i'm sorry britney isn't a RECORDING artist. she is the pothole in the road. the engineer, producer, and marketing team who cover up the obstacle are the real talents.

britney might have gotten a writing credit as part of her contract, or as a marketing ploy from the label, but that doesn't mean she actually wrote the songs.

do you people have any clue how show business works?

Hairdresser actually. And cheers!

Though in seriousness, it's in the definition...

Performing Artist. She records. She is therefore, a recording artist. Can't argue with the definition.

EDIT: oh yeah, and I feel I should add, the addition of the my educational path was merely to emphasise that I have a fair clue about the industry side of things, alongside marketing, finance, and studio practice, which you likely wouldn't have a clue on as being the dinosaur you seem to be emphasising yourself as, you WOULDN'T have any idea of the industry past the days the world was in black in white.

my sister has been working regularly in hollywood for more than a decade as does her husband. she works in television and film, and he owns a small record label.

In which case, all the power to your sister then, but I doubt she dictates the in's and out's of the industry to you non-stop, especially in an era you seem to have so much disinterest and distate for.

My point still stands, have a fit about it as much as you please, but Britney Spears IS an artist, and has just as much right to be one as anyone else. Art is not discriminatory. People are discriminatory.

IMO pop artist is an oxymoron. like jumbo shrimp.

That's a ludicrous statement though. People listen to shit music, always have, always will. It's just that most people move on with their lives because music isn't that important to them, and so a lot of things fade into obscurity. The reason most people like songs is because of some novelty, some memorable hook or rhythm, and then they hear it over and over enough times for it to be stuck in their heads. They're not interested in the supposed artistic integrity of anything. The people who really love music, they will find good music in any and every era. Everyone else just ends up blowing away with the next wind.

i agree all "styles" (the correct term is genres), of music should be welcome, but what passes for pop music today is not music. its overproduced formulated garbage. therefore i don't believe britney spears is a recording artist.

why exactly is it close minded to dislike bad music? no critic in the world, who doesn't have a vested interest in her career or their own, would ever acknowledge britney spears as a viable artist.

oh BTW... i was one of the popular kids in my day, and back then we actually listened to great music.

compared to the children of the '50s, '60s, '70s, '80s, & 90s; kids today listen to the worst music without question.

the main stream music industry is artistically dead. have you ever noticed how all the album covers from the major labels are real flashy with photographs of beautiful people on them? why do you think that is?

if you want to debate this i'm all for it, but if you feel threatened go ahead and throw insults instead.

i have a very good response to this....

shit music does not recognise the boundries of time...

thats a valid point, but in previous decades quality artists were frequently represented on the billboard top 40. i haven't looked at the charts in a while, but i doubt there is one respectable artist among them.

of course there has always been bad music, but mainstream music is at its lowest point in decades. i understand this may be seen as a mere opinion, but its an educated one. try comparing country music from the '70s to the garbage nashville is passing off today. this doesn't mean the industry didn't produce any crap in the '70s, nor does it mean steve earle isn't a viable artist today.

i also want to add that i believe there is a direct correlation with children having more money to spend than ever before, and the quality of mainstream music today.

there are just so many more bad films, television shows, and music for kids than ever before.

Weight of numbers I guess. The music industry reached a saturation point (and now appears to be shrinking) where every possible market has been exploited. But that aside, all the great motown hits and stuff, they were written by external songwriters, played by session musicians. That's how pop music works. They maximise the available talent by marrying good songwriters to good singers. A select few they trust to do both themselves. Rock bands they tend to take a slightly hands off approach to production and focus more on marketing.

What's more worrying to me is kids who claim to despise all this mass-marketed music like Britney Spears, but their favourite band is Green Day. Green Day are a good example, because they are marketed in such a way as to be slightly more edgy and "genuine" than most pop, and thus appeal to a large swathe of rebellious suburbanite kids who like a little bit of teen angst but still want their music accessible and easy. But that's as much the fault of the teenage music-as-fashion-choice culture that's been around since the early days of rock n' roll.

But the fact is, as much as there is more bad music than ever, there's also more good music if you're willing to look for it - and nothing's going to make teenagers look for good music less than telling them to look for it - they have to get there on their own.

This one is for SpringChicken

Britney Spears IS an artist. Point blank period. Specifically a performing artist.

Artist (definition from wikipedia)- is wide-ranging and covers a broad spectrum of activities to do with creating art, practicing the arts and/or demonstrating an art.
Art (definition from wikipedia)- Art is the process or product of deliberately arranging elements in a way that appeals to the senses or emotions. It encompasses a diverse range of human activities, creations, and modes of expression, including music, literature, film, sculpture, and paintings. The meaning of art is explored in a branch of philosophy known as aesthetics.
Musician (definition from wikipedia)- musician is a person who performs or writes music.

Now moving on to the mainstream talk. Just because a song is played a lot doesn't mean it is " shit". Some types of music does not appeal to everyone and just because it doesn't appeal to you doesn't mean it isn't art or that it is "shit". Especially if you are raised in an urban area, your views on music could be completely different. Not all music is meant to have a special meaning anyway. A song does not need sarcasm or double meaning lyrics to be considered artistic. Also, if everyone listened or liked the same thing I think this would be a boring world. And it is true many music that is made don't have any thought in it or the song is digitally processed. Music is evolving, if you wanna get stuck in the past good for you but don't come bashing on the younger generation just because the music doesn't appeal to you.
Get an I-pod. <--Good tip.

Britney Spears has had a huge impact in my life musically and that's why I respect her and I call her an artist. And I am a fan and I do buy her music and I like to talk about it thats why I made a thread. If music genres were to be segregated in this forum, no one would be on this forum. So what is the problem? Why is her music doing to you that is getting you all worked up?

Anyone else noticing the recent (not that recent really) pop trend for songs to not have melodies so much as tiny micro-melodies spread in between long sections of monotone, in amongst bleeping beeping synth noises and ultra-dry clicky hip hop drum samples?

Anyone else as in anyone else other than me because I have too. Don't worry, it will eventually get annoying to people and music will change. It always does.

i guess we define art differently, because i don't see anything creative about what she does. its purely derivative crap thats been done to death. i seriously doubt britney spears has any creative control. she is simply a marionette, manipulated by those behind the scenes whose interest is dollars and not art; but i'll concede this one to you, and refer to her from now on as a BAD artist.
