All songs written by Nadia Berry.
SOUND
"Light Us Up" serves as the opening song for Open Heart Surgery, and perfectly sets the tone of the majority of the album. With its mellow and relaxed opening consisting of acoustic guitar and violins, Nadia's vocals soon come in for the first line "Through the storm and clouds that overshadow me", her voice sounding soft and emotional. The two instruments remain present throughout the entire song, the violins becoming louder and more dominant in the chorus, giving the song a dramatic feel. They fade back out slightly for the following verse, her vocals complimenting well with the soft guitars. The middle eight becomes the only time in the song where Nadia's vocals change from soft, to more powerful and strong, followed by an acoustic guitar riff. Then moving into the final chorus where additional background vocals from Nadia are present.
COMMENTS
"I said that I don't like talking particularly about my songs in a way that I don't like saying why I wrote it, or who I wrote it about, or anything like that. I want people to relate to my songs, and if I give everything away to a song, I feel that it's harder for people to relate the song to their own situation. So my aim throughout the explanation of this album, is to keep some of the mystery there, not put my songs in a box where it's about only one specific subject, and to not go into too much detail. So, here we go!
It was the very first song that I wrote for the album, so I thought it was only right for it to become the first song on the record. It's quite sad sounding, but I wanted it to be dramatic at the same time, which is why there's so much focus on the violins in the track, they really made it for me. It's based on a person who's caused a lot of pain to a loved one, and I put myself in their place. I was thinking of what a person would write to someone else if they were trying to make amends, and this was what I came up with. It's one of my favourites on the record, and I'm hoping it's a song that can bring some comfort to people."
Through the storm and clouds that overshadow me I've been walking for miles, in search for shelter I've been looking for a face, looking for a place Longing for that one who I get to call my own Time's passed and I know we can't grab it back But I'm hoping this storm's just temporary... We'll make it through the rain and all else that comes
A burning fire that's been put out prematurely A home that's no longer called a home A heart that no longer beats for us With my arms spread open, I wanna give you my all Don't worry about a thing, I wanna resurrect it all
I've been calling out for you to only get my echoes back Conversations with myself, I've learnt the hard way If only you'd tell me that there's a chance for us to relight Then without a word I'd let you start it up I'd hand over the matchsticks in a heartbeat Yeah, without a word I'd let you light us up And we'd burn brighter than ever before
Through the cold and damp that's surrounded me I've been fighting through every obstacle in my way Because I told you I'd make it up to you I told you I'd never break a promise again So find faith that we'll be able to build on our foundations We'll grow gradually, just like how we were before And I'll make sure to patch up the hole that I left in your heart
A burning fire that's been put out prematurely A home that's no longer called a home A heart that no longer beats for us With my arms spread open, I wanna give you my all Don't worry about a thing, I wanna resurrect it all
I've been calling out for you to only get my echoes back Conversations with myself, I've learnt the hard way If only you'd tell me that there's a chance for us to relight Then without a word I'd let you start it up I'd hand over the matchsticks in a heartbeat Yeah, without a word I'd let you light us up And we'd burn brighter than ever before
Eyes that I used to find so much comfort in Now full of so much emptiness, they're a reminder of this guilty conscience And it's been living with me day and night And it's reminded me every waking moment That I never wanna be the one to hurt you again I never wanna be the one to make a sequel to the heartbreak I once caused
I've been calling out for you to only get my echoes back Conversations with myself, I've learnt the hard way If only you'd tell me that there's a chance for us to relight Then without a word I'd let you start it up I'd hand over the matchsticks in a heartbeat Yeah, without a word I'd let you light us up And we'd burn brighter than ever before |
