I listened to Old Man Gloom, but I've just listened to the stuff of youtube, and I've listened to about five seconds of Prurient before my eardrums exploded in agony. Unless your listening to a different Prurient, that's the most horrible sound I've ever heard in my life. And I've heard of Mr. Bungle, "The Girls of Porn" and "Egg" from the self titled albums are okay, but not really my kind of thing though. Old Man Gloom are awesome though. |

I checked Old Man Gloom they seem alright, probably I'll order Seminar II and III sometime in the near future, and that video for Retrovertigo is fantastic |

It's not about him, or even what he does or how he does it, it's about the expression itself, all fetishism aside, just the noise-saturated squeal of electronic sound reproduction. I don't know whether you've ever gotten a microphone or an instrument, run it through some distortion, into an amp and just messed around with the feedback. It's unbelievably cathartic. |

That Old Man Gloom stuff you recommended was awesome. A level of musicality that is so often missing from the mainstream or more well known metal. Instead of guitar riffs and wanking there are complex and well thought out musical thoughts and ideas. Even when the song got heavy it didn't lose the musicality of it all, although I must say I was a huge sucker for the acoustic stuff at the beginning. |

Well the best Old Man Gloom is the album Seminar III: Zozobra, containing only one track, the 27 minute Zozobra, which goes from crackling radio static, through various periods of tension and release, long gentle build ups to enormous crushing release, with some bizarrely terrifying samples of dialogue from a terrible Disney Scifi movie called Black Hole... Hence why it's my most played song on Last.fm, despite its length. The other band I had success recommending on the old forum was Thee Silver Mt. Zion, who very quickly metamorphised from being Godspeed-lite:

If you listen to alternative rock then the band Oceans Upon Us are a band you should listen to.
They are just a local band that play in small venues in the essex area who in my opinion should have been signed by at the least a minor record label instead of other bands who just aren't as good. But thats just my opinion on them.

What he does is finds a band. We'll say for example: Godspeed You! Black Emperor. And then he'll look for projects by members of that band. Which gets him to A Silver Mount Zion and Fly Pan Am. Then he'll look to bands on the same record label and find stuff such as Do Make Say Think, and then he'll go off from one of those again, endlessly finding interesting tunes.
Which, it has to be said, is alot easier to do nowadays than it was 20 years ago. |
