Vanity goes back to the dark electronic sounds that were once heard on previous album Good Mourning for her new EP, Tease. The upcoming four-track EP is what Vanity describes as an "erotic electronic extravaganza" and she's not wrong if "Dirty Lover" is anything to go by, a hard-hitting, gloomy electronic track with striking synthesizers and a pounding bassline that almost drowns out Vanity's vocals, which are already powerful in itself, so it says a lot about the force within the instrumental of the track. After The Sound of Living, an uplifting, euphoric album full of joyful house music, "Dirty Lover" is strictly for those electronic music fans who like that dark, dirty feel to their beats, and dirty is certainly what you get if we're judging her lyrics alone. "Cause once you're harder than the ice in my drink / These walls are a lot thinner than you'd think" she sings seductively on the opening verse, clearly not holding back her sexual needs in the song and parading it around proud, which is supposedly what her upcoming music is all about. It's not all straight-forward filth though, "I can kiss you on your lips like your mother / Or I can give it to you good like a dirty lover" she sings in the chorus. We're not sure why anyone would want to be kissed on their lips like their mother, especially if you're their girlfriend, but hey, it's Vanity, we all know she's slightly (more than slightly) unhinged. The song increases in power as it continues, Vanity's vocals doing the same, until we see the volume of her voice reach its peak in the instrumental breakdown in the middle-eight, her voice increasing each time she says "louder", and that final brain-rattling chorus kicks in. All in all, it's a great, but risky move from Vanity, but we're sure she's got the fan base to help make it pay off.
VANITY ON THE EP:
"This EP is a literal tease, in the sense that all of the songs are going to be featured on my new album, dropping next year. I've been so excited to share my new music with the fans, I just had to put out these few songs that I feel give a great taster of what you can expect, it's all definitely a new direction for me, in terms of lyrics and the theme as a whole. I'm embracing my sexuality like never before, and making what I like to call a modern day Erotica. As a pop music lover, I've always managed to mesh my love for art within my songs, and this time round, I'm blending sex and art together in a way that I've never done before. In these times, I think lyrics in pop music is becoming sexual in the cheapest of ways, and I want to demonstrate how it's possible to add a touch of class to your lyrics when you sing about sex. It's the most beautiful form of interaction, and yet I feel we're dumbing it down for the radio, it's about a pair of big tits and and shaking an ass, where's the suggestiveness? We're putting it right in your face, there's no mystery, it's like a cheap whore on a corner, compared to a high-class hooker. Both the same thing, but worded differently, and suddenly you value one more than the other. It's all in the power of language, and my music is embracing the power within sex. It's still filthy, but in all the right ways."
VANITY ON "DIRTY LOVER":
"It was an extremely tough battle between every song on the EP when it came to choosing the first single, because I truly believe they're all great and deserve their own time to shine. Which is partially why these songs in particular have been put on this EP, it's a short collection of songs, so you can take them all in individually and study them, break them down, and fuck to them. Like all the best music. In the end, I decided to go with 'Dirty Lover' as I feel it's one of the most unapologetic songs I've ever done, and also one of the dirtiest, it's extremely kinky and will for sure raise a few eyebrows. At this stage in my career, I've already pissed off so many groups of people, I've gotten to the stage where it's almost like a game, how many people can I piss off in one go? The lyrics to this song in particular are just extremely out there, about a good religious girl enjoying sex. I wanted to make it sensual and seductive, whilst having a real down-right dirty feel to the lyrics, and hopefully I've managed to achieve the feel of both in the song. I also wanted this really explosive, grimy beat that would literally make the sanest person go fucking insane, it's probably the best beat I've ever had on a song, it's more than a song, it's a sonic experience. I didn't want people to think it was too safe, so I've decided to do my own thing and what I want. If you like this song, you'll love the direction I've gone for on the EP and the upcoming album, so I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I've had fun making it, it's always good to transfer your horniness into music. This song is a result of that."
