I think, almost going on what you're saying, for me, labels like straight edge is really what helps me keep it up. In the past, for numerous reasons, I've simply said, I won't drink again, but without that sort of feeling of commitment, without being officially dedicated to anti-alcoholism/anti-drug abuse, I often find it hard to stay straight on the path. The tattoo is basically my acknowledgment, or bonding if you will, of the commitment towards a straight edge life style that I want to take. I'm not looking for all the rules and guidelines and such, but I believe if I don't represent with this life style and have that sort of spiritual connection to it, I may slip back into alcohol, etc. Edited by user 12 July 2010 07:02:47(UTC)

My own personal problems with straight edge is just that the way that it essentially replaces religion for a certain strata of people, and I've made my feelings towards organised religion pretty apparent on this board several times so won't go into it here :P I just find that edgers are kinda...really bloody irritating. I have no problem with people who want to get their own shit together, and doing whatever that takes, it's just that so many of them have that self-righteous holier-than-thou shit going on because hey, they don't drink, or smoke, or fuck around, and only listen to really fucking dull hardcore (that's totally the worst thing about straight edge. As much as I love Minor Threat and Gorilla Biscuists, edge bands these days are all fucking Throwdown esque Hatebreed wannabes. And that shit is boring :P) and well, fuck that. Totally don't need to be moralised to, about abortion, or eating meat or about the fact that some times I drink alcohol, and sometimes I drink it to excess intentionally. It's the preachiness that is unbareable. There are no black and whites. Of course, that perhaps needs to be told to a certain minority of edgers who happily go around kicking the shit out of people who mind their own business and are just chilling out with a beer at a show or whatever.
Just think that dedicated yourself to a cult is kind of a rash reaction to a tragic occurence. I mean if that is really what you need to help you say not then fair enough, but if you are going to be able to say no then that power is already inside you now, you just need to find a way of accessing it.
Anyway, I don't mean to be trying to teach you how to live your life or anything man, which is maybe how it seems. I really have no problem with people who don't drink or do drugs, it's the people who think that not doing those things makes them superior to me that I have issues with. |

Oh god no, I totally know what you're talking about. I might hold off on the tattoo, just given what you said about the ability to say no. I don't know, I can't stand the supremacists either, I may just try to stay really committed, I don't know, I think for me oddly enough, as ridiculous as it sounds, the only way I'll be able to stay on track is to be committed through the spirituality that is a tattoo. that's how it works for me I guess, tattoos have actually helped my through a lot of stuff in the past, although what you said has definitely made me think. The only other thing that might keep me on track is the memory of my friend Paul, so that may very well be what I try to connect to. Thanks?

Oh I see! Why don't you try getting it on your chest, somewhere where you can hide it if you wear a shirt. Because the arm.....

I don't know what the fuck's happening to me. Since Sunday I don't feel hungry at all, and all types of food disgust me deeply. Before that, I was eating like a pig. Not that I'm complaining, I love the semi-anorexic lifestyle, I just wish I knew why I'm like this :S (and no, I'm not pregnant). |

I sometimes go three or four days without eating, dunno why, but it leaves me feeling refreshed at the back end of it. (I am also not pregnant ;)) |

I got some ass, I'm not sure that would interest you but might as well put that out there. I also have regained faith in Children of Bodom after seeing their drummer doesn't suck. Then I realized that seeing as they've been dead since 2003 that an awesome drummer won't do much. |

I'm thinking about resurrecting my grunge band here that was based off of the cranberries. The account has 16,000 points so why not haha. |
