ADA von WANNEMAKER
Stylized as: ADA or Ada von W.
Age: 23
Profession: Singer-songwriter, actress
Genre: Indie folk, indie rock, lo-fi
Label: Take Action Records

BIOGRAPHY

Born in Bonn, Germany, Ada von Wannemaker grew up as an only child, raised by her father. She was instilled with a love for art at a young age, and attended Akademie der Künste in Berlin for college with a focus in industrial design. She found a love for music one night during her second year of college when she heard the band, Mannheim, play at a local bar. She became friends with the band that night and later joined the band as a second singer with Richard K., and later starting a romantic relationship with Richard.

After Richard's tragic death, Ada left the eyes of the music world to mourn and figure out what her next step was going to be. She joined a tour of Canada with Acts of Hate, Vile Hour, The Harlots, and The Atomic War Brides, where she found the strength to continue her music career as a solo artist. She often sings a cappla, switching between German and English in her songs, sometimes without warning. Her voice is in the higher ranges, often reaching incredibly high notes while still containing a soothing, lullaby-like quality to it. Although she is a normally happy person when around people, her songs show a darker side of Ada.

Title: Meeresforscher Wahl
By: Ada von W.

The song is all a capella as Ada sings, starting in German and then switching to English for the second and third verses. The song sounds like it was made in a low-quality studio, which is exactly the sound Ada was going for. She wants her music to be raw and passionate, not produced and fake. The song as a fast, almost dark feeling to it as she sings, her voice smooth but often wavering, as if she were on the brink of tears. The song is short and sweet, almost as a teaser for what Ada will bring to the table next.

Ah, die Verlängerung Stunden in der Raffinerie
Aufstoßen Feuer in den Himmel
Wir tun unser Bestes Vampir-Routinen
Als wir saugen die sterbenden Stunden trocken
Die Nacht ist schön wie eine Rose
Wenn ich sehe, Sonnenlicht treffen Sie
Ich bin sicher, dass wir sowohl zersetzen

Ah, the fitful sleep and the fire engines
That I dream of when I dream
Some day we will both wake up for good
I will try hard not to scream
The evening wind will shake the blinds
You are stirring from your slumber
We have got something hateful on our minds

Oh sing sing sing
For the dying of the day
Sing for the flames that will rip through here
And the smoke that will carry us away
Yes, sing for the damage we have done
And the worse things that we will do
Open your mouth up and sing for me now
And I will sing for you

TITLE: Smoke Smoke Smoke That Cigarette (Cover)
BY: Ada von Wannemaker (Original by Tex Williams)
LENGTH: 2:43

Now I am a girly with a heart of gold
And the ways of a true lady, I have been told
The kind of girl that would not even harm a flea

But if me and a certain character met
The guy that invented the cigarette
I would murder that son of a bitch in the first degree

It is not because I do not smoke myself
And I do not reckon that it would harm your health
Smoked all my life, and I am not dead yet

But nicotine slaves are all the same
At a petting party or a poker game
Everything has got to stop while they have a cigarette

Smoke, smoke, smoke that cigarette
Puff, puff, puff and if you smoke yourself to death
Tell St. Peter at the Pearly Gate
That you hate to make him wait
But you have just got to have another cigarette

Now in a game of chance the other night
Old Dame Fortune was doing me right
The kings and queens just kept on coming around

And I got a full and I bet them high
But my bluff did not work on a certain guy
He just kept on raising and laying that money down

Now he would raise me, and I would raise him
I sweated blood, you have to sink or swim
He finally called, and I did not even raise the bet

So I said, “Aces full, love, how about you?”
He said, “I will tell you in a minute or two,
But right now, I have got to have me a cigarette.”

Smoke, smoke, smoke that cigarette
Puff, puff, puff and if you smoke yourself to death
Tell St. Peter at the Pearly Gate
That you hate to make him wait
But you just have to have another cigarette

The other night, I had a date
With the most handsome guy in the United States
A high-bred, uptown, fancy gentleman

He loved me, and it seemed to me
That things were about like they should be
So hand in hand we strolled down lover’s lane

He was oh so far from a cake of ice
And our smooching party was going nice
So, help me Hannah, I believe I would be there yet

But I give him a kiss, and a little squeeze
And he said, “Ah, Ada, excuse me please,
I just have to have me another cigarette.”

And he said, “Smoke, smoke, smoke that cigarette
Puff, puff, puff and if you smoke yourself to death
Tell St. Peter at the Pearly Gate
That you hate to make him wait
But you have just got to have another cigarette

30 SECOND PREVIEW OF ADA'S NEW SONG

The song starts out with in silence, with no noise for a good five seconds. Slowly, a pipe organ comes in, playing a soft, church-like melody. Ada sings over the pipe organ, her voice in a childlike happiness, slightly distorted, as if you were hearing her over an old radio.

The way that everybody's voice comes out muffled when they speak
The way we take our diminishing inventories
Month to month and
Week to week
The Maria Callas records on the stereo all the time
You are going to get your and I am going to get mine
Because in this car, in this car
Somebody is bound to get burned
I know
I know
Because I have been watching the road turn

Mark Talley: Tease! I love what I can hear here so far. You have a way with words Ms....Ada. I was going to try to say your surname there, but I'm sure I'd get it heroically wrong, so I'll go with the 3-letter option instead. Like I say though, you are the hot star of the moment, and this is really great. Can't wait to hear the whole thing. Ummm....some German....I know I learned it in school....ummm....Mein name ist Mark. Ich komme aus West Chester. Das ist in der nahe von Philadelphia. How was that? Sorry, I'm embarrassed!

ASK ADA

UserPostedImage

Ada sits in front of her computer, the backdrop being a bedroom. She's in what appears to be PJs with her bangs partly down in front of her eyes.

"Hallo, everybody!" She squeals with a wave and then blows a quick kiss to the camera. "I am Ada von Wannemaker, as I am sure you all know since you are in my Stickam room... And this is Ask Ada! Where I get your attention for the next hour or so, and you ask me questions! Hooray!" She claps and giggles, and then stares at the screen, looking at all the questions.

Q: What do you hope to accomplish in the next ten years, both musically and from a humanitarian standpoint?

A: A lot! I want to grow and grow and grow with meine husband every day. I want to explore, try new things, make different kinds of music, maybe make movies, write some books, plant as many trees as possible, help raise awareness for Borderline Personality Disorder, do more work with children, and try to conserve our natural resources as much as possible.

Q: Shit, that's a lot. Any room for kids of your own in those plans?

A: I am afraid not... Meine husband and I just recently spoke about the possibility of us having kids. It does not look like it will happen. At least not any time soon.

Q: Which singer or band would you like to sing with?

A: I get to sing with my favorite singer and my biggest fan everyday already! I do not need anybody else to sing with!... But I would not disapprove if Stephanie Fierce wanted to do a duet with me...

Q: Are you planning a world tour of any kind?

A: Oooh! Secrets, secrets! You will see, meine lieblings. You will see!

Q: Who were your favorite artists to listen to while growing up?

A: Marlene Dietrich. I am honest, I do not think I listened to anybody else for the first fourteen years of meine life! She is a goddess. Everybody: Go listen to her sing right now. She's on YouTube, I am sure of it. Or go watch one of the movies that she was in. She sings in most of them as well. Just do it. You will not regret it, I promise.

Q: What are you currently reading?

A: What an odd question... Right now, I am re-reading The Prince of Tides, which is one of my all-time favorite books, and something that I think everybody should read at least once. Or see the movie. It was Barbra Streisand in it. That should be enough to convince you to go see it.

Q: What mythical creature would you be?

A: A siren, I am sure of it. They always facinated me to no end. There is this poem called The Siren Song that I read when I was about sixteen or seventeen. The poem was the song that the sirens supposedly sing when they are drawing the men towards them. The song is about how lonely they are, and how they hate being sirens, and they wish that they could be normal and have normal contact, and then at the end it is revealed that the siren knew exactly what she was doing while singing, and she wanted the sailor to die. It was tragic, and very, um... bitchy... but I loved it. Girl power, no?

Q: What is the song 'When Death Came Calling' about, and why did you choose to sing it with Nichole Fischer?

A: Wonderful question. When Death Came Calling is very much about my well-documented battle with depression. It was more of an apology to my husband for not being able to push the depression away than it was a song about not being able to. I chose Nichole Fischer to sing it with me because we are terribly good friends (in fact, I was her maid of honor at her wedding), and her low voice, mixed with the jazz-like tune of the song worked perfectly.

Q: What is your favorite song to perform?

A: Hmmm... I think my favorite song to perform is On the Duke of Winchester. The Duke is a large boat where my husband and I, along with several other people, live. It is a weird sort of commune... But the Duke has many great memories for me, like it is where my husband first told me that he loved me, and it is where many of my friends have fallen in love and gotten married... And it is such an upbeat and happy song. I just love it so much!

Q: What about the song All of Them? What inspired that?

A: Many of my songs from my debut album were inspired by my parents. The Divorce, All of Them, Death of a First Love... I wrote all three of those about my parents, and how they went from such loving people to bitter enemies. All of Them is sung through one of my parent's point of views, asking how long they are supposed to keep up all the argueing and fighting until they just give up. I was only six when they got a divorce, but it effected me greatly... The last part of the song, I wrote to focus on myself and Erich Hess, showing what an effort I want to put into our marriage so we do not end up like my mother and father.

Q: Are there songs that are emotionally hard for you to sing?

A: Oh, Gott, yes! When we were recording, I would burst out into tears every time Erich would start singing during her verse in My Love. Even now, when I am playing it alone, I start to get misty eyed during his part. We wrote that song together, and words could never describe the love we have for each other... But Gott, do they come close...

"Alright," Ada says with a sigh and a small yawn. "I am tired! I am going to bed. Goodnight, meine lieblings. I hope you all enjoyed this. And if I did not get to your question, I apologize profusely. I love you all very much. Be sure to watch SNL this weekend, and Starfactory next week! Mwah!"

She signs off.

Dear fans, family, friends, and anybody who has stumbled upon my website (by the way, if you have: Welcome! I love you!),

It is Day Three on tour, I have been thinking about a lot (mostly while I'm standing backstage, drunk as all hell, waiting to go on).

Mostly I have been thinking about the future. I am 22. I am no spring chicken, as you would say... So I have composed a letter to my future child, and I would like to share to all with you:

Dear Future Child,

Growing up, I never thought about having you. In fact, I never thought about any of the things little girls aften dream about: weddings, husbands, or making babies. And here I am, at the newly tender age of twenty-two, married (weird), to a husband who is also hopefully your father (weirder), and thinking about having children (super fucking weird). I do not know if this is what they mean when they say your biological clock starts "ticking," but is started happening sometime late last year, and my usual reaction to seeing babies went from "ugh" to "awww" to "I WANT ONE RAWR!" Also, my friend, Nichole, is having a baby, and I saw that even though it looks incredibly hard, it looked doable, and the rewards outweighed the hardships.

My various reasons for wanting you are perverse. One being that I want to see what a kid that my husband, who is utterly handsome looking, and I, who am weird looking, will look like. We are a petri dish of bizarre genes, and right now we can safely assume that you will have flat feet, dimples, and a distinct nose, as those are the only physical traits that Erich and I share. I also think that your father and I like each other a whole lot, and we have lots of love to give to any little potato that we pop out, and you will be a goofy little fucker who will sing weird songs, and have a sick sense of human, even though you will probably end up hating us, because we are both so annoying to probably everyone, but each other.

I want you to be a boy because girls scare the shit out of me. They say that you get tenfold of what you were like when you were a kid, and that means I will spawn the devil in female form. With a boy, you basically just have to teach him to not get girls pregnant and stay out of jail. With girls, it's constantly worrying about her being raped, or taken advantage of non-stop until you die. Plus, a teenage girl is probably the worst thing in the entire world. They are, to use the polite term, "fucking cunts" to their mothers. I would rather have a kid with an Oedipal complex than an Elektra complex (although I would prefer you have neither).

(Please note: I have met a bunch of lovely teenage girls in my life as well, and I certainly hope, if you are indeed a girl, that you are one of them.)

Why do I keeping thinking about having children, and not shut the fuck up and poop one out already?

Timing. Professionally, I am not in a place in my "career" where I can take the time off to have you. I am not making enough money to justify paying someone else to raise you, and I am also not ready to give up what I am doing to raise an infant. When I was super frustrated a few months ago with my professional life, I said to your father, "Fuck it, let us get to baby making," and I was ready to quit music and be a stay-at-home mom, so we went on a last hurrah, a lexurious vaction to Canada, which may not sound that great, but totally was. Somewhere on that trip, I realized there was no way I could be a parent right then. I would end up resenting the child and for the rest of my life, regret that I didn't follow through with my passions. So we put it on hold.

The same way I do not get jealous of supermodels' looks and body types, but rather their ability to buy prime real estate at the age of seventeen, I find myself getting jealous of other female musicians' success, not because of the money and fame that they aquire (although the comfort of money is nice), but rather that they are granted the luxury of taking the time to have children and move their lives forward in a natural progression, while I am caught in a perpetual stasis. Female singers my age and younger are all popping them out, and at some point, I am going to be at a crossroads. This is a classic "have your cake and eat it, too" scenario, and although that rarely works out, cake is delicious.

I also made the horrible mistake of entering into an industry that is looks based, and I just got in waht is probably the best shape of my life. The idea of that all going away makes me sad, and I think it is horrible that I even have to think that way. But I am pretty sure I am going to be one of those ladies that is going to go on a nine-month eating parade (which I am very much looking forward to), and gain a ton of weight, and to get back into fighting shape... well... that is going to take awhile.

Also, when people in the music business find out that I am married, they always ask, "Are you planning on having children?" and I know that question is a test. No one wants to invest in a person that is going to bow out at any moment and possibly forever. I get that. In this industry, babies have been nicknamed "band killers." Funnily enough, my mother used to tell me that she did not get into medical school in the 70's because they asked her if she wanted to have children, and she said, "yes," and they basically told her, "Thanks, see you later." That might be true. It might also have been because she was fucking crazy, but that has always stuck with me.

And lastily, I am petrified to raise a child in this era. Whenever I see teens on the television, they are so monotone and lifeless and uninspired that it scares me. Every one of them sounds like they are reading badly written lines from that MTV show NEXT. And even when they are excited, it sounds like a valley girl on quaaludes, with no inflection or personality. The idea of spawning something like that makes me physically ill. They all have their heads in their iPhone and iPads, and their sense of entitlement is insane. I will gladly admit that when I grew up, I was spoiled as shit, but to think it has gotten even worse blows me away. I have to pretend to think that we will raise you differently, and you will not turn out like that, but I think that is pompous to assume. Who knows? After all, we do live in New York City, the home of the valley girl and undeserved socialites.

So I do not know why, after all that, I still want kids, or when I will have you. And even if you do wind up being a total fucking asshole, we will be happy that you are healthy and do not hurt or kill anyone. And if that is the best that I can hope for, that I do not create a human being that kills other home beings, why even bother? So when you end up Googling (or whatever they call it at that point) your parents (probably when you are at the age of two), and wind up reading this on whatever future computer bleep-bloop device via your mind implant, remeber that we love you, and please do not kill anyone.

Love, your future mother,

Ada

PS: I feel inclined to add a disclaimer that I am in fact not pregnant, nore am I trying to get pregnant, as anyimte I mention the word baby, everyone automatically assumes I am with child. Sorry, Grandfather...

Ooc: loved it.

Erich: what?! You're pregnant? *rolls with laughter* could you imagine our offspring? They would be the sweetest and most insane little creature alive....and be cuter than Sam and Nichole's brood. Sam and Nichole are both lookers for sure, but we have a certain....zing. Um are you saying I should pop some rad-away and become functional?
