And yet Keith Richards & Lou Reed still soldier on. Odd that.
And Pete Doherty.
Crazy, this though. You just never expect someone so famous to die, even though inevitably it will happen at some stage.
Eh, you get used to it as you get older. I still remember when Ayrton Senna died, I must have been nearly 10 when it happened, and we had been visiting my grandad in Fife so missed the San Marino Grand Prix qualifying on the Saturday, and then we were on the bus from Dunfermline to Inverness on Sunday and so missed the race live. Just remember coming in, early evening, mum putting on the radio and they had just announced that they had turned off the life support at the hospital. It was pretty mindblowing really, best racing driver in the world at the time, only 34, dead. Last time that had happened in F1 was in 1982, before I was even alive. Didn't know that people could die in motorsport.
Think that was the last time I was genuinely shocked at someone famous dying. Well, there was Miezko Talarczyk, the vocalist in a Swedish grindcore band called Nasum, he died in the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami, on holiday in Thailand with his girlfriend, that was quite shocking to hear someone I knew and liked had been caught up in that tragedy. Though it was more the waiting, it took 2 months before his body was found & identified.
Ultimately, they are human beings, just as susceptible to the same risks as you and I. But if its someone whose work you appreciate, and they die relatively young, it's always sad. But I think you do get used to it happening as you get older. Then the next freak-out is when people you went to school with start dying.
