SOUND
Opening with fast-paced drums, "Risktaker" packs a punch from the get-go, before the tempo drops slightly for the opening verse, Nadia's vocals are sweet and slightly whispered, before they turn louder for the pre-chorus, Nadia belts out each line powerfully, before moving into an atmospheric chorus where the drums are accompanied with an orchestral backing. The lines to the chorus are almost spoken, but still put out in a way that there's a sort of catchiness to it, her voice remaining bold and confident. However, on later choruses, the spoken-style to the first chorus is gone, the instruments build up, and Nadia provides stellar vocals throughout. Everything drops out for the middle-eight, apart from gentle piano chords as Nadia's voice turns breathy and light, the lines close to being whispered, adding a needed gentle touch to the song, before moving into its dramatic final chorus.

"Risktaker"
(N. Berry)

My heart's alight - don't put out the fire
Let's play a game of true or false with my emotions
I'm wondering if my feelings are all an illusion
Or if they're the reality that I'm searching for
If they're the light at the end of the tunnel
Or if they're the demons that wreck havoc in my head
A maze that I can't seem to find an escape from
And I'm blindfolded on this road ahead

With you, I'm living life on the edge
And I'd jump off at any second
Just for you, and it's all for you
With you, I'm living life on the edge
And I'm hanging by a thread
Standing tall, for you I'd fall

You're the biggest risk that I'll ever take
Even if it's the biggest mistake I'll ever make
Even if I'm left in tears at the end of it all
I'll still tell myself that you were worth the fall
You're the biggest risk that I'll ever take
Even if it's the biggest mistake I'll ever make
Cause it's only you who I'd give my heart to break

Just kiss me now, before I change my mind
Will we even still know each other in a year's time?
People try to write the ending, continue pretending
That we crashed and burned long ago
But even if I'm walking straight into a car crash
I'm willing to be the one who gets taken for a ride
Cause I'm not a people pleaser, only living for myself
Forgive me or not, but I can't love him any less

With you, I'm living life on the edge
And I'd jump off at any second
Just for you, and it's all for you
With you, I'm living life on the edge
And I'm hanging by a thread
Standing tall, for you I'd fall

You're the biggest risk that I'll ever take
Even if it's the biggest mistake I'll ever make
Even if I'm left in tears at the end of it all
I'll still tell myself that you were worth the fall
You're the biggest risk that I'll ever take
Even if it's the biggest mistake I'll ever make
Cause it's only you who I'd give my heart to break

Arms spread open, standing on the ledge
Heart beating faster, jumping off the edge
Only to be caught by you everytime
But if you decide to never catch me again
The trust I had in you was a feeling I never felt before
So watch me drown as the sun goes down
And it'd all be worth it...

Ryan: Well, I do believe Risktaker was a collective favourite of ours when we first heard the album.. for some reason, it just got better. Visually incredible, sounding on par with visuals.

Nate: Hey I have an idea. The Japanese government should initiate Project:Nadia. This would be where they put you in Japan in order to stop their over-population issues. Non woman will want to make love to a man if they see a billboard with you on it! Oh, and yes.. love the middle-eight, sounds dark and beautiful.

Opening with the sound of strong wind blowing, a far away shot is seen of Nadia standing at the top of a cliff. The camera begins to zoom in slowly from behind her, she's seen in a beautiful flowing black dress, one side of it cut off to show her leg. She turns around and is seen blindfolded, her hair blows in the wind, and she begins to move towards the camera, which is when the opening of the song begins.

"My heart's alight - don't put out the fire
Let's play a game of true or false with my emotions
I'm wondering if my feelings are all an illusion
Or if they're the reality that I'm searching for
If they're the light at the end of the tunnel
Or if they're the demons that wreck havoc in my head
A maze that I can't seem to find an escape from
And I'm blindfolded on this road ahead"

She throws the blindfold off, her eyes are watery, mascara dripping down her cheek. She stops walking and turns around, where she sees another version of herself jumping off the edge of the cliff. She quickly moves forward and looks over the edge where she sees herself fall, her eyes widen and she hurriedly backs away.

"With you, I'm living life on the edge
And I'd jump off at any second
Just for you, and it's all for you
With you, I'm living life on the edge
And I'm hanging by a thread
Standing tall, for you I'd fall"

As the chorus hits, she looks straight into the camera, her mascara still smudged and her hair a mess from the strong wind. She turns around and walks in the opposite direction, she sees yet another version of herself from afar, looking perfect and not a thing out of place, a stunning wedding ring on her finger as she smiles and comforts a baby that she holds. She walks closer to this version of herself, but the view fades away. She shakes her head, confused.

"You're the biggest risk that I'll ever take
Even if it's the biggest mistake I'll ever make
Even if I'm left in tears at the end of it all
I'll still tell myself that you were worth the fall
You're the biggest risk that I'll ever take
Even if it's the biggest mistake I'll ever make
Cause it's only you who I'd give my heart to break"

She continues to walk in the same direction, her eyes don't move from the camera and she simply carries on moving forward, cutting in between shots of her taken from afar, showing off the beautiful landscape around her and also showing a storm brewing, where it soon begins to rain.

"Just kiss me now, before I change my mind
Will we even still know each other in a year's time?
People try to write the ending, continue pretending
That we crashed and burned long ago
But even if I'm walking straight into a car crash
I'm willing to be the one who gets taken for a ride
Cause I'm not a people pleaser, only living for myself
Forgive me or not, but I can't love him any less"

As the second chorus begins, she looks up into the sky where it begins to rain, she then shakes her wet hair slightly and stops to look around, confused on deciding which direction to go in, looking weak and hopeless. She turns to her left, moving to the edge of the cliff once again, she holds her arms out, looking up into the sky as her dress blows in the wind. The camera slowly zooms in up close to her face, closing her eyes whilst singing the middle eight.

"Arms spread open, standing on the ledge
Heart beating faster, jumping off the edge
Only to be caught by you everytime
But if you decide to never catch me again
The trust I had in you was a feeling I never felt before
So watch me drown as the sun goes down
And it'd all be worth it..."

She takes a deep breath as the intense final chorus hits, looking down at the ocean below her, the rain hitting the water. She jumps off of the edge and falls at great speed, soon hitting the water. A shot of the ocean is seen for a few seconds as we assume she has drowned, but she comes back up shortly after where she moves her hair away from her face and smiles.

"'Risktaker' was definitely the most challenging video that I've ever done in my entire career, but that's probably not much of a surprise. Believe it or not, jumping off of a cliff and swimming in freezing cold water during a storm are not my favourite things to do! But for the end result, I'm glad I did it all, it was most definitely all worth it, I sound so damn crazy right now, I am, but I definitely don't regret it. 'Risktaker' is of course, a song all about taking risks, doing things even though you have no idea what to expect as the outcome, things can go either way and you don't know what's going to happen. That was the reason behind the different visions that I saw in the video, it was me seeing the possible outcomes of a situation. As for the cliff, I'm currently at the highest point in my own personal relationship right now, so filming up there definitely symbolised that and showed that I could either fall from such a great, high point, or continue to grow from there. I wrote every treatment and co-directed every video so far for this album, and this one was no different, so I hope you all enjoyed seeing the song come to life in the video. Thank you for watching!"

Katie: What a touching...not video...but mini-movie. That was so amazing that I'm going to actually refrain from making lewd comments about you for just now :) Seriously though, this really spoke to me a lot. It's like, being up on the cliff, the very pinnacle of life, and feeling so high above all the problems and trials and tribulations...but also being aware of just how precarious that position is. People take too much for granted, and I think this video shows just how we should appreciate things. Also though, I love the idea of just taking that risk...just stepping off the edge and seeing what life will hand you. We can all expect to hit the stormy seas below at some point in our lives after making a decision...but if we don't take that plunge, then how would we ever know.
This is a great video Nad. I love how it is so deep and meaningful.

OOC: Loved it! Clearly really well thought out and well written :)

Ryan: Am I the one only who thinks the biggest risk shown in this video is with the baby? Is it just me the only one who rather jump off a cliff than have a child? I guess it's just me then. The video is just beautiful. The scenery found here is not often found elsewhere, especially in music videos. Nadia has balls to do all that crazy shit she did for the sake of art. I found it rather heartwarming when I heard what the cliff symbolized. No one can top Nadia Berry when it comes to music videos, she's the undisputed queen in that field.

I'm sure that this will be another hit and the amount of people that are jealous of you will only increase, myself being one of them :P Really looking forward to hearing 'Records On' :)

[culture uncut review]
Whether you like it or not, Nadia Berry has certainly made her mark these past few months as a solo artist. Nadia's fourth solo studio album Open Heart Surgery won a Chaos Award, and has exceeded sales of 2.5 million. Before that, GirlSpice's album Night Rider became their biggest by far, selling over five million copies and reaching a Diamond certification. Away from music, her debut fragrance Enchanted has become one of the fastest selling celebrity perfumes of the year. Going by that, life must be pretty sweet for Miss Berry! Although life can't be too bad for Nadia Berry fans, as the pop songstress has hurried back with a brand new song, titled "Records On".

If you were scared that Nadia may have cashed in by throwing out a dance album this time round, you thought wrong, as "Records On" picks up where the majority of Open Heart Surgery left off. However, it's evident both sonically and lyrically that there's been a lot of growth in just a few months, and guess what? It seems like she's no longer depressed! At the core, "Records On" is a simple love song, but Nadia makes sure it strays from being cliché, turning the song into a celebration of a lovers music collection, finding comfort in his records. It doesn't sound very exciting, but believe it or not, it strangely works. "Your vinyl collection, my new obsession / Drop the needle and we'll lay there in ecstasy" Nadia softly sings on a pre-chorus that may just get stuck in your head for days, before moving into an equally catchy chorus.

With a mix of pretty much everything on her last album, it's clear that Nadia's still trying to find her sound as a solo artist. From the reggae-tinged "Good Girls Don't Lie", to the euphoric club track "Shadow", Nadia seemed a little lost on Open Heart Surgery. We just hope the rest of this upcoming album is along the lines of this first single, because we could be in for a treat.

Opening with a crackling vinyl sound which Nadia sings the chorus over in a gentle, higher register, before the song kicks off with a repeated drum pattern, mixed with sweet sounding synths that manage to give the song a slightly more pop feel. The drums remain consistent throughout the track, whilst light piano notes played by Nadia herself are heard in the background of the following chorus. Mid-song, everything drops out for a simplistic, but catchy acoustic guitar riff that Nadia is also credited for, as she's heard softly humming over it. It's no surprise that Nadia has been learning guitar recently, being trained by none other than boyfriend Ryan Ross Hernandez, and best friend Katie Coyle, two of the greats in that area, so there's certainly no doubt that she's being taught by the best. The song remains mid-tempo throughout the whole song, right up into the final chorus where the song seems to burst into life with louder drums and strong, sensuous guitars, bringing the song to a perfect end and leaving a lasting impression.

It seems like Nadia is definitely now taking a hands on approach to the production side of her music now, and it's a great thing to see her continue to have more input with each album release. Of course, it's only a simple riff, but it's a start, and it's certainly refreshing to see a girl band member become so DIY with her own music, solely writing the lyrics and being credited as a co-producer of the track. If this is the result when she does get so involved, then she's more than welcome to in future, because "Records On" is definitely Nadia at her best.

"Records On"
(N. Berry)

Curtains drawn, your favourite records on
My head on your chest as we sing along
Falling asleep until early afternoon
Waking up and singing the same old tune
Lower your head and whisper in my ear
The only two things I forever wanna hear
Curtains drawn, your favourite records on
Tell me you love me at the end of this song

Once we close the door and shut out the world
Heaven is a place that we both soon find
Wrap me in your arms so tight
Boy, go and put your records on
At the loudest possible volume
We'll sing your favourite songs all night
That's when I know everything's gonna be alright

Your vinyl collection, my new obsession
Drop the needle and we'll lay there in ecstasy
Your vinyl collection, my new obsession
We'll lay there in ecstasy, just you and me

Curtains drawn, your favourite records on
My head on your chest as we sing along
Falling asleep until early afternoon
Waking up and singing the same old tune
Lower your head and whisper in my ear
The only two things I forever wanna hear
Curtains drawn, your favourite records on
Tell me you love me at the end of this song

Lying on your bed and forgetting about anyone else
Paradise is so easy to find
You hold me close and close your eyes
I said boy, go and put your records on
I love 'em just as much as you
Close to you, I laid there and cried
Thinking about all the good times and how time flies
All the good times we had to your favourite songs

Your vinyl collection, my new obsession
Drop the needle and we'll lay there in ecstasy
Your vinyl collection, my new obsession
We'll lay there in ecstasy, just you and me

Curtains drawn, your favourite records on
My head on your chest as we sing along
Falling asleep until early afternoon
Waking up and singing the same old tune
Lower your head and whisper in my ear
The only two things I forever wanna hear
Curtains drawn, your favourite records on
Tell me you love me at the end of this song

All these love songs you play
And I'm thinking ahead of today
Wondering what new memories we'll make
What tomorrow will bring when we next wake
Ooh, put your records on, boy
Let's make 'em the soundtrack to our wonderful life

Your vinyl collection, my new obsession
Drop the needle and we'll lay there in ecstasy
Your vinyl collection, my new obsession
We'll lay there in ecstasy, just you and me

Curtains drawn, your favourite records on
My head on your chest as we sing along
Falling asleep until early afternoon
Waking up and singing the same old tune
Lower your head and whisper in my ear
The only two things I forever wanna hear
Curtains drawn, your favourite records on
Tell me you love me at the end of this song

Katie: Aw yeah! My girl playing the guitar! It brings a tear to my ear to think that I even had the smallest part in this coming to fruition, and I am so so proud of you Nadia! It really is great to hear. As for the song, it may just be my favourite Nadia Berry song ever. I must admit, when I heard the title, I was a little apprehensive about what it would be, because it sounded more like the title to some disco track. But it delivered. And big time too. It reminds me of a day curled up beside a girl just letting the world pass by as we relax. The best kind of day ever. Curtains drawn, your favourite records on, my head on your chest as we sing along...it's gonna be in my head all day. More importantly though, it brings a smile to my face every time you sing those lines. It brings out memories for me, and I love music that does that.
Best song of yours ever!

OOC: Love the fact that you used a review to introduce it, great work, and the lyrics are fantastic :)
