So, did you check out Prurient or Old Man Gloom?

EDIT: Also, in my world, it goes without saying that everyone knows Mr. Bungle, but you cats probably don't, so eat this impressive original video to Trevor Dunn's post-modern lament (yeah, that's right folks Mike Patton wasn't the only guy in that kick ass band).

That video is fantastic.

Yeah. Iron Maiden. WHO?

Honestly, I'm not even in tune with the indie or emo/punk type scenes and I know everything you listed. What was even the point?

well like gildy said, nobody really cares about others interests here.

What the fuck relevance is that to you posting massive bands?

I'm sorry, I never knew Hathorne Heights were such rock gods.

I agree with Paul's recommendation of Old Man Gloom incidentally. I need more OMG, they are a fascinating band and quite unique.

What would I recommend? Mmmm. This is hard. I could say Burzum, but the only people likely to actually listen are the other metal fans who should already know and love them.

Fuck it. Staying black metal here.

In the past 6 months I've listened to The Beatles the most, and then Faith No More. But you should know these bands already. So I'm recommending my #3 band, the Swedish group Lifelover. They are from Stockholm and are responsible for some quite haunting music (not nearly as terrifying as Silencer however), mixing traditional black metal sounds with more "rock" elements, ending up with a rather unique blend, that many would argue is not black metal at all. But to me black metal is as much an aesthetic as it is anything else. Anyway, this is pure agony. The name is ironic in case you had a humour by-pass, in the same vein as another depressive band, Happy Days. Really, the music is quite simple, but it is stirring. It causes me to feel. This is what I ask from music.

I have two words for you:

MASTER'S and HAMMER. Probably my favorite black metal band next to BLASPHEMY.

I listened to Old Man Gloom, but I've just listened to the stuff of youtube, and I've listened to about five seconds of Prurient before my eardrums exploded in agony. Unless your listening to a different Prurient, that's the most horrible sound I've ever heard in my life.

And I've heard of Mr. Bungle, "The Girls of Porn" and "Egg" from the self titled albums are okay, but not really my kind of thing though. Old Man Gloom are awesome though.

Yeah, Prurient was a joke to see if anyone was paying attention. That being said, I totally dig that kind of thing.

How can you possibly 'dig' that kind of thing. I could make something like that, it's hardly talent. It's not like he's Luciano Pavorotti and it's not like he's Mark Van Hoen either, so what exactly does he do that's of any worth aside from throwing together a few weird sounds and noises?

LONG WORDY ANSWER:
I dig it because it is visceral and pure. Is it music? Perhaps not. But your assertion that it's of no worth is entirely subjective. Prurient is far from my favourite noise artist in the world, and I will probably never buy an album, but even so I admire the directness of the interface between him and the sound, and frankly, I just have a thing for electronic feedback, for wide-spectrum noise, for the unpredictability of that expression. Feedback plays itself, all a human can do is manipulate it, bend it, push it in one direction or another, but ultimately, it's pure electronic energy, pure signal, and so I dig it on an academic level and on a visceral level.

Is a Jackson Pollock painting just splats and dribbles of paint over a canvas? Yes. So? It's still a painting, you still have a response, a reaction. Prurient is hardly a genius, or even all that interesting, but the terms by which you listen to music don't apply to what he does because it's not for pleasure. You say you could do it, well go ahead. I'd probably dig that too. It's not about him, or even what he does or how he does it, it's about the expression itself, all fetishism aside, just the noise-saturated squeal of electronic sound reproduction.

SHORT ANSWER:
Because I'm weird.

Fair do's, I mean I can understand people liking Britney Spears and at the other end of the spectrum I can understand people liking Burzum but Prurient had me rather puzzled :P But if it's what you like tis what you like.

I don't know whether you've ever gotten a microphone or an instrument, run it through some distortion, into an amp and just messed around with the feedback. It's unbelievably cathartic.

That Old Man Gloom stuff you recommended was awesome. A level of musicality that is so often missing from the mainstream or more well known metal. Instead of guitar riffs and wanking there are complex and well thought out musical thoughts and ideas. Even when the song got heavy it didn't lose the musicality of it all, although I must say I was a huge sucker for the acoustic stuff at the beginning.

Well the best Old Man Gloom is the album Seminar III: Zozobra, containing only one track, the 27 minute Zozobra, which goes from crackling radio static, through various periods of tension and release, long gentle build ups to enormous crushing release, with some bizarrely terrifying samples of dialogue from a terrible Disney Scifi movie called Black Hole... Hence why it's my most played song on Last.fm, despite its length.

The other band I had success recommending on the old forum was Thee Silver Mt. Zion, who very quickly metamorphised from being Godspeed-lite:

To being a vocal group who can't sing singing oh-so-beautifully about that final drop of hope at the bottom of a leaky bucket, that little tiny fragment of joy in a pile of broken shit:

If you listen to alternative rock then the band Oceans Upon Us are a band you should listen to.

They are just a local band that play in small venues in the essex area who in my opinion should have been signed by at the least a minor record label instead of other bands who just aren't as good. But thats just my opinion on them.

What he does is finds a band. We'll say for example: Godspeed You! Black Emperor. And then he'll look for projects by members of that band. Which gets him to A Silver Mount Zion and Fly Pan Am. Then he'll look to bands on the same record label and find stuff such as Do Make Say Think, and then he'll go off from one of those again, endlessly finding interesting tunes.

Which, it has to be said, is alot easier to do nowadays than it was 20 years ago.
