"Brave" is the lead single to Vanity's upcoming tenth studio album that is scheduled for release early this year. After selling close to three million copies with her last album, Good Mourning, an album that lyrically dealt with her struggles with ex-manager Steven Bryans, Vanity is looking to the future, and seems happier than ever. "This album is gonna be a big shock to a lot of my fans, I feel like I went in a dark direction for a while and at this stage in my life, I feel like inspiring people to live life and enjoy it. I want to make an album that makes you appreciate life," she says on the upcoming record. "It'll be inspired by house and dance music, not the average Dr. Luke dance-pop beats, but the real dance music you'd hear in an underground club, that's what gets me going."
And it certainly seems like Vanity's music is no longer dark and emotional, but instead uplifting and cheerful. The lyrics to "Brave" are simple and it puts out a message that many songs have done before, but as a gay icon herself, Vanity explains that she felt it was "her time to help out those being bullied". "I was bullied myself back in high school, and sometimes you don't feel the courage to talk to your parents, instead, you seek comfort in your favourite musicians. So for all those who look up to me and need an escape from reality, 'Brave' is the song to make you feel like you're worth a million times more than the bullies. Just be fearless, be yourself, and be brave."
Vanity's vocals in the song soar over an electronic pop beat, a slight trance-inspired sound heard to it, it's the perfect track to imagine in a club with its multiple dance breakdowns, but also manages to stay radio friendly at the same time. "When the bitches bite, we bite back harder" she sings in the chorus with her powerful, confident vocals over the pounding bass and synths. It's a track that's heavily dominated by synthesizers, but the production goes hand in hand with Vanity's voice, notably singing in a higher register than usual, but it doesn't sound at all forced or uneasy for her. After the electronic-influenced Good Mourning, it looks like Vanity wants to stay closer to that sound for her new music, but this time, she's doing it with a smile on her face.
