's very outspoken and it comes across as rude a lot of the time, but I like to think she means well a lot of the time.
It seems like every member in GirlSpice has some sort of characteristic; Chantal is the in-your-face and confrontational one, Kimberly is the rockstar wannabe and party animal and Sophia is the cute, ditzy one. What do you think yours is?
Once upon a time, I was the off-the-rails, wild and bitchy one, but of course I've matured a lot from then. I've got a more sensible head on my shoulders after everything, although I did say to someone a while ago that I'm probably the girl-next-door type, who's secretly a nympho behind closed doors... (Winks)
The Night Rider album saw a huge return for GirlSpice and saw success that was even greater than before. What's next for the group?
At the moment, we're just finishing with the final few weeks of the tour. It's quite sad to know that I won't see them for a while after it, mainly because I'll be spending time with my boyfriend, then doing loads of promotion around the world for the album. I don't know when we'll be doing our next album, but of course I look forward to it! There's no rush, so thankfully I've got as long as I want with my solo career for now.
Moving onto the topic of your album, why did you decide to name it Open Heart Surgery?
It was a pretty easy decision for me, mainly because I put a lot of emotion into this record. There were many things in the past that I had to open up about that I previously never wanted to, because you start to feel the pain of those moments again. Because of that, there were definitely a lot of tears when recording this album, but to move on from stuff, they say you have to confront it and let it all out, which is what I've done now, instead of bottling it all up. Of course, there were a lot of moments in the present as well where I'd felt pain and I wanted to include it, I've kinda made myself an open book now. Oh god, I've just made my own album sound like the soundtrack to an emo's life. (Laughs) But thankfully, I do have a mixture of stuff on the album! It's not all doom and gloom.
How long have you been working on the album so far and what tracks are your favourite?
I would say roughly five months, I have around seventeen songs now, and I'm hoping to have a few more before the end of December. Then the worst part is after that, working out what makes it and what doesn't, because it's like picking which children you want to save... I'm useless on deciding stuff like that, so it takes me way longer than it should do. I have wayyy too many favourites! They always change, but at the moment it's between "Light Us Up" and "One of Those Days", the former has more of an indie sound to it and I put myself in the place of someone who's hurt someone else and is looking to make amends. The latter is the blues track I talked about a little while ago, it's like a love song gone raunchy, you block out the morning rain and the alarm for work, because you're so obsessed with the other person, that you can't seem to make it out of bed to be away from them to face the day.
"One of Those Days" was the song you stated was inspired by your boyfriend, Ryan, wasn't it?
That's the one. I've always made it known that I'm a big fan of Ryan's music and I've always wanted to do a song in a similar genre, so I was more than pleased with the way it turned out. And of course, a Ryan Ross Hernandez inspired song had to be one that was chilled, yet sexy at the same time... I think I pulled it off! If not, I fully await many hate messages from his female fans, although I'd probably still get it even if it was the best damn song in the world. (Laughs)
