SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) is the biggest controversy on the web right now. It gives the government the right to remove a site of the internet if a record label or film company finds pirated material on it. It basically gives these companies and the government the right to censor the internet. If this bill is passed sites like Youtube could be removed from the internet if a user uploads illegal material or break copyright laws. Which is a good +70% of Youtube users. Tomorrow Wikipedia will shutdown for 24hrs in protest of SOPA, but only its most visited version the English language one. Other sites like Google, Facebook, Twitter, and major online sites are planning a blackout if the bill is passed also.

Advocates for SOPA-
Big 4 record labels (Warner Music Group, Universial Music, EMI, Sony Music International)
All the major film studios
All major television netowrks
Some tech companies (Apple, Microsoft, Intel)
Music, film, and book publishers

Against-
All the major internet sites
Some tech companies
Many video game companies
Internet Hacker group "Anonymous"

Pretty much what it is Wikipedia: SOPA

This is the U.S., Record Labels, and Film Studios, trying to control the internet. Giving them way too much power on what people can access. Also, not to long ago Spain passed a similar law.

This whole thing is bull crap. Piracy will never be stopped, so they are wasting their time. Not only that, but they are going about it in the most tee-totally wrong way possible by limiting more internet activity than they could ever possibly imagine. It's just stupid.

I agree with you Cody, but I'm also worried about the new generation and their addiction towards technology and the internet. Maybe this would be a good way to move us forward, but then again It is unfair to all the hard work that went to all those sites. So I think that the way they are approaching this is a bit unfair and unbelievable to be honest.

This will solve nothing. They will find another way for piracy. It could turn messy though before a conclusion is sorted. Its the 'smaller' labels that deserve more money than the big 4, they are making millions and billions anyway, its just greed for them. Where as smaller labels and bands are making just pennies out of it all, they deserve more support.

One of my favorite musicians recently tweeted a reply to a kid asking "What's your advice for someone looking to enter the music industry?" He replied with "If your looking for money, find a different job. If you have the love and passion for music, it will come naturally."

Thats says alot.

The bill is dumb. I am against piracy, but it's a fight I don't think you can win by law. You can't say "let's shut down half the internet". Well I guess you can, but you can't actually shut down half the internet.

The basic issue is that piracy is similar to hacking. If you find a way to prevent someone from getting access to something, someone will find a way to get access, and tell other people how to get access. They will always be two steps ahead. The threat just mutates and evolves.

Another major problem is Congress has said time and time again, that they don't understand the internet. And the people in Congress that do know, get shut down. Even the President is against the bill, so it does give me some hope that it won't get passed. This may or may not be a good example, but another law that America passed known as Prohibition, seeked to make the selling and consuming of alcohol illegal. Well, we all know how that went. People found different ways to get their hands on it, and thus bad thing happened because of that. If this bill does get passed, there will be another way to pirate music; and people will just use proxies to bypass blocked sites.

very true, am quite interested to see what form the Bill will take now...
although i would argue the killimg of megaupload using existing laws probably did more damage to sopa than anything else.

Megaupload going away is perfectly reasonable to me, because 99%+ of that site's usage was as a kind of dead letter box for casual piracy. The whole "we're not responsible for the content our users upload" argument is fairly absurd when you've created a tool for uploading and sharing large files anonymously.

Is that really the case that 99% of its usage was for piracy? because I used it for plenty aside from that. It's been useful for Football Manager databases, saved games, and mods for other games. And Megaupload, Rapidshare, Mediafire et al don't just claim that it's not their responsibility, they remove files when notified that they breech copyright. Users are told in the T&C not to upload copyrighted material. It's like killing a dude because he's got gangrene in his foot and it needs to be removed before it spreads to the body. So lets just lop his head off.

Really, those sharing sites got nothing on Torrents when it comes to piracy.

I personally used it for TEW Databses and Mods. Now I'm without them. Meh.

Hah, you play TEW? Awesome. At this very moment I'm playing another of Adam Rylands games, World of Mixed Martial Arts. And yes, the mods for those games, which are regularly updated, essentially make those games.

Yeah, I think it's fair to say the vast majority of Megaupload traffic is stolen porn, music, video or other pirate content. Torrents are different because it's piracy spread between pirates directly. Megaupload is actually hosting the files. Since Megaupload's income is ad-based, it is in their interest to attract as many hits as possible, so they turn a blind eye to piracy, and profit from it, until they are specifically told about a violation, and in some cases rather than remove the file, they seemingly just removed links to it. That's the specific crime they are guilty of, knowingly profiting from piracy.

How do you expect a service like MU to police every file uploaded to see if it is copyrighted material? I mean shit, lots of the things I download, like Football Manager Face Packs (player pictures, team badges, accurate strips) are technically in breach of copyright, it's the reason they aren't in the game out of the box. Ditto with this Panini-style face pic pack I downloaded for World of MMA's Dawn of MMA mod. Policing it would be unfeasably expensive for the website owner. And what then for video game mod creators? Should they all have to pay for hosting? And anyway, get the fuck off your high horse Mr Downloads Lots of TV Shows That You'd Have To Watch On Pay TV Or Buy The DVD Of Much Later On. Unless you've stopped that in the past 5 months in which case I apologise.

Again, you are trying to kill a fly with an atom bomb.

Did you see that WMMA went down to $10? I had it a few months ago on my old laptop but it died on me. Now I'm probably gonna buy it again, WMMA is so greeaaatttt though.

I was not aware I was on a high horse. I figured I was standing on solid ground. Yes, I steal currently running US TV shows. What I am saying is that knowingly profiting from a service that is used for piracy is a crime. It's not like Megaupload is the only free distribution service for large files anyway.

Also not quite sure how widespread casual piracy is a fly, and the closure of one internet site used in widespread casual piracy on a for-profit basis is an atom bomb.

I want it but the cost is a little off-putting, it's cheap compared to other games but still, WMMA1 is where I'm most likely headed. Also Royce Gracie wins it all? Just the usual.

Bah, I feel wrong going off-topic here, Video-Game thread coming up.
