Artist: Vanity Title: "Ashamed" EP: Tease Genre: Electronic Label: North Hill Records Writer: Vanity
"Ashamed" is the second track on Vanity's EP Tease, which gives a small taster into what you can expect from her forthcoming 2014 album, which is yet to be titled. "I don't believe in holding back on music that I think the fans should hear," Vanity states, "I've made all these songs in the in the last month or so, so they're not only fresh to your ears, they're fresh to mine." The songs, which she describes as her own brand of "erotic electronic" music, feature unapologetically raunchy lyrics combined with hard-hitting beats that shows Vanity continuing to push the boundaries of pop music. "Ashamed" is far from your ordinary pop hit and takes a more experimental approach, the song fading in slowly with eerie synths that gradually increase in pace as Vanity's vocals hit the first time in the opening verse. Her voice is seductive and soft, remaining that way throughout the course of the track as the focus is put on the instrumental, slight pauses after each chorus to draw the attention back to the layers of synths in the track, before the majority of them fade out for the simplistic verses. A drum beat later adds into the mix by the second chorus, as the song continues to build throughout its length. She sings the opening line to the middle-eight in an almost whisper, as everything in the background stops completely and nothing but her voice is heard, "Cause the clothes we fill our wardrobes with are nothing," before going onto sing it normally, her voice still having that sultry sound to it. The whirling synths in the song come back in suddenly for the final chorus with a more dominant drum beat in the background underneath the vocals, once it ends, a short outro plays, nothing but the sound of heavy breathing and quieter, more atmospheric synths heard, as the song slowly draws to an end.
ARTIST COMMENTARY "I think in pop music, female artists especially have this pressure within the industry to take their clothes off and play up to the sex kitten role. A lot of female singers don't want to have to do this, but they do it because they want to continue their lifestyle and continue to have the opportunity to pursue their dreams. In my case, I've had no man in a business suit sit me down and tell me to behave this way, or write songs like this, I'm just very openly making music that's both dirtier and more controversial than what a manufactured sex kitten's song would be like. When I want to make a certain type of music or song, I really go for it, I refuse to hold back and I think this EP is all about that creative freedom and expressing my sexuality as not only a woman, but a female pop star. "Ashamed" is all about our society, how men can get away with a lot more than women, and how women are expected to behave in a certain way, which a lot of it is in fact the media's fault. It's manipulating the minds of the world when we see topless girls so casually on the inside of a newspaper, we don't get men paraded around in a daily newspaper for the pleasure of women. I'm not ashamed for feeling that way. As a female singer, we're expected to be sexy, yet the media jump on it and call us cheap when we behave in that way. It's my way of saying, hey, everyone's got a mind of their own to decide right from wrong, and I'm not ashamed of being me and behaving the way I do."
Sounds like:
"Ashamed"Let me close my eyes and find something to believe in When I'm sex dreaming and heavy breathing In these dark nights, under these hot lights I'll surrender myself to love, I won't put up a fight I'd rather let my body drift to the sky and back Feel my blood pumping, closer to a heart attack Cause I just wanna lose myself to a climax
In the midnight hour, I can feel myself Drifting away to a dirtier realm My hand draws closer to the gates Of my sacred place Open up the doors to this hidden kingdom I've got the key, and I'll let myself in
Well if you're looking for a victim to blame You can pin it on me, cause I'm not ashamed And baby, there's no pressure in my pleasure I don't sit quietly, I'll put my hands all over me Self-loving don't come with a heartfelt apology Cause we've all got a demon that can't be tamed And you can pin it on me, cause I'm not ashamed
I'll fall victim to pleasure, fall deeper into this bed of romance I don't need music to make my heartbeat dance And when I feel myself growing closer and closer I'll enter reality and go slower and slower I'll arch my back and hold onto these damp sheets In the heat of a moment that's never felt so right
In the midnight hour, I can feel myself Drifting away to a dirtier realm My hand draws closer to the gates Of my sacred place Open up the doors to this hidden kingdom I've got the key, and I'll let myself in
Well if you're looking for a victim to blame You can pin it on me, cause I'm not ashamed And baby, there's no pressure in my pleasure I don't sit quietly, I'll put my hands all over me Self-loving don't come with a heartfelt apology Cause we've all got a demon that can't be tamed And you can pin it on me, cause I'm not ashamed
And if I sin in all the right ways Will it make it all okay? If I said the best position that I could get in Was down on my knees Would I make you change what you believe? Would you tell me to stop? Would you say please?
Cause the clothes we fill our wardrobes with are nothing But a barrier to express beauty in its most raw, simplistic form I like that fresh out the womb look, and you do too That's why you pant whenever I step a little closer A woman's mind that's unrestricted, oh, if only you knew What I get up to when I close my eyes, cause when I do You breathe a little heavier, we kiss a little harder And we do everything that we're not supposed to
Well if you're looking for a victim to blame You can pin it on me, cause I'm not ashamed And baby, there's no pressure in my pleasure I don't sit quietly, I'll put my hands all over me Self-loving don't come with a heartfelt apology Cause we've all got a demon that can't be tamed And you can pin it on me, cause I'm not ashamed |
